NEW Screengrabs - opinions on MagicBullet wanted

Re: .Screengrabs from new short

Re: .Screengrabs from new short

So the consensus is too soft. Those grabs as mentioned before are tests for Magic Bullet I've been playing with. I'll probably show some different styles in the near future you guys can give 2 cents on.

Dark Avenger - yes it's the crow. It's a cool fountain I have. The other guy is Humongous... anyone now what movie he's from?

Storyteller - Magic Bullet for NLE. For Final Cut Pro. I've got a g4, and so far, Final Cut has crashed twice and I've had to login as a new user to work Final cut. I assume it has something to do with Magic Bullet. It also takes a damn long time to render, so I'll be finding the best possible filters before doing any serious rendering. I combined 2 looks for the shots. The man has "Neo" look and a lessened version of Diffusion Max(which essentially creates the softness, though I did record with the detail at -7). The sink/mirror - which is a split screen, had the lessened diffusion max and "Coolish" look.

Since I bought Magic Bullet I'll for sure be using it for upcoming projects, though I definitely like the DVX as it is... but since I dropped the cash into it, I'm gonna use it. The main idea behind the purchase is to try and have an alternative to on camera filters and lighting packages that I really can't afford... but of course the jury is still out.

This message is also at the start of the thread:

So, I did another set(don't worry, I won't keep doing this - possibly once more tops), anyways. I've redid some with different settings and also included the originals for a few.

Let me know what you think. I tried to lessen the softness a little and found an alternate look(Punchy) that I like.

Re: NEW Screengrabs - opinions on MagicBullet want

I think I have to get a copy of this magic bullet thing. Looks even more film like color wise than the original dvx footage I've seen throughout this board.

About your new grabs: To me, it depends on what those scenes are from in the film. If it's from a dream sequence like I thought, then I think the original softness serves the story better. But if it's not a dream sequence, then I'd say go with this second test set. I'd be curious to see how the whole sequence looked when it's in motion though. Easy to complain about a still image when all you're doing is studying the frame and not watching a film.

You mentioned before how long it took to render using MB in FCP. Did you do the test on a whole scene or just on a grab? Either way, what's the average amount of time it took? I'm considering using this on my film as I have a flashback sequence that would be suited to some diffusion and I haven't a clue how to do it in FCP without some sort of plugin like Magic Bullet.

Great stuff by the way. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Re: NEW Screengrabs - opinions on MagicBullet want

Storyteller: It seems to vary, but consistently so far it's like every second=one minute(that's with two filters). It seems like something you'd do little tests on before rendering an entire show, and I'd personally probably apply the filters to each individual clip that makes up an edited timeline as opposed to one entire sequence of your film. That way you can adjust any shots that are for example a little too dark or soft etc.

There is an actual "dreamy look" filter. The best one is the bleach bypass, but from what I can gather from my tests it needs a very well lit scene to work appropriately.

You can download a demo version off of their website that you can test out all the looks(i think), it just has a watermark on it. www.redgiantsoftware.com

As I've mentioned, I'd rather use real lighting setups and on camera filters, but I'm trying this as a low budget alternative. Hopefully I can come across the best way to use this program and pull off some good looking stuff.

Good work so far! Can't wait to see this...AND The House...still waiting to know the ending!

Thanks for doing this and letting us learn as you learn.

Yeah, I find it ironic that Panasonic is giving away the Magic Bullet for Editors with DVX's right now. What magic bullet does is what the camera already does!

My advice is to light the set a bit more, or acctually less as it may be. The backgrounds are too bright, fighting my eye to look at them instead of the tallent. Especially coinsidering the mood of the piece, a bright evenly lit living room is not spooky or moody; as well the tile in the bathroom is very bright. I would just mask off those areas and drop the brightness of them.

i believe panasonic's bundling magic bullet for editors, not the full version of magic bullet suite. magic bullet for editors contains preset looks, film damages w/o the 24p option of the full version.

Re: NEW Screengrabs - opinions on MagicBullet want

just to through in my 2 cents about the softness.

You can ask everyone which we like better, but I don't see how its our disicion, its ur movie. I dont think they're ugly, they look really soft, but thats a stylistic choice, and we also dont know the context of ur film.

if ur doing tests do get the best "film look" to use on future projects, then well, yeah its pretty damn soft, but it looks cool and different, so dont immediatly pull away from it for a certain project just because we don't understand the context. If you think it feels right for the project, do it and everyone will probably understand when we see a finished project.

;D

I did say it was the "for Editors" version in my post, and you even copied that I said in your post.

Is it one of those days?

Re: NEW Screengrabs - opinions on MagicBullet want

bwhaha! my bad...but the version we're both talking about, "magic bullet for editors" does not have the 24p option as it's big brother...shoot 24p ala dvx, choose your preset, adjust to taste.

Re: NEW Screengrabs - opinions on MagicBullet want

I really dont see the point of mb in fcp without the de-interlace but then again - I dont see the point of the of it full stop whilst using the dvx in 25p mode. At the end of the day - the amount of render time that goes in  - is ridiculous. I have tried mb in ae & boy it takes over night rendering for a 1/2 min clip on a g5. I quite like the natress film look & 55m but give me the 3 way color corrector on top of the 25p & Im set.

Re: NEW Screengrabs - opinions on MagicBullet want

I like the Neo setting and the coolness looks of MagicBullet for Editors - but I am editing a 100-minute feature in FCP. It seems it would take a month to render if I used it to color-correct the majority of the film. Anyone ever use it for longer form projects?

The grabs look similar to the SKYCAPTAIN movie (The glowing)
