New PIX-E recorders/monitors from Sound Devices

Terrific. Is there any hope that we'll see those same frame guides transferred over to the original PIX240 or is all development on that discontinued now? I'm very keen on the PIX-E5 for an onboard monitor, but my PIX240 has become the backbone of my director/client monitor setup, and having frame guides on it would really help out.

On a related note -

Transcend, a maker of flash memory and SSD drives, announced several new USB flash drives in 128 GB and 256 GB capacities. They include the 256 GB JetFlash 780, the rugged 128 GB JetFlash 810, the classic JetFlash 700/730 and the capless JetFlash 790K/790W.

Along with one of the highest capacities on the market, the JetFlash 780 flash drive supports read speeds of up to 210 MB/s and write speeds of up to 140 MB/s, which should make transferring files blazing fast.

SmallHD is trying to mop up customers fast for its 502. The faster Sound Devices launch the Pix series better it is for them.

Two very different devices. The SmallHD 501/2 is a pure on camera monitor, much lighter, great for gimbals and run and gun. i don't have the Pix-E, but specs wise it is heavier and thicker, as a monitor more suited for locked down shots. Unless you need the recorder, the SmallHD comes closest to a perfect versatile on cam monitor.

That's even more the case when you account for the SideFinder option.

The Pix-E is a stronger competitor IMO to the Shogun and Odyssey, and for some things that I'm going to want to film (mountaineering), a better choice when mated with an a7s-sized critter like an AXIOM Beta. Or, I suppose, an a7s. ;)

Exciting that this is already available.

Is there any chance that the PIX-E5H might drop a little earlier than the announced date as well?

Now that it is shipping, has anybody got trigger recording working with their Sony camera? (Specifically an F3.... though I reckon it is unlikely anybody has that combination yet!)

As tossing up between it and the vastly vastly cheaper BMD VA, and this is one of those things which would help tip the balance towards the PIX-E5

wow, only $300 for the audio add-on. very happy to hear that. the only standout question i have is anamorphic desqueeze. the shogun and odyssey address this. and i hope, hope, hope the PIX-E line-up will too. i've posed the question on Facebook (and twitter) but haven't heard back yet.

also, I wonder how much the kit with the sunhood and batteries is? i assume it won't be over-inflated based on the numbers we've seen so far. $150 maybe?

Have you heard back yet as to if it comes with anamorphic desqueeze or if it is on the books for a future firmware update?

SDI triggers work with Sony, yes!
