New Premiere Elements 9 version works with GH1 / GH13 footage

With Premiere Elements versions 7 and 8, here at least the playback from the timeline was very poor with major blocky artifacts - in one version, 720p had the problem and 1080i was OK, in the other version it was the other way round. Combining the two formats in one project was a no-no.

I'm happy to report that they've sorted out this issue in the new version 9 just released. They rather boldly say that the trial version is fully functional, but it's not entirely true as anything requiring AVCHD transcoding gives a black watermarked screen on the playback monitor, but if you pay for it, that's fixed.

I believe they have a return policy if you buy and then find that (for some reason) it doesn't work for you.

There's also a Mac version now, which I think is a first for Premiere Elements. I've only tried the PC version.

It's a pretty well-featured program but the engine is a bit slow, requiring rendering of transitions before they play back properly (depending on the spec of the files being replayed). Personally I'll probably be using Nero Vision Xtra for simple stuff (very fast in use) and Premiere Elements for more serious stuff. Of course for seriously serious stuff you won't be using any of these low-end programs.

Note that I'm a PAL user and haven't tested what happens with 24fps footage.

I had to create my own export preset to do it, but as far as I can see it was correctly set and the info from the player I used confirmed that it was 1080p24.

And indeed it shimmers, especially around the tree branches. Very obvious, no point in trying to upload it.

I'll see if there's a setting I can use which might make any difference but I doubt it.

Did the same thing in my favourite app (the humble Nero Vision Xtra) and it does it just fine. I set it to AVCHD compatible, NTSC, 23.97fps, ticked the "motion-adaptive" box next to frame rate, sample format = Progressive and ticked the "motion-adaptive deinterlacing" box next to that, ticked "super resolution", and bit rate was set to 14000 because I chose a default quality setting of "HDTV Full HD".

No shimmer in that, and nothing else obviously amiss that my inexpert eye could see.

I've now read through the whole of the original thread - http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=203527 - and I think I need to clarify what I'm seeing with the Premiere Elements render. What I call "shimmer" in this case is a rapid pulsing of the detail of the shot, which if I play it frame by frame shows excessive detail for two frames, then too little detail for two frames, then too much detail for two frames, etc etc.

Whether that's the "shimmer" described in the original thread I don't know - perhaps not. Anyway, the Premiere Elements render is unusable and the Nero render is fine - imho.

However, I don't think one can necessarily blame Premiere Elements for that, as it's possible that I'm simply using the wrong export settings (though I can't see anything obviously set wrong).

[Edit - here's the export settings readout (part) from Premiere Elements -

Output:
NTSC 1920x1080 23,976fps Deinterlaced
Pixel aspect ration Widescreen 16:9
Profile high, level 4.0
Source:
