New Panasonic 4K 60P Camcorder HC-X1000

There is definitely a place for this camera. I could find many shoots where the X1000 would be a perfect fit. I was interested in this camera when it first came out, and the more I research it, the more I like it. A 4k, 60P camera, three lens rings, XLRs, huge zoom range, all in a compact, little body. The price is nice, too.

Don't forget.....built-in ND as well. That along with all other things mentioned makes it quite a significant package. For an event cam (and a 4K one at that) this will be quite a versatile unit.

Is there an external microphone mount I'm not seeing?

Yes. Look to the left of the eye cup in this picture:

If I had to choose between cameras, the X1000's closest competitor is the Sony X70. The X1000 is already a better choice than the Sony AX1, although they're similar. The AX1 is larger, costs $1,000 more and uses more expensive XQD cards, but doesn't offer any real advantage over the X1000. Unless you just prefer the Sony look.
But comparing the X70 to the X1000, both have 4K (eventually on the X70), dual SD cards and 3 ND filters.

The X70 offers:
Larger sensor.
True broadcast codec.
SDI out.
Very compact size, more stealthy.
Cheaper, but we'll wait to see what the 4K upgrade will cost.

The X1000 has:
Larger, more "pro" size (it matters to some clients).
3-ring lens controls.
More Pro camera controls.
Longer zoom range.

As a camera op, I prefer the X1000. Its control layout is more "broadcast" friendly. But as for value for the money, the X70 looks hard to beat. The larger sensor, codec and SDI out are huge advantages.
Tough call.

But the clearzoom works extremely well on the x70 (at least it does on the AX100 I have)

Just got mine this week. Still experimenting with it. But since I do mostly tripod shots, I've put together my rig, so thought I'd share some pics;

The above shots show various stages of my setup. Obviously, I wouldn't have all of this mounted for run and gun shots.

Here's what I've learned so far:
Camera really needs the U3 SD cards with Write speeds of 90 mbps in order to take advantage of the 4K.
Outputting a 4K signal to this particular HDMI monitor doesn't work....the monitor won't show any image at all, at least, the way I had it set. The monitor works fine for all other settings except 4K capturing.
Low light is so so. Seems awfully grainy in low light with anything above 6db gain. Again, I'm still playing with it.

Final Cut Pro X on my Mac desktp (2008) and 24GB is acceptably quick, even with 4K footage. Output files can get large quickly, though.

Thanks for the pics. Did it ship with SD cards? I'm sure I read somewhere that they did.

Someone please explain the recording formats to me.
MP4, MOV and AVCHD. I've used AVCHD and am pretty familiar with its pros/cons. What is the best/worst of the formats, and what are the best uses for each?

B&H and Adorama include a 64gb card.

Wrong. Adorama still includes the card, but the B&H site specifically states "Recording media is not included."

B&H did offer the card as a pre-order deal, but not since the camera has been in stock. You can, however, request a price match from B&H. I called them and they're sending me the card (no charge) after purchase.

Wrong - me? I don't think so!
Here's the direct link to the B&H website. Notice it says "Includes FREE Panasonic 64GB Gold Series UHS-I SDXC Memory card (U3) $123.36 Value."

I know it also states no recording media, but the ad clearly says it does, so they have to honor it. If there's a discrepancy, I'm sure they'll include a card.

My apologies. I stand corrected. They must have just reinstated that deal because when I ordered mine it was no longer a part of their package and I had to call and request the price match to get it. I even rechecked the site early this morning prior to telling you were "wrong" -- either it wasn't there then or I simply missed it sitting so damn boldly right up there in the header. (smile)

So your flawless record remains intact and I'll definitely know better next time before accusing you of being in error. :)
