FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

Cache record gives a few seconds of record time before hitting the trigger. It does not act as the record buffer for high frame rate work like the record buffer on the FS700.

Are you saying it's not possible to use cache recording for 120 or 180fps shooting? Or are you just saying it's not like the fs700 buffered recording which buffers the entire clip first? being able to be in 180fps mode and press record and get the last few seconds recorded plus continue rolling could be very useful. It's like the safety of end trigger with the control and convenience of start trigger plus no recording limit.

From CVP in the UK who I pre-ordered with:

At the moment we do not have a confirmed dispatch date - Sony have advised an estimated time of early - mid November. They will provide us with a more accurate date once the cameras start shipping from their warehouse.

Love that UK English-- "dispatch date" sounds so much classier than American "shipping date." Likewise, the other day on the subway in NYC the recorded announcement said: "Watch out for the gap between the subway car and the platform." 'Mind the gap" is so much tighter syntax.

The latest I have heard in the US is we should start expecting units to arrive this week (last week in Oct) or next week.

Sony UK site, by the way, has the FS-7 brochure available for download. As of last night at least, no on US site.

Thanks to all you folks - Slowly but surely almost all of my questions have been answered about this camera so I can hit the ground running when it show up. Here's a couple more though:

1- Something I've asked before - What is the difference and what do people prefer for shooting baked in-LUTS re: 709 800% vs 709 Type A

2. Difference between S-Gamut3.Cine & S-Gamut3

3. Anyone know if its possible to turn the EVF screen (with or without the eyepiece ) at a right angle out to the left so the operator could see it in cramped quarters like a car? That can be a big deal sometimes and something most cameras with flip out screens can do .

Thanks

Let me suggest you take a look at Alistair Chapman's site xdcam-user.com

He discusses these questions in some depth. As far as turning the EVF, I seem to recall yes but perhaps that is best answered by someone who actually physically has a camera in front of them to verify.

As I understand it, you cannot use the cache with high frame rate recording.

Can you change the white balance Kelvin number manually without going into any kind of menu or profile settings?

I just used a Sony PMW-300 today and you had to go into a picture profile setting to change the white balance Kelvin manually which is not as quick as on the C100 which you can either select the Kelvin with the joystick or by pressing the White Balance button and then moving the joystick up or down.

If I understand it correct with Slog and Slog 2 you have to raise middle tones to get skin tones at the right level but with Slog3 middle tones and skin tones are left unchanged when grading or applying a LUT?

Don't know if anyone else is interested in this, but I just checked putting Nikon lenses via a Nikon G> EF adapter going into a metabones EF> E mount adapter on an FS700. Seemed perfectly solid and the lenses seemed maintain at least close to Parfocal quality ( I didn't check really carefully with a chart). I've got all Nion right now and plan to migrate over to EF for the FS7 but for now at least I can take my time making the transition.

Talked to my dealer today about my pre-order (Vistek Toronto) and they say that the camera is expected for Nov 1st. I am the top of the pre-order list but we will see. I'm skeptical but hopefully. I have some upcoming shoots end of November I would love to use this camera for.

FWIW, Metabones notes on the E->EF Mark IV page that they do not support stacking an additional adapter on top of the Metabones.

I'm guessing that means that if something breaks they're not responsible and won't warranty. I think I could take that chance. Might be an issue of you can't get the damn thing off though and sometimes its tricky to get them on correctly.

By the way I just read Alistair Chapman's guide to exposing Cine EI with the F55/5 and it was very helpful for understanding the different LUT's. Thanks for the tip.

I am wondering now, since a lot of people recommend using baked-in LUT's rather than standard gamma's for WYSIWYG shooting and color adjustments are off in CINE EI - , are there any tricks to dealing with color issues like green fluorescent or mixed lighting, or when you might want an intentionally warm or cool look? You could buy filters of course like ion the old film days (still have some Corals) , maybe create a few custom LOOKs?

Thanks for that article Osslund. Are you sure that the download for G cards might not be faster on a Mac?

Also did the XDQ-SB1A (that's the G reader right) had a male USB plug built on it. On a mAC at least that can be a big PITA as there is no room to use the second USB port. I guess you could find a M>F USB wire to take up less room right?
Actually the S card download speed of around 11 1/2 min for a 128 card sounds pretty damn fast to me already.

Sony has shipped a limited quantity of FS7 units to US resellers. Less than 100 from what I'm told. There should be some in the wild by Friday I expect.

Now on to the rest of the world.

Can't wait to hear some more hands on feedback on the camera. I've been watching Dan Chung's twitter feed as he has one and is using it many situations. He speaks very highly of it and he has access to everything under the sun it seems.

Thanks, that's good to know. For now, I bought the new Metabones Ultra Nikon G > E Mount to get me started. I don't plan on switching over to Canon anytime soon (though I might buy the Metabones Ultra Canon mount for future rental flexibility).

Can't wait for my FS7 to arrive. :-)
