New Panasonic Gear Announcements Apr 15

It sounds like Panasonic broadcast is going to stay broadcast. And I don't blame them, either. Tryin to appease filmmakers in our sense is a pain in the ass.

Maybe the lumix department will be taking over that responsibility from now on.

nothing new announced :( wow this sucks Panasonic.
i guess ill be getting an fs700.

Very incremental upgrades. Baby steps for the AF 100, HPX 250/255, AC 130A 160A. These types of small firmware upgrades are free from RED, but Panasonic seems to be charging for the AF 100 and AC 130A / AC 160A updates.

Honestly, the biggest news for AF 100 owners, is that the Convergent Design Nanoflash dropped $1000, so the AF100 is still the best value at the $5,000 price range.

Overall, I'm feeling pretty deflated though.

Or they could just be waiting to develop/release a mature AF200 (or whatever it will be called) that will be more than an incremental upgrade. Maybe by that time it will do micro P2 recording and high frame rates...4k maybe.

They announced a 4K Varicam in development. I don't think that an AF200 is ever going to happen.

Sony has at least two 4K cameras, Canon has two, JVC has one (maybe two), and Panasonic has none. Again, unless you count the nifty but vague 4K mockup and a 4K-some-time-in-the-future announcement (we assumed that already). No new large-sensor camera (I think a lot of people expected a 10-bit/P2 successor to the AF100). A rehash of AVC-Ultra with a few more details. And a promise of new stuff to come next year.

They announced the 4k Varicam - that makes at least one right? I suspect it will price in epic territory.

Wow, they're charging $250 for 1080p60 capability in the AF100! That should be free, since it's in the AVCHD 2.0 spec. For the money they should have updated the camera to 10-bit output and come up with log profiles. Very underwhelming. I suspect Barry Green will disagree.

I believe the 60p capability is a free firmware update, but the turbo focus firmware is hardware based, and that isn't free.

All of the current "new" 4k cameras need external recorders. Not exactly what I want in a 4k camera. I trust Panasonic to do it right with the 4k Varicam with on board recording.

You can overcrank 24p to 60fps in the AF100 already as it is today.
It's not about over cranking. It's about shooting 1080/60p at 60P. Not 60p in a 24p timeline. 60p in a 60p timeline. I would have liked to see a 120fps in 720p though. I'm gonna buy the upgrade and not ***** about it one bit.
Panny is a broadcast company. That is their strength and they do it well.

I think Panasonic is going to drop 4/3" for cinema uses, which is why we're not seeing any large sensor announcement this year. They need time to re-strategize their product line, in order to compete with all the rest. Either they use a Sony S35mm sensor for future products, or they will take the (long) time to develop their own. But AF200. Just my 2 cents on why there's no upgrade this year.

If Panasonic is such a good broadcast camera company, you'd think they'd remember that broadcast cameras sometimes require genlock.

And 3D broadcasts sometimes requires compact cameras that have genlock and some way of synching the lenses.

I guess we're going to have another NAB when the doesn't give any AF100-like solution with genlock. How the heck are we supposed to make good 3D content with their product line?

It's like their camera dept is deliberately trying to kill their 3D TV / projector / blu-ray / video switcher dept. Awesome.

IMO Nothing is free, you already paid for the upgrades when you dropped $20k+ on a Camera set up.

But thats neither here or there.

Hopefully panasonic wakes up and sees that there is still room for them in the $5k-$10k market.

I know, but I only use 50/60fps to do slowmotion and then overcrank works just as good and at a higher bitrate.

I didn't want 4k. I wanted an AF100 with increased DR, better high iso performance, and resolved actual 1080p. Oh well, maybe the used value will drop even more (even with the great price of a new AF100) and maybe I'll pick one up.
