FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

Its not really there with LightRoom or Resolve but AFAIK it is the first official method of de-loging Sony footy.

That is really big because you can pass log to a client and then give them a 'one step' method of delogging and turning to ProRes.

Exactly what I was saying about the new slog workflow. Nice!
Beside catalyst browser there is also catalyst prepare, which is more like the redcine-x
but it's not for free... :(

Well if it is a 'grown up' program its worth it.

Would need tracked secondaries and the ability to export LUTs to the camera.

Im very interested in this as I feel Slog has been too random till now.

I've played with Catalyst Browse with some FS-7 footage which alas I can't post. This was SLog3 material and it was very easy to de-log, change color temp (nighttime NYC skyline shots where the operator--not me-- had left camera at 5500K) and then export a ProRes. Sony is working on batch export. Catalyst Prepare will not be expensive and I think is a definite answer. On the other hand, I brought that footage into Resolve, applied the Sony SLog3 LUT and then added a Film Convert look via OFX. But once there is a batch export in Catalyst Browse, this might be the best workflow for log footage.

What I like is there is some concept of proper nailed workflow.

I assume there are LUTs to give the 709 look to the camera

At this point exposure should become simple (grey at 50 with LUT applied) but unlike actually shooting 709 we get that all important post wiggle room for those few moments we dont hit perfection in camera :)

As a bit of software
Click Grey
Batch export
would of course be the basic minimums
next coming secondaries (sky burn) and the tracked secondaries etc.

Do you think the C300II will have big upgrades or more of an Apple like 'spec bump' like the C100II?
If they will announce it and release it very soon, probably not. With that move they could possibly stop people from changing systems (to Sony and their FS7). But if they plan to announce it at NAB they have to bring some substantial features. The whole industry will be 4K and beyond at that point.

There are already several LUTs build in - some 709 800% and others too.
I don't remember exactly which were there, but you can apply the LUTs to
each output and the viewfinder separately.

As far as I understood the concept in the short time I spent with the camera
this is exactly the control that you wanna have.
You can still choose to bake in looks or use SLog3 and have LUTs applied or
not applied to control monitors and viewfinders.

It's also possible to import the Sony LUTs into Resolve and change them according to
your personal taste and then reimport them into the camera.
That's what I understood from the Sony experts...

Yes this is what I've been told by the Sony folks also at ProFusion in Toronto.

That is all good - ideally id use Resolve - but Id want to start with a lut that was made by sony and matched the vision on the camera..

very different from the chaos that is the f3 Slog

Incedentally here is a 100% screen grab of the delogged 4k image (if it is rendering in 4k in in catalyst browse)

Honestly it looks a little like Mr Chapman had a sock over the lens when shooting.. not to mention the Sony Doughnut.

Sony is also saying that because Slog3 matches the Cineon (sp?) log curve used in Alexa Log C that Alexa LUTS should work very nicely with Slog3. I have no idea what level of truth to that but I found it odd for Sony folks to be selling SLog3 like that.

Cant actually get CB to Output proRes or DPX !

I can't succesfully output anything but colour settings...

Seems that this is reserved for Catalyst Prepare. :(
We can still stay with Resolve and use the colour settings from CB or own ones.
But I'd love to do a quick export with LUTs applied to log-footage without running
resolve. Hmm...

I don't know if that was clarified yet or not in this thread but... What will actually come out of SDI output's from FS7? Is that going to be 4K 4:2:2 10bit uncompressed? RAW only through their extension, right?

I got it worked.

1) Make the colour adjustments (or don't)
2) go to the "Browse" tab
3) select the clips you want to transcode
4) choose codec and if the colour adjustments/LUTs will be active (no ProRes on win - only OS X)
5) transcode
