New Handheld Stable Device from Bogen!

Check out the Spotlight "What's New from Bogen Imaging" article on the front page of http://www.bogenimaging.us (can't link to it, Bogen's website is weird)

A new DV support device developed by Mike Figgis. It looks good, similar (sort of?) two hand principal as the Chrosziel "Twister" DV device. There seem to be some great ways to mount accessories and LANC / Remote control devices.

Is this what you are talking about? The *FIG RIG* ??

It looks completely uncomfortable to use and for the life of me, I can't see what the advantage would be. How would this thing stabilize motion? By what law of physics? It doesn't damp motion like a stedi-type rig and it doesn't align the center of gravity with your body like the DVRig Pro. It doesn't couple the camera to your body like an inexpensive shoulder mount. Imagine operating the camera while wrestling with this thing. Oops, I can't adjust the aperture because I'm holding this metal ring. I dub thee--worst gear of NAB.:thumbdown

Picture strapping your camera to the center of a steering wheel, with a few extra bits clamped around the outside.

Now, go out in public.

Maybe the design was found in the Howard Hughes archives. "Cameras are crawling with germs, so if I mounted it in a large ring of aircraft aluminum, I wouldn't have to actually touch the camera. How far can germs jump? Okay, make the diameter of the ring twice as large!"

Or you could roll your camera down the street and get some pretty cool footage, like the PoV of a car tire.
Is it gyroscopically ballanced or something? If not I don't see the point of this thing.

rather than holding the camera at it's center point of gravity, you get a wider base to hold it, meaning smoother shots, more stability and maybe even easier to handle.

Camera moves on rotatable counter balanced shaft

Camera moves on rotatable counter balanced shaft

From the photograph on the Bogen site, it looks like the camera is mounted on a rotatable shaft and is counter balanced. This would permit the “Fig Rig” to roll back and forth on its horizontal axis and the camera to remain stationary.
That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

April fools was like 2 weeks ago wasn't it....

I guess it *could* work. - in the same way that $14 peice of junk does(n't)...

I'm down with that $14 rig, works great. I even relpaced the mount with a monopod head and now I have a more pro looking rig, and an easier mount for it. (But now it is a $30 rig)
