Hello, dvx community! I'm producing and shooting a new internet tv series using the Panasonic 100A and 100B as the primary cameras! All run-n-gun and some night/dark shooting modes (slow shutter being used especially with the 100B). This new series is called "The R.I.P. Files," and the first full episode--"Ballestone-Stansbury House"--is now available for download viewing on www.ghostchannel.tv. The trailer for this episode and the second, upcoming episode, "Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House," is also available for your viewing pleasure (you can access the trailers also on my youtube.com/k3wlproductions). Please watch and let me know what you think! Since its a new series, I'm open to new interpretations, new styles, better and improved techniques, and whatnot. There will be 10 more episodes coming down the pipeline... Enjoy! Marianna LaFollette, K3WL Productions. (feel free to whip me off an email, mariannalafollette@yahoo.com).

Hello. On the homepage for ghostchannel.tv, click on "investigations" (top menu bar) and then, on the left sidebar, click on "The RIP Files." The trailers for this series can be seen on youtube.com/k3wlproductions and youtube.com/ghosthunterpat. Thanks for the inquiry for more precise viewing info. Cheers! -Marianna

That opening sequence was way too long. I almost stopped watching just because of that.

Text overlays are bulky, clumsy, unattractive.

Hand-held is too shaky at times, many of the shots are overexposed, and the two cameras don't come even close to matching.

When the investigators and the property manager first meet, they are framed down in the lower corner of the shot, which is just awkward... especially because there's nothing of interest in the rest of the frame. And on the tour, the manager is talking about marbles spinning on their own. She is asked, "So have you witnessed that yourself?" Why is the conversation cut there? We never get to hear the answer.

Lots of shotgun mic creeping into the frame.

The slow-shutter shots were distracting during the walk-and-talks (like at the end of the manager's tour, on the porch) and during the investigation (such as the bedroom EVP/K2 session).

Honestly, it's rough. Though you seem concerned on whether doc-style fits, that's not the real issue here. Doc-style is usually best for stuff like this, but in trying to paint the picture, a lot of stuff seems to have been cut out that would have helped, and some of the things left in were needless. When the investigators were taking base readings around the house, the viewer is brought into conversations at weird times. I would much rather feel like I have experienced a whole conversation even if I hadn't, than know that I've only seen a piece of it.

Also, the lav that was on Pat sounded really thin and way too crisp. What system/lav are you using? And for that matter, there seemed to be a lot of audio issues that the producer/editor felt they had to identify so as not to be misinterpreted as paranormal phenomena.

And what mode are your cameras shooting? 60i? 30p? 24p? There's a lot of motion artifacting in there, and I'm curious what you're starting with.

Thanks for your feedback, and so fast! You brought up and validated some very good issues of what I had to work with (the biggest: sound was not the best), and I've noted all of it for future episodes! fyi, to further highlight and explain what was going on with the filming and the episode: the lav equipment quality was fine, all professional sankens (I am a professional sound person in another aspect of my career), BUT it was the SKILL behind it that was lacking (my job wasnt' sound gathering for this shoot, someone else did it, a newbie. And, plus, it's different doing sound for the panasonic versus the beta/highdef cameras that I'm used to, so I'm on a learning curve with the Panasonic, on which I'm improving upon...). The lack of skill is why there were some boom shots that I couldn't get rid of, plus some audio level problems (hence, Pat's lav sounding thin--it became more important just to HEAR her, versus the quality). ergh. (during the edit, it was grating me, that there was quite a bit of post-sound work that was involved, because I do work on the premise, get it right in the production, DONT rely on resolving issues in post. But, when you have certain recorded footage, you work with what ya got...). You caught what were the "creeping-in" of visuals & audio problems, but we did havea lot of footage--a big story--to work with, so there was a bit of cutting in order to get within a framework of an hour-long episode. (fyi, a dvd version for the location will be more complete, with more clarifications and more complete answers); actually, in the future, there will be tighter story control (your comments point out this need!). btw, some of the audio and visuals is a "food-for-thought" perspective for the viewer, because not all could be answered right then and there. As the episode mentioned, research IS continuing (and, therefore, an updated episode/vignette is on the way). If anyone thinks its too long, imagine if we had posted the 2-hour version that talked about EVERYTHING! (hence, a revisit in the near future is in the works...). Also, please keep in mind, that any mic/visual issues had to be exposed so that people won't misinterpret the sound as paranormal. For example, there was creaking that investigators, viewers of the rough-episode drafts, thought were ghost voices; also, since the episode's airing, some people swear that there's a spirit mass floating in a shot and are ready to jump into the paranormal aspect; however, I looked at it and it's just a lens flare...so, yes, these types of real problems have to be explained to the viewer, to cut down on misunderstandings and the need to focus on what is truly, possibly, paranormal, versus an equipment, real-life aspect--bottom line, for the researchers, the explained has to be discussed, so that the unexplained can be focused upon. This aspect is what has been challenging in doing this type of subject matter, in a ghost/paranormal series. Anywho, is there anything you DID like? (any improvements will also entail what to KEEP, versus what to throw out/improve, eh?). The first goal of this episode, btw, was to bring up the level of this episode beyond what is currently out there with some of the other paranormal group's youtube, video-quality videos (ie.., just a bunch of handhelds of low quality with NO exterior micing at all) (and there's other issues not privy to the world--aka I am given certain parameters within I must work, so how can I get it to a good viewing level for viewers?). I hope this action--bringing up the level a tad--was done (of course, not high-end broadcast like discovery or nat geo because of the parameters given me! but...), and now, with your comments and others continually given, I will continue to improve even more (again, the style is being developed and is new for the series; I know what must be done now--and continue to get new, better ideas--so now, how to get it done?). Also, please keep in mind that some things weren't included because of other viewer feedback, such as the desire for not much detail to be given about the equipment use; in the episode, just a few comments were added in combination with the music, near the beginning. Paranormal-interested viewers are tired of full descriptions continuously being given, all the time, in every single paranormal episode out there, over and over!; they know about the equipment already, and instead, they would like a focus on the investigations itself, not a lesson all the time. Therefore, some things are done for a style reason, such as not explaining fully some things like the equipment use. fyi, there will be "mini-episodes" that WILL explain these things later. And, lastly, I'm new with the Panasonic camera so I'm learning its pros and cons, what works and what doesn't (the matching--or lack of--was the big VISUAL aspect that I've learned!!!), which is why your comments help greatly. THANK you very much for your comments and this discussion; it all really provides more information for me and my crew, the client, etc, for future episodes, because its one thing to get feedback from the paranormal viewers, but it's another to get feedback from production professionals. I look forward to more! Cheers, Marianna, K3WL Productions.

Paragraph - noun 1. a distinct portion of written or printed matter dealing with a particular idea, usually beginning with an indentation on a new line.

I can't find where the video is. I looked for a good 2 minutes, which is more than I should have spent. And about 1min and 45 seconds longer than the average person would spend. And it kept trying to connect me to a random server. Which I denied access too.

But man, internet forums, a response is only a few sentences a paragraph. It really kills your eyes.

that's strange that you can't find it. To verify the information I gave, to clarify:
