New Panasonic AG HC-X2 (HC-X1/UX180 successor)

You can turn the AI Compensation on or off in the Scene File on my CX350. It is the last two lines of the Scene File menu. You can set a preset number to default to as well as disable it.

I am not sure if you can decouple it from the iris ring when it is engaged.

great, it works. AE level OFF when auto iris. No more unwanted mistakes. Thanks!

No firmware update yet? It's really a pity that broadcast models (CX350...) get updated often whereas prosumer models (HC-X2) are completely neglected... If I've knew that I would probably considered my purchase in favour to the 4-year-old CX350

I know, it's ridiculous right. Still waiting for a firmware update (if one is ever made), and would it fix/add the features necessary? I'm not getting my hopes up anymore, just accepting what the HC-X2 has now and utilising it.

Oh dear lord!!

These firmware updates will support background recording and super slow-motion recording in the MP4 file format, which until now has been limited to MOV. In addition, the updates will enable the use of the face detection/tracking AE&AF function when shooting in manual mode. Users will also be able to assign a button to an additional seven functions: [LOW GAIN], [MID GAIN], [HIGH GAIN], [W.BAL Ach], [W.BAL Bch], [W.BAL PRESET], [PUSH A.IRIS].

No SRT streaming for the moment...

Just as hotchkiss stated there's going to be an update, just saw this on Facebook this morning and now from hotchkiss last response. Happy to see these changes! Can't wait:

Mike, if I remember correctly, you've owned both the DVX200 and now the HC-X2. I have a couple of HC-X2 questions...

1. How do both the VF and monitor compare to the DVX200? Better, worse ?

2. Is the IQ (DR, color, resolution) on the HC-X2 significantly better? Is there any improvement in low light situations?

I'm still rocking a DVX200, albeit in a more limited deployment these days. It gets a lot of use with a NinjaV for green screen work and some corporate b-roll ( less and less) . I'm interested in adding another camcorder for fast moving b-roll situations, press conferences and the like. Curious to hear your thoughts.

Thanks

Yes, by monitor you mean LCD? The screen is definitely better on the HC-X2, but the VF seems the same (has same specs too).

I definitely prefer the colors on the HC-X2, on both my old UX180 and DVX200 I didn't like the color dynamics. Redish/blue green tint like.
In some places it was impossible to fix this as the walls project those tints easier, but outdoors or with white walls it wasn't so bad. The HC-X2 definitely does a better job in my opinion.

In low light I haven't noticed much difference, but I'm sure the DVX200 would do better as the sensor is bigger. For a one inch sensor I'd say the HC-X2 does a decent job.

Just to add on the HC-X2 you can save your camera settings onto the card for backup/firmware updates.

Something that is missing on the HC-X2 is Auto-SW :-(

Any other questions just ask!

Auto-SW is a menu with options that you get to choose which functions become auto when in auto-mode, so for example you can make the audio remain in manual as well as the Iris or/and other settings when you switch to auto-mode. I found it usual to have, but I can work around not having it on the HC-X2. Maybe they'll add it to another firmware update.

Thanks for the response.

I'm deeply bummed to see the pro camcorder segment shrinking into oblivion. More than anything I'd like a "new and improved version" of the DVX200. Since that seems entirely unlikely at this point, as Panasonic seems to be confining themselves to producing an occasional pro-sumer camcorder release and mirrorless systems only, and increasingly FF at that. Consequently, I've been checking out the 1 inch camcorders- CX350, HC-X2 and the Canon XF605. None of them wow me, but I guess they are an improvement over the 1/3 camcorders of yester-year.

At some point I'll rent some of the contenders for evaluation to see how they do. Thanks again for your feedback.
