Don't know where this would go so feel free to move this post.

Iomega has just came out with an update to their rev drives. they jumped from 35gb to 70gb. Storage upto 140gb compressed. I think this is a very good backup meduim for the hvx. with the 70gb discs thats 175 minutes of 720p24 footage on one disk. Faster than tape and more reliable than hardrive. Anyone know of any better backup option? $69 for disk and $599.99 for drive. Drive comes with one disk.
  • 70 GB user capacity per removable cartridge
  • Hard Disk Drive like performance
  • Data Buffering
  • Burst transfer rate up to 100 MB/sec
  • Media data transfer rates of 15 to 30 MB/sec (buffer to/from media)
  • Automatic reallocation
  • Electro-Mechanical head latch
  • Head load/unload mechanism
  • ID-less format
  • Multi-zone recording
  • Enhanced ECC
  • 12 msec average seek
  • Adaptive power save control
  • Embedded servo control
  • Logical block addressing
  • MMC-4 Multi-media command set

After all of the nightmares I experienced with Jaz and Zip drives, I would not touch an Iomega product with a 10 foot pole. They have a history of a lot of failures and weird issues that left us screwed too many times.

Guess I am dating myself but doesn't anyone else recall these disasters, especially with the Jaz?

I remember those issues.

But Mark Twain said:

"Experience shouldn't be like the cat who sat on the hot stove.

He'll never sit on a hot stove again.

But he won't sit on a cold one either."

:-)

These will not have the same issues as the early IOMega products. The failure previously was due to the heads and the disk being separate. The REV media include the heads, so they are a sealed unit. Grass Valley would use these if reliability was an issue.

Very poor price/GB, and proprietary technology. You're better off building a RAID-1 removable tray server.
It's nothing more then HDD platters in a sealed casing, i think reliability will not be that much better.

Anyone know where they sell external raid1 drives?

There are no moving parts in those sealed casings. I would imagine that would make it more reliable. It actually seems better price wise than laptop drives. 3.5 inch drives are pretty big and would tape up a lot more space than rev drives, but I guess I could back up 500gb of stuff for $200. do they sell hardrive cases like dvd cases? Something i can just take it out of external enclosure and put it in its case.
I guess the best way currently is to build some sort of external raid 1 setup that has 2 500gb drives. thats probably going to be the most cost effective. Anyone know where they sell external raid1 drives? Thanks

1. I purchased a RAID 1 setup for the my HVX a while back.

YOU DO NOT WANT RAID 1 ANYWHERE NEAR A SHOOT!!!

2. I realize that there are alot of young people here who really have no idea what the Grass Valley Group is all about or it's history. They are one of the true class acts of this industry, althought most of their products are not in the price range of people buying HVX's. Of course Iomega has certainly had plenty of problems, but the fact the GVG is using their products says something very positive. That doesn't mean Iomega products have become perfect, but they at least deserve a good look and not written off out-of-hand.

Where did you get your raid 1 setup at?
