FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

Loads 3D LUTs

If $9,600 is the street price, add $2000 for the battery/TC/IO dock (a must for pro production where sound is jamming cameras), we're at $11,600. Makes the jump to F5 only $4,900. F5 still(hopefully) has some serious features that dont seem to be on the FS7. Two biggies that come to mind are SR444 and Center Crop function.

Ed, well said.

Would you believe that 10 years ago I was shooting 50i on the Canon XL1se (PAL version) then converting that to 25p, then slowing down by 4% to get 24p? Yes that coupled with the P+S Technik mini35 adapter I paid $10,000 for was quite the killer combo!

EVen the guys over at REDuser are saying this is a Scarlet Killer.
General Kudos all around for Sony. They may have finally produced a camera that everyone has been asking for, for a long time.

Using a PL adapter on an E mount is not a professional solution. The E mount is too weak and was never designed to support PL cinema lenses. You can support it on rod bridge adapters but tolerances are problematic. FZ to PL sold with the F3 and F5 are much stronger built in designs. So there's still a need for the F5 / F55 for pros who use PL, but these will be more rental solutions than owner / operator cameras. I'm sold on the FS7! The strengths of the E mount:
-Adaptability for a huge range of legacy and current Canon / Nikon / Minolta glass.
-Speedbooster ultra! Full frame / Vistavision look which you can't do with the FZ mount F5 / F55 / F3 bodies. When you're fighting everyone in narratives / music videos for a more distinctive look, this may help.
The FS7 will definitely take a bite out of Canon's market and severely hurt the F5 not to mention the scarlet.
It's horses for courses, but I will probably go with the FS7 come January. If it's the F5's senssor, I think it's better than the RED Epic's sensor because of the sensitivity alone and matches the DR.

I've used a solidcamera pl mount adapter on my fs700 (when I had it) and it's a very professional solution - rock solid and shimmable. Really not a lot different from the FZ to PL adapter on my F55 as long as you have a 15mm rod solution in place which I always have. I like the E mount a lot and actually miss it on the F55 as I can't use a speed booster. I love my F55 but this camera could probably do about 50% of the jobs that I currently shoot on it, especially with the odyssey 7q on it.

This is the camera I've been hoping somebody would make for years. And here I just bought a PMW-300. Taking trade-ins, Sony?
Pretty revolutionary though I agree the FS7 is, I wouldn't write off the PMW300 just yet - for some types of work where a long zoom range is essential, 1/2" or 2/3" chips probably still have the edge. For other work, then yes, this camera looks very interesting. Horses for courses.

and abelcine has the fs7 listed for $9600 add the breakout box to get prores or RAW that's $2500 more totaling $12000. add the 7Q theres another $45/5000.00. So for $17000.00 im not so sure that's enough for fs700 users to make the switch. for that price I'd much rather find the means to move into an F5 instead. The fs7 is a new camera with a 2 year old sensor. its a great camera but I have the fs700/7q i got RAW, 4k2hd. 240 fps, 120fps in 4k. instead I'm gonna hold out for the fs8 or F6. Since the street price is announced Im curious to see how many of us really do jump ship.

I have a pre-order with them. Dealers get official pricing on Monday. They listed the FS700 that high when it was first announced. The street price will be corrected Monday.

that would be good then. thought Sony pulled a fast one, i think it would still be worth it, with that wonderful lens under 12 grand, 4k internal, weather sealed. if I didn't already own the fs700 i would jump all over it. all the best to you

I am betting the FS7 body only will cost $7999 (or $7995). With the lens I would bet around $10,000 (maybe $9,999) not any higher than $10,499 is my guess.

tis tempting indeed. despite the added girth over the c100, it does tick a whole bunch of added bonus options. will sure be interesting what canon has to say

Canon had already announced a $500 "instant rebate" in the C100.

I do believe now that a lower street price will be announced in the coming days. B&H is listing body only for $9999 with Nov 15 ETA.

This camera hits a sweet spot for so many users (me included). And I have been sitting on this for 3 weeks under NDA.

A few pages back, someone had asked about mount. Yes, this is the same mount as the FS-700. E-mount is versatile. And I would not hesitate to use a high quality PL adapter with rods and a support.

It must have been tough not being able to say a word about this camera for 3 weeks.
I still have E and A mount lenses and adapters from my FS100 and A55 camera.

I put myself "on the list" for the camera.

I concur.

The F55 and F5 originally had an "announced" price of $34,900 and $19,400 respectively, which ended up being $28,900 and $16,500.

Apply those percentages to the FS7 announced price and you end up with a street price of around: $8000-$8995 for body only, $10,000 with lens.

What a shake up none of us were expecting. It's great for everyone however, no matter what. Even the RED guys are looking at.

Thanks I'll check w Abel in the morning.
I'm already thinking about what lenses to get with this. My F3 is set up with Nikon zooms and Zeiss Nikon Primes.
Have to stay on a similar budget for now , but the big advantage of this camera to me for my work which always includes plenty of doc & handheld footage is steady shot and even push auto focus on some lenses though I'm agnostic about the latter.
My buddy has an FS 700 and swears by the stock 18-200 for run & gun outdoors. Indoors he uses a Canon 24-105 with speedboooster which amounts to a low DOF f2.8 16-70 equivalent . No auto focus but IS.

The new 28-135 lens looks fabulous, but frankly for general doc work I'd rather have a 16-70 range. 28mm is quite limiting and I'm not sure how much I would need a powered zoom that's that long. The Sony Zeiss 16-70 looks very good also but then again its F4 and the Canon becomes an f2.8 in practice. Either one is probably good enough glass for the run around stuff. I don't have experience with either lens though so I'll have to play around. Since a lot of the reason my clients like 4K is to be able to punch in , that 16-70 range gets even more valuable.

I love the idea of putting speed booster on my f2.8 Nikons and F2 or even 1.4 primes for really low light.

Hope you guys are right about the price as I would like to negotiate this deal without going too broke. Still PO'd at what a drop the F3 took, and hoping that won't happen again so fast. At least it pay'd for itself - but not this year.

Any thoughts about what this camera is missing? I don't see too much so far esp if you can go PL with the rail-fitted adapter.

I imagine the next thing out from Sony might be a dragon type sensor , but who knows what's on the horizon.

Lenny
