New PIX-E recorders/monitors from Sound Devices

Would UHD/4K ever be possible via SDI with a firmware update or is the hardware limited? Thank you.

The PIX-E5 uses 3G-SDI. That's enough bandwidth for 1080p, but not enough for 4K or UHD. You would need 6G-SDI to handle 4K/30p, and 12G-SDI for 4K/60p. I'm sure Paul will correct me if I'm getting this wrong, but I don't think it would be possible to add 4K/UHD over SDI to the PIX-E5 series, they'd need new hardware to support 12G-SDI.

Well, that sure looks like it'd work, yes, up to 4K/30. Obviously it'd have to be tested to be sure, but based on the description I don't see why it wouldn't work... logistically you'd have to figure out a way to power it of course...

Having attempted to use other devices to do something similar in the opposite direction, 4K HDMI->SDI, I can assure you that it is not something you should assume will work.

With the 7Q+, I need to run two 3G-SDIs into it to capture UHD, right? But I only have one 12G-SDI output. How can I make that work?

You can use this box:

Why the spec for the output of your camera is up to 12G-SDI, I believe that at this time it is not sending out anything above a 6G-SDI signal. Therefore this box is in fact compatible. The fact that it is from the same manufacturer certainly helps, as it is built to matching specs.

Convergent Design has tested using a Blackmagic Design camera outputting 4K over SDI and through this box to convert the signal into dual-link 3G-SDI. It works just fine.

For anyone questioning why one would want to bother to do such a thing rather than record internally on the camera, take a look at the cost per gig of their media is compared to ours, think about how much you may shoot and decide if this makes the investment worthwhile. Don't forget about all of the excellent monitoring functions we include as well.

BTW, not trying to hijack someone else's thread here, just answering a question. If you wish to ask more about our product, I suggest we start a new thrad so that others may continue to discuss the PIX-E devices here. Don't wish to be rude.

I recently e-mailed Atomos and a rep said that Blackmagic changed their SDI SMPTE standard, which makes it now compatible to shoot UHD with the URSA with their recorder.

What are your thoughts?

Hi Emanuel,

Haven't read the whole thread .. it's like a novel, but seems like Sony would be the best to answer your question as to why the a7RII is overheating ... there is a lot going on in that small chassis. We could logically assume that there is a a7RII bug that causes it's internal codec DSP to activate (and thus draw more current) when record is pressed even if internal recording is disabled. If that is a bug, Sony should be able to fix that, however, I am not privvy to the a7RII's internal hardware/firmware architecture, so that is a big assumption!

Paul

Thanks Paul!

Can you help us out (and your sales department too : D) to figure out what's going on here with triggering an a7RII (reducing time recording 'cause sensor overheating) via HDMI?

You're welcome,

Mitch,
Not to be rude but..I've emailed your folks on some basic 7Q+ questions weeks ago to no avail. What's up with that?

Don't know, I have not tested it. I know that previously they were not compatible.

I'm sorry to hear that. Please forward the email to mitch --- at --- convergent-design --- dot --- com or send me a PM and I will respond directly or get the appropriate person to respond to you ASAP.

With the URSA, if you set the camera to a project rate higher than 4K30p the camera is outputting a 12G-SDI signal and the camera supports project rates up to 4K60p (the camera always outputs the project rate, not the sensor rate) and has behaved this way since shipping.

The Shogun is advertised as 12G-SDI also, but at the same time only advertises support up to 4K30p which is only 6G-SDI.

The URSA has been compatible with the Shogun since Firmware 2.3 for URSA.

Hey Hook, will the Studio 4K camera work with the Shogun as well in UHD?

I'm wondering if it will capture 10-bit 4K from HDMI, or just 8-bit. The former requires HDMI 2.0, the latter HDMI 1.4.
