FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

One good side effect of the FS7 predicted high sales is, unless everyone buys the extension unit that will eventually allow prores. There will be a ton more XAVC out there for clients to have to deal with. Hopefully making us 5/55 owners lives a little easier and possibly erasing the need to even buy the prores upgrade.
.

It also means that everybody and their dogs and their mothers and their mothers' dogs and their dog's mothers will have a FS7. The market will be over saturated driving rate prices down, making the FS7 nothing special. Kinda like you can't throw a stone without hitting somebody who has a Scarlet, and why rates went way down for those cameras.

I'm actually going to sell my F55 while its still worth something, and probably pick up 2-3, maybe even 4 FS7's.

c300 - 8 bit internal 4:2:2 recording 1080p recording up to (30 fps) - 10-11 stops dynamic usuable dynamic range with bizarre looking motion - weird shutter with motion that doesn't quite feel right and is really top heavy- cost - 12k

fs7 - 10 bit internal 4:2:2 recording 4k up to (180 FPS) - arguably around 14 stops dynamic range, better looking motion - cost around 8k-12k where you can use a speed booster and get canon glass on it and have in essence a full frame camera that balances well. with s log 3 and s gamut.cine that can look similar to the alexa - with the ability to do raw output.

hmmmm. I don't think there's much of a comparison - I wouldn't recommend to anyone to buy a c300 at this point.

Better looking motion? You've seen two videos and one of them was shot entirely 60p 4k.

I have to agree here. Too early to tell and it's better not get carried away with the hype. Also say it will look close to the Alexa?

The questions to me is..

-Will it make my life better..
Speedbooster
HFR
Well placed EFV
Lighter

-Will clients pay more
probably not

-Is the 1080 image better
Possibly not- possiby worse unless downscaling done in post.

So really buying is a lifestyle choice not a business move. (until someone actually wants 4k)

Punch in mode - would be nice.

OPLF - very unlikely IMO

S

To me it might turn out to be an easier sell with 4k and 180fps slow motion features. But the rest is just for my own comfort and FINALLY to work without any add-on EVF or recorder. No rigging either is just great.

I'm a bit torn between getting e SpeedBooster, straight metabone adapter or maybe even the Sony G 28-135.

Well, my order is placed with Abel. Don't know where I am on the list but I think I'm pretty high up. At the moment, I'm ordering the 28-135. May consider a Speedbooster E->EF or possibly the version that Abel is building together with a German company. Should be more durable than the Speedbooster, which is certainly not known for its construction.

Street price body only $7999. With 28-135 $10499. No street price yet on XDCA-FS7 extension unit. With list price at $2399, I am suspecting it is going to be right about $2K. Sony also shows VCT baseplate and LW rods for $1199 list. I'm holding off thinking that there might be some 3rd party options.

Got to move that F3. Anybody know anybody who wants one?

Good idea. Economies of scale. Can I ride your coattails and get a reduced rate as well?
Better yet, since there are so many FS7 lover's here, who is open to trying to get a GROUP BUY ?

If the camera processes slog3 cine the same way the 5/55 does and you apply the LC709A LUT in-camera or in post, then yes, extremely close to Alexa 709. It can even be hard to tell the difference.

I don't think so.

Alexa is not magic, but the internal processor reads out 2 different 14bit signals and combines
them to one 16bit output RAW signal if you want. This will nnot be matched regarding
highlight rolloff and colour space.

The FS7 - we don't know so far, but it seems there is internal 12bit readout to 10bit output in XAVC.
Even the colour is different from the F5 and more from the F55, which has a bigger
colourspace as the F5 that comes from the filter in front of the sensor.

You might not see the difference out of cam, but more so in post.

If you want the most in image quality and not only advertised data of pixels and bits,
you need to pay for it. It's that simple.

Otherwise, buy the A7s and combine it with a Atomos Shogun. Then you have s-log2 in
4k with 3200ISO...

Edit: Sony says internal 16bit A/D :Drogar-Shock(DBG): (like F5/55) here:
http://provideocoalition.com/awilt/story/122-slides-on-the-sony-pxc-fs7

We'll need to see, what that means in real life...

Alexa is magic, it has some serious highlight suppression wrangling capability not to mention mojo that is just hard to simulate or even replicate with really any other camera on this planet (maybe F35 and Genesis the exception)

P.S. At least Sony's 4K will actually be higher resolution than Amira. Haha haha

You can say it this way.

But in the end it's the double readout of the sensor:
1) 14bit hi amplification gain pass (for the shadows)
2) 14bit low amplification gain pass (for the highlights)

1+2= Alexa 16bit RAW signal with very smooth highlight rolloff

All the technojargon aside, LC709A Lut when applied to slog3 cine F5/55 footage looks extremely similar to Alexa's Rec 709 ProRes files that are recorded in-camera. I dont know if they are equal in every bit, form or quality but visually they are very close and for a lot of clients that's all that matters. If a client wants Alexa RAW they can always choose to go that way.

I agree Bill, I'm burning in a modified LC709A LUT straight in-camera and never looking back... clients love it, the Alexa look that is.

I wonder if any Fs700 or A7s guys have tried these LUTs....

Many thanks Dennis for this!
Sorry for shaky footage, I was new to the camera and trying different positions to hold it.
Colours are great, everything just pops, really nice, natural skin tones.
(I do not have Pro account on vimeo yet, so 720p only for now).

So why all movies made with F55 didn't use this magic lut to look like alexa? Did you see a million ways to die in the west? Did you look annie trailer? Lets be cops?
