New iPhone video

Anybody excited by the new iPhone video capabilities? Hard to say 100% of course, until the phones are actually in user's hands, but insofar as the specs go... anything to write home about? There have already been made successful films with the 5S ("Tangerine"), but now there is a ton more add-on lenses, stabilizers optimized for the iPhone etc., so it is becoming a serious proposition. The biggest upside is of course the small size and how relatively inconspicuous you can be, and now that there's more storage 256GB, and more video/film oriented apps, this becomes a pretty powerful tool literally in the hands of millions... are we about to see a ton of interesting indies?

Eventually shooting with a phone won't be much of a compromise imagewise, but I still don't think the quality is there. Despite the presenter at the Apple event saying "of course the video was hdr", re dr the examples looked limited to my eye, like there hasn't been much progression from 7. I'm very curious about how Red's offering will perform though.

Zeiss has add on lenses and I think BeastGrip has adapters to mount the Zeiss lenses on the BeastGrip Pro. BeastGrip also now have a preorder for their 1.33x anamorphic adapter, MoonDog Labs is not the only source now.

Otherwise the lenses used with the BeastGrip are not that stellar on my Android phone.

The big downside is that you need to run an audio recorder for anything more serious than playing around. Maybe the Core audio devices on a newer iPhone would be OK, haven't played with them, won't own an Apple product.

Filmic Pro seems to have the stuff worked out for phones:

Adding FilmicPro to my Android right now, very mixed reviews with a score of only 3 (about 50% good and 50% not so good). We'll see what it does.

Hopefully not millions of people shooting indies in portrait orientation.

Lots of crashing and won't even pull off a 24fps 1080 video on my phone. Need to check on a few other things first because I know another app will give me 1080 without problems.

In fairness, that basically holds true no matter the camera.

Adding an iRig Pro (IK Multimedia) opens up XLR mic/line input with phantom power.

Sound quality recording to an iPhone or iPad can actually be pretty darn good with a lightning interface. I've recorded to a DAW app (Auria) using a Focusrite iTrack Dock and my iPad Air and have gotten great results... sessions that I've moved to ProTools to finish. Sound qulity within Filmic Pro is good, but for a film/video production workflow I would still advocate for second system sound.

Sorry to hear that. Filmic Pro on IOS is fantastic. I've not had any issues with it crashing.

Yeah it's been a big disappointment on my LG phone, think I'm going to ask for a refund since it won't do 1080 at more than 15fps.
