New panasonic HD camera three 1/3 inch chips, "the new DVX"

But the HVX ist still better, right?
Everytime a new camera comes out I'm going crazy.
I think I wasted my money on the wrong camera - especially the P2 cards.
But that's not the case, is it?

You and me BOTH!!! We won't know WHAT the case is until the camera comes out.

However, what camera is asked for the MOST by name? HVX200.

But editing will still be a hassle. Right now you can get maybe one stream of AVC-HD playing in realtime, vs. about 10 streams of DVCPRO-HD!

Well, frankly I'd probably just convert the dalies to ProRes 422 'cause that's just how I roll. 20Mbps AVC-HD ought to look good compared to the 40Mbps 720pn DVCProHD, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see how that works out.

P.S. I said it when we saw the prototype and I'll say it again; this camera looks like boiled ass. I'd still use it, but why does it have to look like some kitchy plastic raygun?

I have been waiting for this one. When AVCHD debut I had hoped that Panny would leverage it into a prosumer camera to be the HD-DVX. Dream Come true. I am off to NAB to see this.

Anyone know about lens filter thread...72mm 82mm.

Also can avid edit AVC-HD or can you wrap the footage into a DVCPROHD wrapper????

I am extremely excited about this.

"The HMC150 handheld offers 1080i and 720p recording at 13Mbps, comparable to current HDV compression formats with bit rates of 25Mbps. In addition, an enhanced mode with a higher bit rate is planned to be incorporated into the HMC150 for higher-level use."

Higher bitrate as in 20Mbps probobly(speculation, of course)

Wow, Kholi you seem WAY excited about this camera haha. I am too and it does sound incredible. Although, I just bought my XH-A1, I don't think its a waste of money. Like everyone says, you gotta buy what's right for you now. If this comes out and really does blow away the competition, maybe I'll sell my camera and go for this badboy depending on if the market requests it.

Can't wait for more info!

The HMC150 is designed to provide enhanced HD production capabilities for video enthusiasts who desire professional features, extended recording capability and the fast, simple and highly reliable workflow offered by tapeless, solid-state recording. The HMC150 features three native 16:9 progressive 1/3” CCD imagers with an optical image stabilization (O.I.S.) function to ensure stable shooting and a 28mm Leica Dicomar wide-angle zoom lens (35MM equivalent). The HMC150 handheld offers 1080i and 720p recording at 13Mbps, comparable to current HDV compression formats with bit rates of 25Mbps. In addition, an enhanced mode with a higher bit rate is planned to be incorporated into the HMC150 for higher-level use. It supports a full range of HD formats including 1080/60i, 1080/50i, 1080/30p, 1080/25p, 1080/24p native; 720/60p, 720/50p, 720/30p, 720/25p, 720/24p native; and it is 50Hz/59.94Hz switchable.

I'm definitely excited. I've been looking at the EX-1 so hard, but it's just missin' something, I dunno.

This announcement is VERY promising and allows me to just BREATHE for a minute.

the cool thing is Premiere Pro CS3 can already edit AVC-HD ... sort of...

Don't believe it? Pana's got a program to convert AVC-HD to P2 HD.

http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/support/software_downloads.asp

any NLE that supports P2 I suppose ...

So no waiting for the codec to be compatible to be able to edit it!

I've seen that program in action, and it works GREAT!

And it doesn't just convert to DVCPRO/HD .. It converts to MXF! You can use the program to "dump" SD cards to P2 cards (or any other media), converting in the process. So yes, this camera - through the freely available conversion software, is compatible with the entire P2 process.

Well, frankly I'd probably just convert the dalies to ProRes 422 'cause that's just how I roll.
Just be ready with lots of drive space; rewrapping to ProRes is going to mean file sizes that are anywhere from, say, 6 to 20 times larger! That 4GB SD card you shoot on might end up taking 100GB of hard disk space once you convert it to ProRes.

Some NLEs already have native AVC-HD support. Not all do though. Some, like FCP, require you to unwrap and convert the files (big surprise there, right? Sheesh.)

But all NLEs should have native support sooner or later. Until then, Panasonic does have a downloadable utility that'll convert AVC-HD into DVCPRO-HD for editing purposes, and that's available today.

Wow if this all pans out I might finally go tapeless. 20x zoom and sony level lcd sharpness please! Panasonic take everything you've seen and bring home another generation winner.

Thanks guys I forgot about the Pany program to convert to DVCPRO HD.

I don't think this cam does variable frame rates. If pany did that why go HVX?

Gonna be a long wait til NAB, even worse a wait 'til Fall.

I agree... I'm still on a DVX, and I've been waiting for what seems like forever for this release. The A1 intrigued me, but after owning 4-5 canon cams, I promised myself I would never buy another canon again (due to customer support), even if it seems like the best cam on the market.

At least this give's me time to save some money, upgrade my editing system, and sell off the XL2 I still own before it's worth next to nothing.

You know it's promising when Barry starts "ooohing" and "awwing" and using extensive exclamation points in his posts:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG):Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
