New RED Renders..

OK, so I had some free time this afternoon and decided to start at modelling the newest version of Red One. I know that the red guys are busy trying to make a camera and might not always have the time to spend trying to mockup different configurations for your viewing pleasure - so here I am :)

Per some other posts I was going to tackle this configuration first:

MINIMALIZED CAGE - a trimmed down version of the cage with a handle, battery, and drive. Also with a lens - I'd like recommendations on preferred lens'

Any other recommendations? Maybe we can come up with a few then vote..

Awesome Curt. Reds renders are a bit more artistic then illustrative. Nice to see the renders in better light.

Im curious to see it rigged with it's viewfinder and articulated arm LCD. Im assuming there is just a cord that plugs into the side for each and then you mount them wherever youd like but its difficult to tell from their renders.

CVB,

Thanks for working on the renders! I personally would like to see the camera with just a handle, bridgeplate, 15mm rods and the LCD mounted somewhere. Maybe a cooke and FF for fun.

I have to say I am a little confused about the LCD and how it will be articulated as well. I have worked with a Marshall on an israeli arm on an HVX and I have to say it's sort of cumbersome when you have it off the sticks. Mebbe the LCD will be nice and light. I really hope they focus on making this something that can work handheld and not be too gangly.

BTW, how's your product coming along? I seriously can't wait to rent one. I have been developing moco ideas ever since I laid eyes on it.

Not nearly as clear (or compact) as what you're probably working on Curt, but here's a mock-up of the camera, sans-cage, on compact rails setup with viewfinder. (This is from Junyo's video of the RED Q&A, about 6:30 minutes in - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLwPc4V56gA)

Hi CVB,

Great renders by the way. I'd like to see a cageless, run and gun, style of RED on a tripod. I'd like to see the mic, handle, batteries, drive, (cables maybe), wide angle lense, matt box and opened lcd screen mounted on the left side. The whole thing should fit in a small carryon backpack - fully assembled (except maybe for the matt box) - ready to shoot. Thanks!

I wonder what the final version is going to look like; the image being 'the best thing ever' aside, it doesn't look like something anyone would run around an shoot with

Where are they going with this thing ?

Thanks for the comments... the renders I posted were totally ghetto, I didn't even apply textures yet. Based on the comments so far I think I'll take a stab at a bad-ass setup. I'll also post some close ups of the details that might not be readily visible in Red's images.

Our product is progressing well. We just got new motor driver PCBs in and are in the process of testing the new layout ( we decided to make our own motioncontrol/driver boards) Were planning on having everything ready by Janurary.

I'll see if I can some more renderings up by this afternoon..

Working on it right now... Sweet pics, now I dont have to zoom in 50:1 and squint any more :)

You're my hero CVB.

I'd like to voice my support for Greg Voevodsky's views. The more I think about the cage the more it freaks me out. Also, please consider putting the battery and hard-drive UNDER the camera body. Here's a portion of a post I made earlier today:

I would love to eventually see a super-compact setup down the road. Months ago CVB suggested placing all of the IN/OUT connectors under the red body. I thought this was an excellent suggestion as this seemed to be the best area for adding essentials with out destroying the compactness, ergonomics or even aesthetics.

Now that Red has removed the battery and hard-drive from the body proper, I see a real risk of a Red-Christmas tree phenomenon, with ornaments dangling from every direction (in a rail-less config. that is). While the Red body is elegant and beautiful, no-one is going to shoot much without a battery and hard-drive.

Here's my 'super-compact config' suggestion: I wonder if Red would consider putting a removable solid magnesium chase directly underneath the Red-body, which could house the hard-drive and battery. This could be sold in two sizes for light or heavy storage/battery life. This chase could be mounted directly to the bdoy-tripod mount and would have it's own tripod mount underneath, and could also house rods for long-lens support. I realize that this would make the camera taller but ultimately this is much less offensive than most of the alternatives.

I think there is a lot of support for an ultra-compact config on this forum. What ideas would work???

I agree that having the ability to mount the battery and drive magazine directly to the camera body would be useful for alot of situations.

Looking at the camera you dont get the idea you can just "pick it up and go."

Even when shooting digital cinema there is great value in having a very quick and streamline workflow for setting up/rigging the camera.
