Does it get more 16mm'ish then this?

dv3productions.com/HD_dvx/evelyn_Andromedia_micro35_superWide-1.wmv

dvx100a reel-stream.com HD out, micro35, 24mm slr lens, approx 1:85 crop, raw recording, process in AFterEffects for the "look"

After shooting some feature film scenes for a few days on the VariCam, I am still amazed by the "Look" of this system, the VariCam is "perfect" but that is not the look I LOVE. I love organic, gritty, grainy! AKA 16mm film.....how well does this test uphold the organic, gritty, grainy style? I think it does VERY well....you?

nice rich blacks, very organic, smooth. Would like to see it on a HD monitor. Some slight vignetting on the right of the frame?

From what I see... looks great. I'm having problems with wmv though. Do you have this to share in another format. It downloads fine but playback is horrible. By the way, I am a mac user.

Yeah, Media Player for Mac is rubbish. I got Flip4Mac (http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm ), a wmv codec for quicktime and that is such a relief. Worth every cent.

The footage looks amazing btw. Hard to believe it's SD blown up. I wonder if there is a way to record the Andromeda uncompressed stream to a portable harddrive because carrying around a Powerbook isn't really perfectly practical all the time ...

You mean that there's an HD-DVX100a? Well crap, I thought that the HD cameras coming out were no more than upressed home cameras (feature and lens wise).

It looks good...But it doesn't look like 16mm or 8mm like some of you are saying. But it isn't DVX footage either. Does bypassing the DVX guts give you 720 or 1080 lines of res. What does the RAW footage look like, do you loose the DVX's gamma too. What about 24p, If your bypassing all of these functions that make the DVX - The DVX, what are you really ending up with. 60i HD??? How do you record it? I would really like to see that clip RAW with no color treatment. Did you use Magic Bullet...The brickwall has a pasty MB look.

Hello,

The device that allows uncompressed HD out of your DVX100 is called Andromeda and you can read more about it, and see raw/color corrected sample images at:

http://www.reel-stream.com
http://www.reel-stream.com/beta

The device also allows uncompressed 4:4:4 at 770x492 standard definition. It achieves HD by using the pixel shift between the CCD's to use the entire 1.1MPixel array on the DVX as a single HD sensor. This is similar to how (theoretically of course, i have no info to corroborate this) the new HVX-200 could achieve 1080 resolution with 720 CCD's. Having less pixels on each CCD results in bigger pixels, which yields more dynamic range. The pixels on the DVX sensors are bigger than on any 1/3" HD sensor.

Because the internal circuitry of the DVX is 12-bit RGB(36-bits total), Andromeda allows recording at color precisions up to 12-bits, always uncompressed.

Let me know if you have any other questions,
Juan@reel-stream.com

I've been planning for quite some time on getting a dvx. now when I get one. should I get the andromeda thing for it? is it worth it? and I plan on buying an adapter but not sure who to go with either micro35 or guerilla35. can someone help me out.

Good point. If that's the case and all the good "DVX look" stuff is being bypassed, then the andromeda presents an interesting trade-off. But I guess if you plan to do CC anyway then it would be worth it.

Too bad it's not priced at about $1500. That seems a better price point. I have an idea: How bout an Andromeda Jr. for the Panasonic 3chip palmcorders? I'm buying a gs150 today and that would be a neat mod for it. I'll be the first beta tester!

Yes, the DVX color corretion is bypassed, but in it's absence you can achieve virtually any look you want with a 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 color space. Plus the andromeda software has "looks" built into it, from what I have read, but this really does open up the camera to infinite possiblities, and, "looks" :).

It's up to you and what you are doing. If you have the $$ get the andromeda and a G35. The G35 looks better in my opinion.
