I just received a post from Spec-Comm on twitter and this is what it said...

"Speccomm -Great news. New P2 cards and new pricing by about 50%! They are limited life. If you fill them up once a day then they will last 5 years ..."

Would anyone know any details on these new P2 cards?

Lots of details in my "live from NAB" post. And 50% is way conservative... they're a lot cheaper than that. The 16GB is $420 (down from $900), the 32GB is $625 (down from $1650) and the 64GB is "under $1000" (down from $2600). So a lot more than half off.

im just wondering what kind of drives we are gonna need for the increased transfer speeds. will firewire 800 single drives be good, or will we need a RAID

this is freaking huge - amazing - one of the biggest obstacles that people cite to the technology is the price - way to go panny

I don't really think this is the way Panny should go. I think it's a rescue mission without the faith of providing a SD-Card/P2 Adapter.

All other vendors use simple and cheap SD cards - only Panny goes another way. That makes me really sad. Please watch the JVC webcast from NAB. They had a guy that compared the prices for shooting with Panny/JVC cameras. That is a really big selling point!

I'll buy a 16Gig SD Card for 30$ and shoot with it. Then I'll give it to the editor for further use and postproduction. If I never see it again it's fine - because I only paid 30$ for it. I can even put this SD card in a box and place it on the shelve for archieving. It's not possible with P2!

So please Panny - go and have some faith in your customers and provide a P2/SD Adapter. That would be a huge selling point. Of course you wouldn't sell anymore P2 cards, that are totally overpriced for what they do. Even the new ones.

Sorry - I love my HPX502 and I even have a 2700 but the P2 thing drives me mad when I see all the other vendors going straight to cheap SD card.

Cheers

that doesnt make sense - panny is now going to beat the "cheap" sd cards that RED uses and the cards have more functionality built in with faster data rates

if you are going to compare Panasonic I frame DVCPro100 on P2 cards to JVC Long Gop on SD cards then you have NO argument.

You can't record DVCProHD, much less DVCProHD AVC-Intra to SD cards.

Really.

If, after this price drop, which is phenomenal, people are STILL bitching about P2 card prices, then DON'T BUY IT!

Sorry - you are wrong.

The recent SD cards can handle Data Rates that exeed the DVCProHD100 amount. Of course they don't have a raid system inside - but who cares?
Even if you count 8x4GBSD card inside a P2 card and add some bucks for the controler, the price for the card is not justified.

That is my opinion - of course there are a lot of panny lovers out here (I'm one of these) but I don't switch out my business thinking.

Who ever said that? Please read my post for what I've said.

This issue has been beaten to death on these boards. If you still don't know the difference between P2's prices and SD memory prices or feel that you're being 'cheated' then just get a HMC150 and be happy. That's what Panasonic made them for so to say they're going 'the other way' is completely wrong.

That's probably the only selling point JVC has....in a real world companies stupid enough to only offer quicktime files of the cards won't get a as much as though from me.

Hey Mr. jrmiller,

I don't think it is the right place or the right time to offend me. I actually own about 40 P2 cards. And as I mentioned before I'm shooting with the 502 and the 2700. I also stated that I'm a real Panasonic fan (I owned a SDX900 before). So I don't think you should comment so fancied. I didn't offend you so I think I have the right to be treated well.

I earn my money with the gear and I'm really happy with it. Just the recent announcement for the "new" P2 cards made me laugh out loud because Panny says nothing else as "OK - we have to do something to be compatitive to our competitores. Let's do something - and hey - now you can see that we can drop prices by 50% because we sold the cards for a long time for 50% more then they are worth (actually more then 50% but let's forget about this).

I cannot really trust a company anymore that sells me a card for 100% and then two weeks later offers the same card for 50% of the price. All

Yes I know - it's not the same card. It's a limited life card...
If you believe that you also still believe in Santa Claus. Panasonic had to find a reason for the price-dumping. That's all. But is so obvious.

Believe it or not - I still like the P2 workflow but I don't think that P2 is the future as ALL OTHER VENDORS go with SD cards. And the thing with the 50% P2 cards is another argument for professional users not to go with it. Because every customer has lost half of it's investment in P2 cards with this announcement. If you have a serious business you would be aware of a company that does this. Anyway - I will keep shooting with P2 for a long time but I can't really understand the product strategy of Panny.

And to make things very clear here: I DON'T MEAN THAT JVC MAKES GOOD CAMERAS THAT IS NOT THE POINT! The discussion is about THE MEDIA THAT THE CAMERA RECORDS to. I knew that some guys would turn the discussion to the "camera" thing. But the point is the MEDIA not the camera.

I agree with you totally. I love my HPX500 but when it comes to the P2 card and its price tag, even at $600 a pop, man...that's still a lot of money for the smaller production guys like the rest of us. I'm looking for the day when I can have enough cards to shoot on remote Thailand villages for 4 or 5 days without having to worry about the laptop and all the other gears you have to tag along just to be able to transfer the footages so you can continue shooting. Therefore, an SD card adaptor would be awesome and I'll be the first in line to get it and do a few kung fu flips to show that I'm happy....the day has arrived.

I didn't mean to offend you, pro studio, but how can you argue that panasonic is going the other way when they do cater to the market who wants SD cards? Yes, it isn't dvcpro but the option is out there for those who want it.

What they are "worth" is what the market will bear. No more, and no less.

Make something with the same features and sell them for less. I'm sure that there is a lot of Euros in it for you.

What they are "worth" is what the market will bear. No more, and no less.

That is exactly the problem because we have no choice with P2. We can only use what Panny will offer us. Or stay away from P2.

@jrmiller
OK - no problem. You are absolutely right. The HMC is made for SD cards but it hasn't the features of the HPX line and not the codecs. Technically it would be no problem today to record full DVCProHD (and even AVCIntra) onto an SD card. Remember: P2 was invented around 2003 where only CF cards were available with horrible transfer rates. But time has changed and transfer rates too.

The only thing im mad at is that Panny dropped the prices for P2 cards by half. That means they still earn a lot of money even if they are 50% off the regular price. That means that they were at least 100% overpriced.

Haaaa, I used to buy BetaSP 30 tapes at $22.00. Then, later, I could buy them for $10.00. So, am I complaining? No, manufacturing, etc. made these first batch of Beta tapes more expensive to produce. Memory and P2 went the same way. Look at prices from 2 or 3 years ago. All memory is down in price. This is good for everyone.

Without knowing what they cost for R&D, marketing, development and manufacturing, etc. you are just pulling numbers out of your behind.

IF they were "overpriced", then NO ONE would buy them.

THAT is the definition of "overpriced".

God forbid a company makes a PROFIT on something they SELL!

I swear Panasonic can't win. People ***** about P2 prices, so they come out with new ones that are cheaper and some people STILL *****.

Unbelievable.

Hey Mr. jrmiller,

With all respects, how do 2004 (or 2003) and up until today in 2008/9 turn into two weeks?

I see the frustration for those who made large investment in P2 in the past and feel that the cards just dropped 50% in value. But with 40 P2 cards and a hpx500/2700 won't a large part of those cards already be paid for by work done up until today?

When a company lowers prices or introduce a cheaper version there will be some casualties, but that's not unique with pana. Avid done it on several occasions and so will other large companies continue to do.

A real punch in the face would be if pana just, "we're dropping P2 in favour of sd cards", keeping with the current form factor will protect the investments of clients regardless of P2 pricing.
