Panasonic has expanded its professional AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) product line with the introduction of the AG-HMC71 AVCHD camcorder.

As the industry's first shoulder-mount AVCHD camcorder, the AG-HMC71 records high-quality 1080i images onto readily available SD/SDHC memory cards.

I suspect the cheaper end of the market. AVC-HD at 13 Mbs is likely to be comparable to HDV quality wise, but need even more power to process, and be even more difficult to edit. The main advantage is a lot of material can be stored on a very cheap SD card.

If you read between the lines of that press release you get more than a hint of the market it's aimed at:

It can be used by law enforcement agencies for training or surveillance; by schools for video production, live staging, and documentation; or by broadcasters and newspapers for Web journalism.

My new Panasonic TV has an SD slot and should show JPEGs and AVC-HD directly from a card with no extra hardware. I can see this camera being very useful for professional applications such as role play - record a session, put card in TV, play back - no extra equipment, cables, nothing. And the native files should be able to be put on blue laser discs with no transcoding.

I don't think it's really intended for serious film making.

If it's the "first" shoulder mount AVCHD-camera from Panasonic, then it's supposed to be this one: LINK

We discussed this here already, but it's not more than a shoulder-mount SD1...

So it hat NOTHING to do, what most of us would call "professional" even if Panasonic calls it "professional". But it's still an interesting camera for event-videographers... weddings etc. - but neither for indies nor for broadcast... the chips are tiny 1/4", the codec is NOT intraframe as AVC-intra is... so the "professional" solution we are waiting for is a "low-budget" solution of this one: LINK

This camera offers: AVC-intra with 100Mbps, AVC-intra 50 Mbps, DVCPRO-HD and DVCPRO-50.... so you have ANY format you desire... and no GOPs

I'm very sure, THIS will come after the HVX: an AVC-intra 100Mbps camcorder (hopefully at least with DVCPRO-HD also...).

It's the UglyCam(tm) that's been posted here before. It's basically a rehoused HSC1U in a hideously ugly shoulder-mount body. Probably aimed at about a $2500 price tag, definitely an entry-level cam (no focus ring on the lens even; you focus by pressing either the "+" or "-" buttons!) But it does have a proper professional audio section on it.
