New Isco DSLR anamorphic adapter

That footage looks great, can you tell us what you did to achieve that look?

Thanks artforme. I just played around with exposure and a color gradient - a light effect for the flares. Of course the latter aren´t that nice as with an original anamorphic lens: http://www.vimeo.com/5482514. But i suppose if you invest a bit more time + effort than i did perhaps one can fake the look about 60-80%?

You can fake the oval bokeh too with an oval mask in front of your lens. It has to be large enough to not vignette but smaller than your aperture to shape the bokeh, so it usually only works at around f/2 or less. There are also optical filters that do the horizontal flare. Great fun and while not the real thing it certainly beats post.

I´ve also found a good thread on cinema5d:

Uwe,

You're forgetting mine, capisci ?! :)

Greetings from south,

Emanuel :-)

PS: I envy you. Dom is ending this week and I am here with 40º (degrees) over my shoulders. I will shoot Hamburg* in Iscorama anamorphics between 2009 and 2010. Count on your support there! LOL

Ah..ok - did you give it a go? Something online?

Oh sorry... si, capito :-). It´s all interesting...

What kind of of film you´re going to shoot with the anamorphics here in hamburg?

You´re well informed - yes "Dom" is ending. But concerning the temperature we had some very hot days this week too - about 35° C (95° F). After some heavy thunder storms today will be fine... sunny, blue sky and 25°C...

Greetings from the north

Typical arthouse on the edge between doc and fiction in episodes ala italiana -- two short stories are german and one is placed in Hamburg. It will be a 1st experience in-camera aside a few well succeed experiments I hope to extend in the future. Your town is well rated to my eyes. Several locations in the same town. Anamorphics has been my natural environment since an early beginning to my motion pictures book. I dream in anamorphics too at times.

Since 2007, my first time there, I can't avoid my mistress at least once or twice a year. One day, I'll have a 2nd house @ Alster (don't forget Hamburg is one of the most portuguese german angles).

But I must refrain myself, we shouldn't speak about the projects before they come true. :)

My best for now to you Uwe
and cheers to a few chicks in St. Pauli
(I'm just kidding LOL but I got good friends in that neighbourhood where I lived ;-)

Emanuel

PS: I'm not sure yet if I'll travel to Bremen on the first days of September. Wish my roman schedule allows it.

Haha... yeah, why not. But your next films need to be very successful - very, very, very... successful . To live in one of these sweet small houses at the waterfront of the alster, you need more dough than normal, slightly more (i suppose you know that) :-)

But i understand - you want a safe home near the american white house (consulate). It´s the heaviest guarded area in town...

Good Luck!

Just to be on topic here an ae-tutorial for an anamorphic lens flare effect:

i make them "automatically" like this, in fcp usually but it works fine in ae too:

make a copy of your clip on top of the original.
use a luma key to select the brightest parts.
optionally blur the highlights to make the flare thinner.
optionally grade the highlights blue and make them brighter as necessary.
apply a directional/wind blur until the flare becomes the desired width.
change the blend/transfer mode to add.
adjust the amount/opacity.
done.

if you like to add a normal flare around the highlights as well just add another layer and do the same, except use a regular lens or gaussian blur instead of directional. grading this one to a slightly different color, maybe magenta or green, can look very cool.

good luck.

Yep, there are several ways to get these kind of effects. Thx matt. I just obtained a little help to do a rough title sequence for my next short. http://vimeo.com/6233254
There´re also several plugins for pp, fcp, ae... to do a similar job - pretty easy + with fun. But they´re mostly not quite reasonably priced...
