Canon has some competition now with the 24-105 f4L. Sigma is claiming their version wont have a drop in exposure either. The Sigma is a little heavier and bigger with an 82mm front filter size.

Sigma says that, as with other Art series models, the 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM lens has been designed with high image quality as a key goal. A complex formula of 19 elements in 14 groups includes three aspheric, two "F" low dispersion, and two special low dispersion elements, aimed at controlling vignetting, astigmatism, field curvature, distortion, and chromatic aberration. A Super Multi-layer Coating, meanwhile, keeps flare and ghosting in check, as does a bundled lens hood. And Sigma's Thermally Stable Composite material is used in the lens barrel, to keep thermal shrinkage to a minimum. For attractive bokeh, the lens aperture diaphragm has nine rounded blades.

I'm pretty happy with the 18-35 and competition is good especially if this lens can out perform the Canon version at a better price. Please let it be parfocal!

Nice looking lens.

Looks like Sigma pulled the link, likely legal in the release literature. I hope that the rumored 24-70/2 OS HSM Art lens is right behind this!

I dont' find the equivalent Canon to be that impressive, honestly... just me. If judging Sigma's recent strides, price is going to be too low not to own, and quality will be great through the range.

Edit: also, Sigma... 50/1.2 (A) Please!!!

Link is live again...I really hope this doesn't suffer from the loss of exposure the Canon does on the long end....If it doesn't, I'm in for sure!

I have just recently purchased the Canon 24-105 but if this is at the same level of the 18-35mm in build and optical quality then i'll be buying it for sure.

I don't like the ring focus because it's close to body camera (like as Nikon 24-120 f4 or Tamron 24-70 2.8) and i've recently bought a 24-105 and i like it (position of ring focus and zoom)

I'm not super in love with Canon's 24-105 f4 lens myself, but I use the heck out of it because it's such a great range and has very nice IS, and the build is solid. It's plenty sharp, too. But I'll definitely keep an eye on this one to see how it compares. I do agree about the ring positions, though - I much prefer the layout of Canon's lens.

The only thing that scares me about this is the weight. The Canon 24-105L is nice and light, my Sigma 18-35 is pretty heavy. If they could've delivered a 2.8 here, I would've snapped it up instantly.

This lens in a 2.8 would be massive and way more heavy, not to mention cost a small fortune....if it could be done optically too would be another question. @Erik, thanks mate, let us hope for parfocal and this thing should smash the Canon, especially for those who run and gun and need the true constant aperture for quick reframes....Phil

I will be selling the Canon 24-105 and grabbing this lens ASAP. I LOVE my 18-35.
Looking at the pictures of the lens, I do wish it would have the same size focus ring as the 18-35 - as it looks a bit smaller.
But, I have to say that if it does not lose light throughout the focal range, that that alone is worth the purchase for me. I don't care what anyone says, for the type of work that I do, having the loss of light on the 24-105 makes it so much more of a PITA to match exposure quickly.

I was at the Photo Plus Expo in New York Friday and Sigma had a pre-production EF mount 24-105 at their booth. They would not let me attach the lens to my C100. However, I was able to take a quick look at a 24-105 lens that was attached to Sigma's SD1 still camera. I did not see very much difference between the Sigma 24-105 and my Canon 24-105. The lens will retail for under $1K.
Update: B&H lists the pre-order price as $899 USD, with the Canon EF version shipping Nov. 4th. From an ergonomic standpoint, if you did a blind fold test, it would be hard to tell the two lenses apart. I was hoping the Sigma lens would have an internal zoom, but the lens extends when zooming just like the Canon. As mentioned earlier, the Sigma 24-105 lenses at Photo Plus were pre-production samples. When the Sigma EF version ships, an image quality comparision test between it and the Canon version should prove very interesting.

What was the focus ring like?

I'm not sure how well it will sell. The Canon version is so cheap on the used market because it has been in kits for like 10 years. You can get a newish one for under $700. New it's $1150. If it's priced around $750 and is a high performer it would be hard to not buy it.

Having followed the development of this lens since it surfaced (looking at mtf charts and reading up on official info and impressions), I think it will resolve marginally better than the Canon and maybe have less distortion. It will also show more constant exposure performance, i.e T-stop, through the focal lengths.

I don't expect this lens to show the same jaw dropping performance we've seen from the 35 1.4 or the 18-35 1.8.

As a 24-105 (Canon) owner, I don't think I will see a reason to upgrade. Still leaving the door open for Canon or Sigma to launch a stellar 24-70 2.8 IS. I'm a bit annoyed that I "can't" go for the current brilliant 24-70 2.8 II…
