FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

That Cion demo video is they way to go. It looks like a worked through script with good actors. Add to that by the look of lighting a production crew that treated the task just like shooting a feature. All pieces are in place.

I think the Cion approach and the FS7 approach are worlds apart. Sonys FS7 is squarely aimed at single operators and fair enough the official demo video shows just that. Then like with the Sphere video Sony and the creators wants to show off dynamic range, high fps and other features of the camera rather than making a cinematic demo. With that approach we wont see any great footage from the FS7.

In a way the 14 stops DR can be the blame. Sure it's great to have that range but don't use it just to show off!

It's what I've been telling my Sony folks on the bat phone-- produce a great short narrative scene to show camera at its best.

Very impressive. Some of the early Cion footage I saw showed some great color science as well.

But I'm not cancelling my FS7 order.

Just a note- I DP'd that Rapunzel trailer with a prototype Cion, though the trailer was not graded by myself. There is a very long series of notes regarding that footage and the limitations of the prototype Cion I shot with. Long story short, there a a good many shots with massive ND filter cast in the online clip that haven't been fully corrected out. The trailer was graded by the director, a good friend of mine and competent DP in his own right, but I'll need to leave my comments for later, when I'm not typing away on my phone. I'd planned on not commenting on the footage until the film itself was properly finished and graded, but I'll see about sharing my thoughts soon.

I saw the note about the IRND greenish cast. But still, David, the work is very impressive and you have done great service to AJA. We are all looking forward, I'm sure, to seeing the completed film.

I was looking at pictures of the FS7 and have a couple of questions about buttons/settings:

1. Are there any custom buttons on the body of the camera or only on the handle?

2. Related to #1, if one wants to switch on/off peaking, histogram, etc, are there buttons that can be pressed on the body or only on the handle?

My understanding is:

1. There are several custom buttons on the body including the big round ones on the operator side that are labeled for specific functions but can be changed.

2. The dedicated buttons for zebra/peaking are on the side of the lcd but other buttons cam be assigned as well.

How come no-one has ever posted this clip before, or did I miss it? I found it with a quick search on Vimeo but it's been there for months!
Steve

It's possibly been online but private for some time, or possibly it just wasn't listed previously as having been shot on the Cion. The colours look nice, highlight range looks as expected (a little limited).

Thanks Noah. I have another question if anyone can answer: Can S-log3 be used without activating CineEI mode? I thought I read somewhere that they have to be linked.

There's a Wifi adapter included with the camera but on-line information about what you can do with it is not clear. As I understand you can control the camera but I've heard there's also a low bit rate video streaming function from the camera to a tablet or similar device. Anyone have more information about functions?

I think it will be similar to the wifi unit which is sold for the pmw100 series and up. As you mentioned, low bit rate stream and controling the camera. Apertur/shutter speed etc. But I can't comfirm, only a wild guess.

It looked to me like you can just select slog3 as your gamma in 'custom' (non-cine-ei) mode.

That's correct, Noah.

Also correct on WiFi adapter.

I don't have any basis of comparison of aliasing/moire between F5 and FS7.

We're just in waiting mode until the first cameras find their way to users.

Saw a model at Sony's HQ in DC.

Great ergos overall. Liked they way the XLR's and the VF connectors don't stick out.

Not in love with the image overall. They had it going to one of their Trimaster OLED displays and nothing really popped for me.

Glass was the servo kit lens. It wasn't bad for the price.

Totally fly by wire.

When you did a quick manual snap zoom out it would literally be 2-3 seconds until the zoom caught up.

Not a great thing to hear about the zoom.

The zoom lens is still prototype, so let's hope that's the issue. It still may have been the prototype camera as well, but I understand that some dealers may be receiving shipping demos this week. Don't quote me or hold me to it-- I'm only repeating what I heard.

Yeah seemed like you could go full manual on focus but not the zoom. The zoom was very laggy for snap zooms but some may like the smoothing for slower zooms as long as you don'y mind it being less precise.
