GH2 New GH2 User, Old Nikon Lenses and some newbie questions

Well, figured my first post can be as newb as possible, I promise that I did search....but I want to talk, I like being helped :)

I am getting the GH2 very soon. My first DSLR. (I am an avid 35mm camera collector/user) I plan to get the voightlander adapter for my old Nikon non-ai lenses. Two questions here...

1. What will a 28mm Manual focus lens photo's and film look like on this camera as compared to a 35mm SLR camera? (i.e. 50mm is actually 70mm on a DSLR, or does this still actually occur, only hear about it) Make sense? I have a 28mm/f2.8, a 35mm/f2.8, and a 135mm/2.0.

2. I also have a Nikon 50mm 1.4 AF-S lens. Will I need to get a different adapter?

Anyways, thanks for your help and I am sure I will be coming back for more soon. Sorry if I am stupid.:Drogar-Kriz(DBG):

Nothing stupid here... and glad to have ya. on ya questions, in relation to a 35mm still camera the lenses will have a 2x crop. So the 28mm will be a 56mm and accordinly.

I think you'll be able to use the same adapter, but your AF won't work unless you get a special mount that's being developed, and in that I'm not 100 percent sure on all functionality.... The one other caveat is that people here are used to also the relationship to motion picture lenses and the whole idea of crop and other things is a very constant, and sometimes heated, albeit misunderstood issue.

You'll love the Gh2 for sure especially if you are shooting video with the camera.

I recently had the opportunity to purchase a gorgeous Zeiss 135 Sonnar. I was tickled pink to get it and the price wasn't bad either. I put it on the adapter and then on my GH1. I pointed it out the window at the house across the street. All I could get in the frame was the front doorway when I thought I was going to get the whole house !!! So I wouldn't plan on getting much use from your 135, but the others should rock !!!

Hi SJ,

Definitely not stupid questions. To take them one by one:

1. The "crop factor" of the GH2's sensor is approximately 2, so your 28mm lens will look like a 56mm lens on your old 35mm camera. Similarly, your 35mm lens will look like a 70mm - and your 135mm will look like a 270mm.

2. If your 50mm AF-S lens shares the "F mount" with your old AI lenses, it will work with the same adapter. If it is one of the newer "G mount" lenses, you will need a different adapter.

One more recommendation -- I suggest you save yourself some money and get a Rainbow Imaging or other inexpensive adapter ($26 from Amazon for the F mount adapter, $30 for the G mount), instead of paying $179 for the Voigtlander.

I came from the Nikon N70 via the D50, and enjoy using my old Nikkor and Tamron lenses with the GH2. As Chip says, with the crop factor, using a long Nikon telephoto is a little like using a telescope :-) But the GH2 is the best camera I've ever owned, bar none, and a lot of fun.

Welcome to the micro 4/3 revolution!

Bill

remember, the crop is ONLY for stills photos from the M4/3 sensor compared to a full frame STILLS sensor(m4/3 25mm=50mm FF, etc). If you compare the M4/3 sensor to 35mm academy motion film, the focal length is the same(m4/3 25mm=25mm academy).

Is that right? I may be misunderstanding you, But my 50mm 1.4f Nikon lens sure seems to be almost 100mm when I shoot video and/or stills with my GH2.
This holds true with the Kit lens as well.

What I think you misunderstood is that Svart was referencing Academy 35mm, which is a smaller format than 35mm full frame, and almost the same size as the m43 sensor. (Academy 35mm is slightly larger.)

A given lens with a specific ANGLE of view (a term which should really be used when talking about lenses, and not FIELD of view) will deliver very similar images on m43 and Academy sized sensors (when taken from the same distance).

However, you are correct. Your 50mm lens will deliver the same angle of view on the m43 (and the Academy sensor) as one delivered by a 100mm lens on a 35mm (full frame) camera when taken from the same distance to the subject. The difference though is that the characteristics of the two lenses (focal length) will produce different perspectives within the images. Think depth of field, distance compression between objects in the image, etc.

This is why people say that a 50mm is always a 50mm, regardless of format. What changes is the angle of view.

I figured as much, I just wasn't familiar with the terms of 25mm as most of the references are comparing the GH2 (m43) to 35mm. Bottom line I guess, is that its gonna double most lenses used on this system with "given" adaptor. (Along with the multipliers of DOF of any given lens)
