New multi-format F3 adaptor from Allstar!

F3 already has a quick change mount system. Why do you need another quick change mount on top of the original quick change mount(F3)?
The F3 was designed with multiple adapters in mind- not another neutral mounting system...
I suppose it will be a cheaper option for those that already have this (Allstar) system for RedOne.
Great system BTW just not very suitable for F3-more for cameras that need tools for switching adapters.

It looks like you are at $600 for the mount setup and then $180 for each lens.
That comes out to about $6k to adapt my lens kit.
When I brought up this fact on Reduser it was suggested to only purchase one lens adapter per lens mount type, which defeats the point of a quick change adapter.
Also unless something has changed since I looked at this setup for the Red, there are no rear lens caps for the custom A-mounts on each lens. Which means the rear element of each lens rides unprotected. One other thing, depending on the lens being adapted, aperture ring access can be limited by the extended mounting flange.

I also dont really see the point of this for the F3... theres already tons of adapters out there for all different types of lenses for the F3 at much cheaper rates... And its already a multi-mount camera... not really sure who would benefit from this, considering anyone who owned this for their RED One would most likely still own their RED One or gone the way of the MX or Epic... not likely they'd go down to a 1080p camera... its too much $$ considering what the others are going for online if you ask me.

you'd be surprised how many red owners bought f3's on the side...

For us C/Y Contax users, it's the only adaptor solution I know of for the F3. It's not a big deal as I am committing to Nikon glass, but it's good for the F3 nonetheless.

To be fair to AllStar, it's not just about being able to attach a lens. The A-mount system means that the lenses are rock-solid, not wiggling in the mount as the stills lenses pretty much all do in most mount adapters. It also means that one can have lenses made in a variety of mount, including PL, and interchange between them without ever swapping out a mount or worrying about flange depth. And it is all stainless steel, not soft sluminum.

I also believe that every A-mount lens adapter comes with a plastic rear lens cap.

When one puts the new mount adapter back on each lens, the old soft aluminum is replaced by solid stainless steel. Swapping between lenses of different formats means only changing the lenses, not changing lenses and adapter mounts. There is less chance for shift, fewer surfaces to get built up with dirt over time, fewer places for slippage. It is a more solid system. It is also faster to use n set, which is an added benefit.

Jacek, I don't know if you plan a competing product or not. But if you do it would behoove you to state so for matters of propriety. Not accusing you of anything either way. If anything it is to prevent others from claiming you have an axe to grind.

Funny, when I first met Mike Tapa in person at this year's NAB, one of the first things he said was an apologetic "I'm just one guy." He's churning them out as fast as he can. I believe we'll see some more soon. There was a huge shipment last week, and they all went right out to fulfill backorders.

Only problem I see once you have a dedicated mount with the adapter staying kind of permanently on the lens is that you cant switch camera that easily , I am not sure if I belong to a minority but I plan to use my 5 DmkII and 7D along with the Sony F3 ( once it become available ) then changing your Nikon or Leica lenses might be an issue, still waiting for a solution ala Cieico 7 though

Mitch I don't plan on (redundant) neutral mount system for F3 since it already has one:happy:
I can't really talk about what I do since I'm not a sponsor.
But you know me better than that- why can't we just stick to the technical/engineering discussion and leave the "axe grinding" out of it for once. Do you think that only because I make mount adapters I can't express my opinion and ask questions about what other options are? Maybe I can't - I don't know.. but I think that the 25 year experience makes me exceptionally well qualified to do that. I understand these things better than most here and I'm trying to share my thoughts and comments. From some responses I gather that the posters have very limited understanding of the lens mounting so there is a need for explanation.
But I digress.....
Maybe forums aren't the best place for education as opposed to marketing hype....
I apologize to anyone that feels offended in any way...
I meant no harm only raised strictly technical issue...:engel017:

Jacek, I do know you better than that, which is why I wrote what I did. I was trying to give you a chance to fend off such an attack by others.

Would love to see a competing product to the Birger mount from more manufacturers for the F3, particularly a smart EF mount which can activate the OIS and the aperture... This is, I believe, something with huge demand...

Hi, David, you have some misconstruction on A-moumt system. You can get the highest working efficiency if you put adapters on all of your still camera lenses during shooting, but you don`t have to put adapters on all of your own lenses. Maybe you have thirty Nikon lenses, but I don`t think you will take all of them in a production, even you will, you must have assistants with you, swapping the adapter is very easy. I really don`t think you have to spend $6K on A-mount system, only when you need over 4 sets of A-mount system for four cameras.
Each adapter comes with a rear cap, all kinds of adapters have the same rear cap.
Aperture ring has no limit on Allstar universal mount, the adatper dosen`t interfere with the aperture ring.

I think I have to explain my product. Maybe some people think that is a expensive system, I have to let you know, the price is very low for such kind of manufacture. We have to control tolerance to the smallest of millimeters, and use solid metal. That is the reason the mount was made of stainless steel, even though we know that made of aluminum could save half of cost and time.
And talking about the function, most of people will think that F3 dosen`t like RED, we can change the mount very easily, but swapping different types of mounts is JUST one of the functions of A-mount. The most difference between A-mount system and other mount is the way of attaching still camera lens.
Still camera lens is designed for photograph not for cinema, It needs a quickly mounting device, easy to lock and release. It has very small bayonets and locking by springs and a pin, and maybe the factories want save cost, it mostly made by soft metal casting then electrodeposited platings of nickel, so it isn't solid enough, get the gap and easy to wear. If you have DSLR, you can try to hold body and turn, pull the lens hardly, you might find the play, and the gap between mount and lens. Some people will say, I got a very precision mount it was very tight, the lens dosen`t have any play. I`m sorry, tighter and frequency lock and release will accelerate wear.
In order to improve this issue, I design the adapter for still camera lens, it is a stupid way beacuse that will result in increasing the cost, and then A-mount can`t be popular. I don`t think any company will want to produce this troublesome design, it can`t make money, but I`m not a business man, I just use a cinematographer's viewpoint to design, not making money.
And because of these adapters, it can protect your back lenses, and it let different cameras have same back focus length, same mount and same rear cap. It can also let your lenses and mount attached firmly, without play and wear. You can also change the direction of the lenses, like use PL mount lenses.
What do you pay for A-mount? you pay for the precision and working efficiency.
It likes someone just need a screw driver to work, but if you have to use it offten, why not get a screw gun to increase your working efficiency.
Unlike most of mounts were designed for nowadays camera , A-mount system was designed for over-30-years working, besides making by solid metal, it has changeable mount base. Whatever camera will be available in the future, if it has less than 42mm back focus lengh, A-mount system could be worked with it by changing mount base. How much dose it cost? A precision manufacturing stainless steel just be priced under $300, then you can continue using A-mount and all adapters.

Please feel free to asking any question.
Tom
