FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

No not like that at all. A simple test that truly shows how it handles a wide DR and highlights. Go outside in bright sun,

Indeed good to see some stress tests.

What I meant about that video of the girl was that both the C500 and ALexa made her look like a human not an android.

Ive rewatched Dig recently and well there is quite a bit of android esp. on the man.

I'm sure you guys have all seen this video on the F55 / Alexa skin tones

My question is: in theory (if it's even available), you apply the LC709 TypeA LUT to Slog 3 from the FS7, would you get a similar result to the F55? Or does the wider F55 internal color gamut (that you pay quite a bit more for than the F5) make this impossible on the FS7 to get an Alexa look?

The LUTs are indeed available and available from Sony's forum: http://community.sony.com/t5/F5-F55/Release-version-3DLUT-s-for-S-Gamut3-Cine-S-Log3/td-p/287847 along with some initial instructions on how to use them which is interesting if anyone wants info on some workflow: http://community.sony.com/t5/F5-F55...-Gamut3-S-Log-Look-Profiles/m-p/282737#M12369

There is a PDF http://community.sony.com/sony/atta...F5-F55/2872/1/SonyLookProfilesSummaryV1_1.pdf which discusses the 4 available LUTs by Sony. They come in both slog2 and slog3 flavours but the link I posted is only for the slog3 ones. Here are the slog2 ones: http://community.sony.com/t5/F5-F55/NEW-3D-LUT-s-for-F55-and-F65/m-p/135617/highlight/true#M2872

I feel that the wider gamut on the F55 would only come into play with certain hues, colors, sometimes perhaps even just the type of luminance you see from neon or LED based lights, so I think in the case of skin tones and pouting models with cherry or pink bright lipstick you are going to get very close if not identical images. But of course I have no way of testing any of this myself, unless I had an F5 to put beside my F55 and shoot some "colors", so mostly I'm just making this stuff up.

As someone who has done a lot of post/grading, I can assure you that it is very easy to match the skin tones between an Alexa and Sony F3/F5F55 outputs these days. That is a piece of cake. Whether you can hit it in one shot with a LUT, is a different matter, but I don't think you would be far off with some of them. The wider gamut of the F55 will show up on the peripheral colors like lavenders, aqua, etc. But then I don't think the Alexa is neccesarily good at those colors either. What the Alexa has is nice roll-off and detail in the highlights, not neccesarily an extended color palette. There will always be slight differences in the color palette from one camera to another, but one is not necessarily better than another in this area of the color spectrum.

Agreed. And the BTS video makes them all look ridiculous.
My what the heck moment was when I saw all that expensive gear like cranes, sliders etc. and a second guy pulling focus directly on the lens (0:35). Like, what?? No money for FF? (and keeping in mind that those e-mount lenses have that focus by wire thing)

The fashion photographer in me (20 years here in Paris), just cringes when I look at that video. Sometimes I just can't get beyond the content.

I'm with you on this.….you'd know that anyway.
Never in all my years in the same game have I seen such a booking.

Embedded:

I don't see the point to upload a low resolution, highly compressed file to showcase a camera. There's so many artefacts be it from compression or poor grading so it's difficult to judge the real quality. Sometimes I get the feeling that many who get a camera first to do a test never think through things.

I think there are some nice shots in that video here and there. A bit lack of saturation/contrast but I like the opening shots, rear of helicopter at 1:14 and also really like the mood and lighting on the perfume bottle dior clip.

Needless to say, I don't think there is much to disappoint with this gem of a camera. The price is absolutely fantastic.

Anyone getting this camera is damn lucky.

yes, more saturation would give us an idea of what is actually going on with it. Still, not bad. Those night exteriors show where that camera will excel.

Indeed, Dennis. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to be shooting with it. Whenever I get it. And I finally sold the F3-- to somebody who feels very lucky to have snagged an F3 at an attractive price.

As far as what we are seeing in terms of camera footage, all that I am able to say is that there are very few pre-production cameras world-wide. Firmware is still being fine tuned. The camera will be shown at the SMPTE event at Abel Cine on Tues 10/14. There was some run and gun NYC street footage shot for purposes of the meeting but I didn't shoot it.

The latest I have heard is that shipping is on schedule. That very well could mean within the next couple of weeks and still actually ship in October. Camera body ships first. Extension unit and camera with kit lens scheduled to ship in Dec.
