New Sony F5/F55 Forum

I certainly hope this is not the kind of response we'll be getting in Sony's forum. This is no consumer camera and for ~$40k Sony better sing a different tune.

I think they're doing a pretty good job over at that forum. Peter C. has answered every single topic and seems pretty responsive. He even answered the one about how soon the F5/F55 might be superseded by another camera. And he's taking suggestions for an angled audio adapter.

I can understand why they won't divulge certain details about their sensor. This info might help the competition!

it might help sales. Red, and Canon more recently, manage to get people worked up into a froth about their gear by talking up the tech.

you know... go out there and sell the camera.

Regardless of what Sony thinks, it's divulged http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...attern&p=1986238952&viewfull=1#post1986238952 and if they want to really position themselves amonst the competition which interacts with its customers day in and day out in forums no matter how frustrating discussions, questions and posts can be... then they need to step up.

I want Sony to win this "war".
I'm not sure if Mitch's article really divulges any secrets. His article is based on Sony's published information that the F55 CFA is the same the F65 and not the same as the F5. This mainly has to do with the dyes that are used in order to achieve the wider gamut. He calls them Bayer filter arrays because they all have the Bayer filter pattern: 50% green, 25% blue, 25% red. Even Q67 has those proportions.

I think Sony is catching on with the social media trends. They're using blogs and Twitter more and now they're hosting this new F5/F55 forum. I think it's helpful and positive but in the grand scheme of things the best thing Sony can do to win this "war" is to just design very good products that people want, sell them at competitive prices and then deliver (good supply, no bugs, highly reliable). At that point, the product will usually sell itself.

That's true. It certainly might be of interest to some people. Canon really upselled their C300 sensor during their launch event. But they have Larry Thorpe over there and he loves talking about that stuff. So a lot of this can be due to just individual personalities within a company. Who knows what Sony's reasons are. Maybe someone over there is just more cautious. The F5/F55 was apparently a very big program involving over 500 engineers. I just don't blame them if they want to protect some information. Engineers would love to talk about the tech, but at the same time, they worked hard to learn whatever secrets they have and you don't want to give it away. Of course, just saying whether this is Q67 doesn't seem like a big deal, but maybe they were told to just keep a lid on everything...or at least for now.

Actually Mitch's article clear up alot as the only similarity the F55 shares with the F65 has nothing to do with the sensor at all - only the filter itself and more specifically the color dyes used to make it.

The press release indicated that the F55 delivered color similar to the F65 which can be misleading depending on how you read it so the article helps put everything in perspective. In basic terms the F5 and F55 appear very much to be bayer pattern sensors but the filter used on the F5 is meant for REC709 color space while the F55 is meant for an extended color gamut beyond what eben broadcast monitors can display. Sony (or the article at least) claims no other filter in the world can produce this level of color.

All that aside, sounds like new cutting edge technology delivered to us by none other than Sony! Go Sony go! :2vrolijk_08:

What kind of colorspace would the RED with dragon sensor live in? Would be nice to see a comparison. I know people keep arguing price, but to me the prospects of the F55 are pretty damn decent for the price...

I can't speak to the colorspace of RED with or without dragon, but when you're talking about color that broadcast monitors can't even display on the F55 or F65 it sounds quite vast doesn't it.

Yes whatever the price of the F55 does end up being, it will be 101% worth it. It is a film camera without the film as someone else had said it recently, yet with so many more options and possibilities.

Anyone interested in these cameras should really check out Sony's forum linked in the first post. Sony posts some very interesting info over here. For example, here are a bunch of CAD drawings and measurements.

Looks like you broke into Sony HQ and recovered some top secret documents, good job!

Guys with all due respect, let's help out with some of the stupid comments being posted over on the Sony forums. Some people really seem to have no class or clue, and I think as "F owners" we can do some justice over there!
