EVA1: New Master Information Thread for the EVA1

Also I saw some odd bug in the Open Iris FA function in the demo camera at B&H today with a Zeiss CP lens attached... The camera seemed to be stuck in some dark mode despite all the settings being normal (ND, iris, shutter, ISO). I managed to get a normal looking image only by pressing a button that turned out to be mapped to Open Iris FA, but it would only fix it for a few seconds, which I understand to be the correct functioning of OPEN IRIS FA. Of course restarting the camera seemed to get the image back to normal but I wonder what got it stuck in a super dark mode in the first place.

Also what's the deal with side grips? So the wiggle and clicking is deemed normal intended behavior?

Also I had some tail lights and red to better test primary color highlights better, and was disappointed in how the scene file gamma curves compared to Vlog->V709. I don't suppose there is any way to get the right kind of desaturation of bright reds and other primaries with scene files is there? Would hate to think shooting baked looks means compromising highlights... If I want that I'll just stick with my much less expensive FS5. I believe the FS7 and C200/300 have ways around such highlight issues.
Please report bugs to Panasonic support. I am unaware of this issue.

The handgrip replacement addresses the rotation slipping and in so doing improves the wiggle. This play is greatly reduced.

You can easily adjust the Scene Files to your liking in the camera menus. There is a great deal of control and adjustment available so you should be able to address this question. Such settings can be saved to an SD card for future use or sharing with other cameras.

Mitch, what is the expectation on media costs for the EVA1?

v90 sd cards are exorbitantly priced (more than I expected) - a 128gb v90 sd card from Panasonic is running $499 on BHPhoto. I would have expected maybe $250 for a 256gb v90 around launch, dropping to $200 by Q1 2018. Delkin is much more reasonable @ $200 for 128gb, but that's still pretty steep for "low cost media".

It's pushing me a bit towards an Atomos Shogun solution where I can get 512gb Samsung PRO ssds for $200-$250 each. But I would really like the option of keeping things light and streamlined with SD cards, (employing shogun only when needed or when in a more controlled environment), if the v90 SD card price projections are headed downward in the near term.

You dont need panasonic brand v90s. You could even get v60s and be ok. Angelbird. Sandisk is coming out wih some options. I dont trust delkin. An external recorder is another $2000 to spend and defeats the purpose of eva1 being small and light.

And dont buy stuff thinking about what it might be later on. Buy now based on now.

Yeah, $500 for 128gb SD card is certainly not cheap affordable media. CFast2 cards are cheaper than that, faster, and more reliable.

No one said you have to use Panasonic cards. And you need V60 only for the upcoming All-I 200 & 400 Mbps formats. For the current LongGOP 150 only V30 is required.

I received my EVA-1 last week, just in time to play with it over the Thanksgiving Holiday! I am very thankful to Mitch for being the communication conduit between the company and us end users. I feel he has done a great job through all the turmoil of "birthing" this new baby. I have dug through and test practised most of the camera settings now. The menus are a little different than many cameras, but very well suited to customization. It is very well built, and well thought out for the indie/documentary/corporate video producer. I use it along side 2, Panny GH5s and find it to be a great companion for all the Canon and Sigma glass I already have. If you keep in mind the price point it is serving, and the market niche it is filling, I feel it is a truly excellent camera. Once setup, you can really just turn it on and begin shooting. Thanks Panasonic, you have another winner!

My EVA1 + Milvus lens set arrives Friday. It's a busy month but I look forward to playing around and running my own tests!

Is there a histogram? I don't see this in the menus, or the manual.

I know many consider waveform superior, but without getting into that old chestnut, I am surprised that there is a WFM and Vectorscope but no histogram. Even the GH5 has a histogram. What gives?

Sorry, no histogram. I do not believe any Panasonic Pro camera has ever had one. GH5 comes from a still photo background, where histograms are more commonplace.

Mitch, I have a handful of other question/grievances and hoping I am wrong on some of them:

- 1920x1080 is limited to LongGOP 422 50m? This is bogus to me and borders on infurariating. It's a worse internal codec than GH5, and it's the mode where VFR modes are used and the extra bitrate would be very needed. It's a step backwards from a $2000 camera.

- No way to have both VFR and shutter controllable on camera body wheel? There is a user switch for the rolling dial, and it can be set to VFR (great) or shutter (great) but the problem is these are both highly desirable features to have quickly accessible. And I have to choose between one or the other?

- No Zebra % display on the LCD. I can set Zebra1, Zebra2. But no reminder as to what each Zebra is or which one I am on, either immediately upon switch, or permanently on LCD? Also, when I bind the zebra on/off to a user button, it does not appear to be toggling between zeb1/zeb2/off? Only zeb on/off? (I could be mistaken on the later part?).

- Unable to bind a user button to BASE ISO swap between 800/2500. Seriously? So, I can set to run on Base800 and then user the wheel to jump up and down in ISO here. And then I can pop back into the menu to change to Base 2500, and use the wheel. Or I can make the swap locked between Base 800-Base 2500 only. Fine. But what I need most is a quick user button to bind to base 800, or base 2500, and then the wheel to toggle settings in between these. But I can't set any user button to change BASE? Not only that, when I jump to the Varicam HOME screen and tap the Base 800 it takes me to another screen to cycle ISO within the same base, and I can't even change there? I have to call up the menu and drill in?

- Increments to shutter and VFR have to be manually added to presets to scroll through. I don't mind this usually, but there should be an option to "freescroll". Here is the reason. Take shutter. So, I bind my user switch to shutter, and now I can use the wheel and rotate through shutters... 144, 172, 180, 247, etc. Cool. Anything I want to add, is a laborious process in the menu to add custom values (174, 175, 176, 177, 178, 179). But, I do like that I can customize this as often you don't need all of that. However there needs to be a free flowing synchro scan option because often with flickering lights and slow motion settings, or various electronics, you need a very quick way to just cycle through to get rid of flicker, and as of now if I am on set I have to go into the menu and start fiddling and adding presets. And once I do that, now my "cleaner" settings of "144, 172, 180, 247" are ruined and I have messy menu. So I like keeping the current system (main presets with option to add) plus a free-flowing syncho scan option so if I am using the wheel on the camera body I can get any shutter setting, immediately. Same would be nice for VFR as an option, though shutter is critical, VFR is a nicety. With shutter it's very difficult to just lock a common setting if you are using various FPS settings under various lighting settings.

- Everytime I changes sensors mode and come back to S35/4k in system settings, it defaults back to 420 100. This is annoying as during quick swaps to different modes (ie HD for VFR, back to 4K) it needs to remember my last setting, not make me reset my codec everytime. Or at a minimum, default to the 422 codec because I don't know many EVA1 users who will ever prefer defaulting to 8bit 420...

Suggestions:

- LongGOP 422 150, or at least 100, should be available in 1080p HD (this is crazy).
- Base ISO 800/2500 toggle should be bindable to a user button
- User button 9 on the grip should have a "press and hold" modifier option that could change the function of the iris dial to either shutter, vfr, or ISO
- Syncho Scan shutter option for flickering lights and monitors, without having to "corrupt" my presets to add a ton, and drill way into menus to adjust
- Zebra information on LCD should show, an option for both a permanent overlay of percentage + zebra setting (1, 2) and/or on button tap as you rotate through "zebra 1 80%, zebra 2 100%, zebra off".
- HOME screen should be able to tap on Base ISO to change there

............

I also have a list of other suggestions growing, but to me these are must-haves that I would consider "fixes", not "feature requests".

Sorry if this comes off overly harsh, and I understand the camera is brand new. As an early adopter, I'm happy to be part of the process but one concern would be: are these things you agree with and that are feasible to implement on an updated firmware? They seem simple and reasonable enough to me, and as a target user who values the nimble lightweight/small size (ie high speed) nature of the camera some of these are very difficult to swallow if they are considered unimportant, low priority, or unfeasible.

Thank you much for the input and your presence here!

Hello:

I apologize if this has been covered somewhere else, but I couldn't find it (you can't search the forum using the word "RAW", because it's too short).

I'd like to know more about the characteristics of the upcoming RAW mode, specifically: how many bits will it be? 16 or 12? And also, will it be linear or log-encoded (like ARRIRAW)?

We are preparing to purchase a new camera for our production company, and we are doubting between the Sony FS7 and the EVA1. One of the few weaknesses we found on the FS7, on paper, was its limited RAW mode, so I'd like to know how does the Panasonic stack up in that regard.

Thanks.

EVA1's raw will be uncompressed and more hefty! sony's raw is linear, a little 'less' information. Panasonic will do their best to push for 12bit raw, i believe it will be 24,25, 30p 12bit and 10bit raw for 60p, you can ask mitch sometime in january/feb, i believe more info will be available then!

Here's the info I can state at this time:
5.7K uncompressed log-encoded RAW from 24p-30p
4K uncompressed log-encoded RAW from 24p-60p
At least 10-bit, which I contend holds more useful info than 12-bit linear-encoded.

Thanks a lot for your answer. I agree that 12-bit linear is a bit meh, and I'm glad to hear that in your case it will be log-encoded.

I just thought of another question. If the sensor is 5.7K, when you record 4K RAW, does it still use the entire sensor, or does it crop?
