New short movie.

Hey. My buddy and I from Norway was given an assignment from school
that we should write a script for a short that should be around 4 minutes long.
We wrote a story about two friends; Henrik and Hans, who lives in an apartment
and for some time ago Hans got blind from drinking imported liquor that contained
metanol;. We then teamed up with two danish guys from our school, who also
play the characters, and went on with it. The characters speak deutch, but movie
has english subtitles :)

We shot all footage on my DVX-100 PAL, equipped with the 16:9 anamorphic adapter and edited it with Premiere pro, we also mixed some sound i Cubase.
This is the first and only movie we have made.

The file is 50mb large, and is in quicktime-format.

alright needs english sub-titles but other then that I might have got the gist of it. But I think you probably wanted technical opinions anyways so I think you just have to look at light and make sure there is enough and it looks right. There are two scenes in this movie which had enough light which were so good they looked like they were from a different film. #1 in the second morning when he is wearing the tanktop he passes through the kitchen in front of the bright window and #2 outside with the shopping cart. These clips looked awesome Try to get the look in every scene and you'll be happy with the results. Awesome stuff man keep it up.

man that was awesome
even though it wasn't in english I understood what was going on
..
keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback!
You're absolutely right about the light, we did very little of it, most of
the scenes contains just natural light from windows, roof lamps etc.
So i will definately work more on lighting scenes the next time we shoot.

Keep em' coming :)

Man, the scene with the trolley (Shopping Cart) at the end looks very good!

Did you use a straight forward normal DVX100AE there? Normal lens, normal settings ?

Did you CC in Premiere?

thanks,
Derrick

I used the first version, DVX-100 Pal with the anamorphic adapter.
The scene file i used for the outdoor scene was the the default
out of the box "F5"-file. Wich i didn't choose on purpose, but
the knob got turn when the camera was in the bag. It turned out fine though.
And yes, I color corrected it in Premiere.

:cheesy: Awesome work. I liked your camera and sound work. It's a very strong four minute film.

The naturalistic lighting worked perfect. When avatuar saw Eternal Sunshine he probobally thought it was under lit too. Don't listen to him. It looked great.

I thought this was well done. Loved the ominous music. Was it Sigor Rus? I thought it looked good and played well. Disagree with the previous poster. I felt the natural light worked well for the piece. Also the camera movement was interesting yet not too flashy. Only complaint is the acting of the blind guy on his first line. He looks like a frat boy doing a retarded man impression but inside is cracking up. Other than that, good work.

That was straight ill! Meaning it was good! The lighting was fine. Natural! I was more involved with the story then the technical stuff. Kawazy!

This is amazing, i didnt know the film would get so much positive feedback

The song wich plays to the blind character is: "Boards of canada - Over the horizon radar", and the song wich plays to Henrik is "Aphex Twins - Stone in focus".
Hehe, I know, the first line from the blind guy is a little weird. He is supposed
to be suffering from a little braindamage after the metanol incident, but it became
more of a funny joke for us who know him.

Thanks again, hoping for more comments.

most excellent! I was very impressed. Enjoyed the wide angle look, great cutting between sequences. Good work

Good colors and pretty light. good work. Did you use some light in interior shootings?

thanks

Very impressive. I think the lighting looks great. Sometimes people forget how great natural light can look if exsposed correctly. This is a prime example of that. The editing was top notch, and a very good story. It looked great.

There is only one scene where we used extra light apart from the natural, and
that was the scene where it's a close-up of the blind guy's hand that connects the vacuum-cleaner
outlet to the wall and then the camera moves over to the picture that shows the two friends holding booze and screaming.
We used an old portable clip-on sortalike IKEA lamp to light up that picture.

Nicely done. Good story and nice filming. Yes, the ending was funny and you cut it at the right moment.

You mention using the anamorphic adapter. How much trouble did you have shooting handheld with the adapter? For example, keeping focus. Were you using a focus ring?

Using the the adapter wasn't much of a trouble since most of the scenes are
shot with the lens zoomed almost all out and the distance between the lens
and the main object was often the same during one shot. Though, getting
sharp focus is limited when zooming in, you can se that the close-up of the
coffee mug isn't sharp enough.
There were only two scenes when i had to adjust focus during shots, and that
was the one in the beginning where the focus goes from the bed to the picture,
and in the bathroom when the focus goes from hernik to the close recorder
when he presses play. The times i drove the camera forward to an object,
f.ex. the newspaper-article on the wall with the picture of hans, i pre-adjusted the focus
sharp to where the camera-path was going to end.
And no, i didn't use any extra focus ring, just the one that's on the camera stock.

Thanks again! :)

Beautiful work! Great moody score. Sharp images. I thought that the camera looked a little "floaty" in some shots but not too bad. Cool storyline. Well acted. This is everything that a short film should be. Keep it up.

That was really great! I thought your pacing was very good and I could follow the story easily despite not knowing the language. Great payoff at the end.
