New Panasonic 4K 60P Camcorder HC-X1000

Will the AC90 Book by Barry Green be a good resource for the HC-X1000? I'd love to get one if it is since I'm not having any luck looking for other resources.

It would serve for many purposes, yes. But not all. Actually the X1000 sits somewhere around halfway between an AC90 and a DVX200; there are many similar design decisions in the DVX200 and X1000, so ... somewhere between those two books would get you most things that you'd want to know...

Alright so I'd try to acquire the AC90 book and the DVX200 one if one ever comes up. Thank you.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to properly setup my scene settings to the look I want, been at it for a few days now.

Hello,

Thought I would share my first wedding film with you, also shot on the HC-X1000 (and a couple GoPro Hero 4 shots):

vimeo.com/nathanbuckfilms/katieanddavid

I shot it using the picture style that was suggested way back in this thread. I graded in post.

Let me hear your thoughts (mostly around footage results but also keen to hear what you think of the film itself ;) )

Oh, I should add: Ceremony and first dance were 4k 50p. The rest was 1080 25. I did shoot the leaving church in 4k 50p too with the shutter speed at 1/100 but in the end I decided not to go slo-mo. The first dance was shot at 1/50. I wanted to do 1/100 but couldn't due to low light. I had my Rotolight Neo mounted for the first dance too.

Have to say I really disliked this camera for a few reasons but your video is proof that its not the tool but the carpenter that makes it really work. I could see some of the flaws I didn't like about the camera, because I'm a picky bastard sometimes, but you work sucked me into paying attention to the story. Well done!

I still think we are a year or two away from a really strong 4K 60P small sensor camcorder with integrated lens

Thanks everyone. I am still not happy with it though. I would be looking to upgrade to a better camera as soon as the cashflow increases.

There are two more wedding videos shot now, you can see them on my Vimeo (vimeo.com/nathanbuckfilms). The one called 'Autumn' I am very unhappy with as I pushed the gain far too high in the ceremony.

The latest wedding 'Toasted Marshmallows' I shot entirely in 4k and dropped onto a 1080 timeline. I kept the gain mostly below 10db, occasionally 12db and this crunched out most of the noise. I still find it lacks that crispness of a larger sensor. It has a very much 'video' feel (hey, I expected that) but I miss the cinematic finish. I really had to work it to get the cinematic feel. Grading wise, it holds up well, but you can't push it too far. Highlights tend to get clipped and the blacks tend to have a nasty green tint.

What scene did you use? I'm concocting my own right now from experience with other scenes.

Where can we buy both books?

Do any of you guys get iris stepping? I noticed this while riding the Iris on a shoot, and it's quite noticeable on the LCD.

Isn't it supposed to be a smooth iris transition?

I believe these were the scene file settings I used for the first video I posted:

Have developed a couple of “rules” — never set the aperture higher than 4.8 (5.2 when absolutely needed) — and use AGC with max set at 9 dB. Now, AGC has bitten me a few times when it changes during a shot, but surprisingly rarely. And I find it far simpler to use AGC when shooting wildlife than messing around with gain because framing and focus are my top priorities and things happen quickly.

I found the following Scene File Settings to work really well (for me) in reducing noise and delivering a pleasing picture with very little color correction needed. And this includes shooting in virtually any conditions (including shooting indoor interviews using two 400W tungsten eqiuv. LEDs):

V DETAIL: -2 (These detail settings are ADDING detail, so -7 is the camera shooting without sharpening)
H DETAIL: -2
DETAIL CORING: 0
CHROMA LEVEL: -2 (Plenty of color from this camera, you can always saturate more in post)
CHROMA PHASE: 0 (More green or more magenta if it suits your taste)
COLOR TEMP A ch: 0
COLOR TEMP B ch: 0
MASTER PEDESTAL: -1 (This is one that makes a pretty big impact, so tune to your own tastes)
AUTO IRIS LEVEL: -2 (I rarely use auto)
DRS: OFF (Even better, assign this to a User button for when you need it)
DRS EFFECT: 1
GAMMA: CINE-LIKE-V (Most people seem to be using HD NORM for the cleanest picture, but this works for me)
KNEE: DISABLED (this is disabled with the CINE gammas)
MATRIX: CINE-LIKE

I’m sure these could be improved upon and any feedback would be appreciated. In fact, I originally asked for feedback on these settings way back in this thread prior to actually trying them. Didn’t get any replies, so went ahead and have been using them ever since with good results. I'm an old dude and so tend to like finding one Scene File that fits a variety of shooting situations versus trying to remember how I've set various Scene Files and what they're each best suited for.

I haven't noticed this, I have done a couple of exposure shifts whilst shooting and never experienced stepping, ususally very smooth. The only step like thing I can think of that looks like stepping is switching between ND filters, but you'd have to be deliberately doing that!

How noisy is the preamps on your cameras with 0db and a silent mic?

I'm using an NTG4+ and a Sennheiser AVX. I'd say the noise is fine. It's nowhere near as bad as that time I was shooting on the AF101. Obviously there is a little noise but nothing Adobe Audition wouldn't sort out. I would use any noise reduction sparingly though.

Could you do a small test for me? Panasonic Philippines is taking their sweet time aquiring a HC-X1000 for testing and comparison.

Point the camera at a single point of bright light, zoom it to Z90 and put it ouf of focus fore or aft then slowly adjust the iris. Or you could zoom it to Z90 and peer inside the lens with a flashlight to see the iris blades moving, and again adjust it slowly. ( not sure how i'd affect the sensor so i'd put in some ND )

I'm also not sure if this is a problem with my unit but the iris ring is not as solid as the focus and zoom, you can feel it nudge when you got fore and aft, and you can feel it compress when you squeeze on it.

Other than that I don't really have any other problems with the camera. Oh! There was this one shoot since the repair that it completely lost focus and went to macro focus while tracking a model... was using AF for the convenience but I don't see any reason for it to loose focus.

EDIT: Have any of you guys used the WI-FI Function? I've paired it with the app but the next time I start WI-FI the app won't pair! It's not automatically broadcasting it's SSID when you start WI-FI. I start it with a user button on the screen.

The only reason I want to use the WI-FI/app is to manually control it when I'm recording something non-important and it's setup on a tripod alone.

Sure, if I get time tonight I'll have a go for you!

I've used the Wi-Fi app before but I recall it being very fiddly and in the end I just stopped bothering (I didn't really need it anyway). I think I found it easier to do it using the QR code method, perhaps give that a try?
