New P2 Log software for Macintosh users

Thanks a lot for you help Mark. I sussed it out but made an error by removing a codec from Quicktime as advised earlier. Just put it back and it all works just fine now.

I will have a play around with it all after the football and if it works fine I will buy a copy.

Cheers again.
Steve

PS thanks to the others as well!

Could P2Log flip the image at same time it's importing the material?
I've got M2 adapter an it would be really nice!
Thanks!

I can view perfectly the image in the timeline FCP when I import a 72025p generate in P2Log, but when I apply several effects/filters (not all) I can see macroblocks when i render the image. I've made a new sequence like it's said and put the HDVCPROHDvideoouputcodec in another folder.
Is it normal? I've to resign don't use several filters I love it? Or I'm doing something wrong?
Thanks ;)

Steve, thats a very good find. I hadn't fully thought this through, but what happens is that that component effects the way P2 Log displays the image, so when you remove it P2 Log is OK, but FCP is not. Like you say putting it back in solves the garbled preview image.

Imagine say there is nothing they can do about this, so I guess the option is to just deal with the garbled image in P2 Log, but know that FCP (most important) will be OK.

Nice find. By the way wanted to thank you for the hard mount M2 setup image you posted, my M2 is on the way and I have got all the various rings ready to do just the same. I was never convinced with the soft rubber connector idea.

I asked Imagine for this also, but they said they were unlikely to add more 'advanced' features to P2 Log. I take that to mean they have little intention of adding much more to P2 Log, but HD Log may get this.

What's strange with this codec issue is that the temp reference Quicktime's created by P2 Log when you open a P2 Volume play garbled in P2 Log with the component left in, but if you open those Quicktime files in QT Player they play fine - this suggest that actually Imagine could easily do something about this as their Player inside P2 Log just needs to be a simple QT window.

NO problem. In fact someone else, Jeff Lanctot, asked if it was possible to remove the 15mm rods and screw everything together, then put the rods back in afterwards. And it works perfectly and is better than screwing the thread all the way in then back out halfway to join everything up.

Sounds good!

I bought P2 Log a few days ago and have been trying without success just to install it on my brand-new MacBook Pro (the online activation keeps failing). Unfortunately the support staff have not been very supportive so I may be forced to ask for a refund. I hope they'll prove me wrong and get on the ball soon, though.

Are you up and running yet Chris? We had a couple issues with the registration server, once that got resolved another nastier problem arose...OSX10.4.7. Previous OS register fine, 4.7 blocks the encryption processes. We're scrambling to find a work around, or <gasp>a hint from Apple what they've hosed, so please be patient.

If you have the option to roll back to 4.6 or use P2Log on a different computer that's all we can suggest today.

Are you having success with 50pn footage playing back at 25? I spoke to someone who said I have to conform all the off speed footage via cinema tools, but he didn't seem very up on the process.

I'm directing a Music clip and was planing to shoot most if not all of it at 50 but if it's a pain I'll do it in post....

Hi Toby,

I've been trying to get official confirmation on how this works, but nothing concrete yet. From my experience I have found that P2 Log will remove anything with 2:2 pulldown i.e. 720p25 shot material.

When it comes to shooting 720p25 overcranked to say 50fps, P2 Log does nothing with this, its just creates a 50fps Quicktime clip and as your friend suggested, you need to run it through Cinema Tools to get a 25fps clip.

I have not tried any pN footage as I use a Firestore.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the info. It's all a bit scary as we aren't going to get a chance to test it before the shoot... But I assume it will be fine.

Toby

All was straightened out on my previous posting about problems installing P2 Log. It had to do with the latest OSX build breaking something in P2 Log. Everything is working now.

Hi Toby,

We have been doing a fair bit of testing with our new HVX202EN, shooting 720p25PN and capturing it without issue. Our workflow was shooting on the camera and dumping the cards to a FireWire drive via a Powerbook. (We are only running 2 x 4GB Cards) We are then using P2 Log to import, convert and rename the footage prior to bringing it into FCP for cutting.

We have been able to do this successfully without any of the garbling issue.

Cheers

Hi Alister,

Good to hear. You're doing exactly what I'll be doing.

Have you shot any off speed clips (50fps)

Cheers,

Toby

PS Good to see you've left AAV

If I get a chance this morning, I will shoot a bit of 50fps and have a play. This is something I was keen to mess with anyway.

Cheers,

Alister
- and yes, it is good to be out in the sunshine again...

I'm retarded and a new HVX 200 user. I get my camera in two days. I will most likely get a firestore with it instead of P2 cards. Will I need a P2 viewer to keep all my video files on my Mac? What do you use with a HVX and just a mac to view and organize P2 files?

I just ordered a HVX 200. Will I need a P2 viewer of some sort? How do I view and organize P2 video files from a Firestore out of the box?

Third Edit :
Ok, I have got it figured out now. I did some testing over lunch. I set the camera to 720p25pn instead of 720p50.

I shot in the following modes :
12FRAME
18FRAME
20FRAME
23FRAME
25FRAME
27FRAME
30FRAME
32FRAME
37FRAME
48FRAME
50FRAME

I only bothered shooting a few seconds in each mode. More of a proof of concept.
A couple of things that i noticed :
- because I was in PN mode, it only captured the frames I needed. (At 12FRAME, the camera indicated I had 37 minutes of record time across two 4GB Cards. 50FRAME = 6minutes).
- I was able to record all of the different formats onto the one card
- I was able to import all of the footage without having to identify different frame rate shots.

I imported using P2 Log. P2 Log identified all of the clips as DVCPRO HD 720p25, 25fps. In a sense, it automatically did the FRC as part of the import. This meant that I was able to dump the clips in the timeline, and that the 12FRAME clips ran fast, and the 50FRAME clips ran slow. FCP did not complain about weird timecode, and the footage looked great.

and now I am really starting to like the idea of P2 over Varicam.......

Sooooo, forget the last few longwinded posts, shoot in 25pn, and get P2 Log to handle the rest.

Cheers

Alister
