new HVXs coming in

Rumor had it that there was a budget increase in the digital department of my film school. So, I spoke with the head of my film department a few days ago concerning new equipment arrivals and whats on the list for the future film studies. I noticed that 6 HVXs are on order for december right after its release. The accessories included dozens of P2 cards and batteries so im pretty excited.

Ill be able to get my hands on the camera basically the very day it arrivals. I figure I can use one of the studios here to create a controlled environment with proper lighting/ect for much better sample footage than what we have seen lately and i will relay to this site asap for all to view. also, i should be able to answer questions to those prospective buyers since ill have easy access to the cam. Just wanted to give a heads up. looks promising.

also, i found some 2.5" HD caseings with firewire for only $8. I slapped in a 100gb drive and thought maybe these could work with the hvx instead of a firestore. 100gb have been goin for under $200. thats really good for a couple hours of HD. Plus these units dont need power adapters, you can just plug into USB port for power if you need to use it long period of time. Does the cam read an external drive like that?

The HVX needs an "intelligent" drive that knows what it is capturing, so using plain ol' drives will not work.

Which film school do you go to? Sounds like it has a great program.

darn i thought i found an answer. well at least you can still consider using those drives with dvrack since you wont have to use an outlet. Theyre so small too so you can still pocket them between scenes.

i go to scad btw (savannah college of art and design). its definitely a growing program. A dvx here is like a belly button...everybody has one. In fact theyre phasing out the dvx as the intro level camera by the end of this year and replacing them with a fleet of HVXs.

Hi,

You could transfer to these via 1394but not real time stream and record.

No.

Sorry,

Does it means that I can use the HVX firewire port to directly transfer the P2 content onto a fw Hard Drive? Cool! The downside is that youkeep the cam busy...
How fast is that transfer? I guess about as fast as the P2->hard drive device, shouldn't be the HD the slowest in the line?

Sorry,

Jan, I've been following HVX closely for a long time, and have one on order. But I don't understand why a hard drive with a fast transfer speed wouldn't work? It would surely be helpful to ownership costs, no? Either that or record to DV tape as an option. A 63 minute tape would run about 15 minutes at 100Mb speed. Not very long record time, but at least it's twice the capacity of a P2 card and about 99% less expensive.

Yes, that is what it means.
How fast is that transfer?
Depends on how fast the receiving device is. The P2 card is 80 megabytes per second, but firewire400 is 50 megabytes per second, so obviously the firewire will limit the transfer speed. But the hard drive could limit it much more -- according to a chart at Tom's Hardware Guide of external hard disks, it looks like hard disk performance varies between about 12 megabytes per second on the low end, to 40 megabytes per second for the very, very, very fastest. So obviously hard disk transfer speed is going to be the limiting factor. If you use a slow/cheap drive, you can probably expect transfers on the order of realtime (1 minute per gig). If you use an expensive super-fast drive, you can maybe get transfers in the realm of 3x faster than realtime.

DVCPRO HD is what I'm ultimately hoping for, but I thought it achieved its great 4:2:2 by running at 100 megabytes per second??

100 megaBITS, not mebaBytes. HDV is 19 or 25 megabits, DVCPRO-HD is 100 megabits.

100 megabytes per second would be 800 megabits, that would be twice the data rate of HDCAM-SR!

bit = binary digit (the smallest unit of information on a machine): 0 (off) or 1 (on)

byte = 8 (consecutive) bits (the full possible combination of 0+1)
0 1
0 0
1 0
1 1

SCAD's getting 6 HVXs???? Are you serious?

Any idea on what classes you have to have taken to check them out? I know for DVX's you need to have Lighting & Field under your belt, and I would hope the same hold true for these, as I'm finally up for that class next quarter.

Still... f***in' awesome. What's your name, man? I've no idea if I know you or not.
