Wow... I haven't been on DVX user forever! Haven't used the DVX in while I got to say tho... have a new toy now... The Nikon is pretty good! This is a music video I just completed for blues, rock, country singer Diablo Dimes. It was a real quick and fun shoot. Hope you like it!

Thanks, the man behind the camera was my good friend Kevin Joelson: http://kevinjoelson.net/

We both got the d90 (stereo 3d shoot some day?) and I think it makes for a great cinematic camera. Everything sort of falls apart in wide shots, but when used tighter up it looks really good. Love the depth of field, dynamic range, and the true colors.

We bought a nice camera mount: http://www.filmtools.com/filiuncamofo.html
Other than that we shot all tracking shots from the bed of a truck.
Some hand held shots, it's important to make the camera heavier (otherwise the D90 with its rolling shutter will wiggle), so we were using the high hat while holding the camera.

Post production was all done in final cut. Used the 3 way color corrector, blending modes, some blurs, some film grain, and some other experimental tricks...

Then added layers of real film grain, a film flicker composition, film burns, scratches, etc... my work flow was sort of convoluted on this one. I could have just gone in AE or Color, but I like pushing the limits of FCP.

Some still I pulled off the video:

Nice job. I like the shots at the end when you see the two images of the guy and it is swaying back and forth with the music.

I'd like to see it without all the scratches and stuff. Maybe just in B &W. But this does look good.

That was right up the D90's alley, gritty, dirty, filmy & not trying to be crazy high resolution. Perfect application for this camera. Good job.

Yeah the high resolution pretty much went out the door with this one.... :)
I'm all about the clean look but I personally think that with the D90 you have to be in a controlled environment and shoot mostly close-ups. Run and gun outdoors it's gonna get rough, hence why I went the gritty route.

I think you took the "flaws" and or limitations of the d90 and really made them work for you here in this video... Did you composite an old film stock over top to get that gritty filmic effect? Looks great, the lighting is nice too, good stuff!

Thanks! Yes indeed I used a combination of film elements, layered and blended in FCP.

so we were using the high hat while holding the camera.

franck,

in my musicians world a " high hat" is a part of a drum set.
I´m pretty sure you didn´t use that for stabilizing the D90 ;-)

So what´s a high hat?

Great video, great song!

A High Hat is used to mount a fluid head on this low board set up in order to use it on the ground. This is not our high hat...i found this image on the web. They are easy to build and always come in handy.
