New HVX coming soon?

I have heard dirty rumors of an upgraded HVX codec/format/recording system coming soon...???? can anyone verify? and if there is a system upgrade, would the current HVX's be upgradeable??
thanks

Yes. All the specs for it are in Jimmy Hoffa's grave, so as soon as the feds find Jimmy Hoffa we will all know.

First of all, no manufacturer comments on unannounced product. And anybody who knows is under NDA so won't talk. Anybody who talks doesn't know or just ventures a lucky guess.

What you may be referring to is the announcement by Sony and Panasonic of the AVCHD format based upon H.264 compression and some form of optical disc. Since that is a technology announcement, we have no idea of when it will come to market, whether it will actually come to market and even whether it is a consumer or professional medium.

Ned is absolutely correct -- if anyone did know anything, they'd be prevented from saying it.

The HVX is upgradeable to some degree by firmware, but something like an H.264 upgrade or AVC-HD upgrade would not be possible by firmware, that'd require new hardware and would be a new model.

Someday there will be an upgraded model, that seems inevitable. But I wouldn't expect it for a long, long time. Not within the next year, certainly...

I'm sure there will be some cool features in the new model (whenever it comes) but I am VERY & I mean VERY happy with the HVX and its feature set. Ok, maybe 120fps but not any time soon I think.

I would expect that sooner of later we'll see a firmware upgrade that will include the "hidden" frame rates like 2 FPS and other rates or at least that seems logical to me... Such a change would apply to every HVX.

MAYBE, Panasonic might release a new improved HVX come NAB 2007, but that's a big "MAYBE". They might add MPEG-4 support to the next version to the HVX, BUT remember this is pure guess work on my part, so don't take it as fact.

What about the famous 3 chip under $3k consumer camera with no tape deck. That would be a nice B camera to the HVX.

That might work... smaller feature set, no variable frame rates etc... Probably not too realistic until the price of P2 cards comes down though...

I wonder how much additional cost having the HVX200 tape mechanism adds to the overall cost of the cam.

Would this be hundreds of dollars, or more or less?

The DV tape drive? Definitely not hundreds. You can buy an entire cheap DV camcorder for a couple hundred bucks. I'm sure the tape drive cost is negligible and more than offset by the ability to record DV when appropriate.

This isn't exactly what you suggested, but Micron Technology, Inc. is going to be shipping an 8-megapixel image sensor in a 1/2.5-inch optical format in 2007. The image sensor is able to operate in 2MP mode at 30 FPS. For a consumer grade camera, this might be good enough. See link below:

I haven't done the math to see it this would work, but maybe using MPEG-4 AVC or VC-1, the data rate might be lowered enough to record to the fastest 2 GB and 4 GB Compact Flash Cards. I don't think this would be "professional quality", but it would be good enough for consumers.
