New G35 grabs

Also, if its like broad daylight, can you set the 35mm at 1.4 or 2.8 then let the Auto iris on the DVX handle exposure? while you worry about focus? cause it would bea pain in the ass to deal wıth two apertures. of does the 35mm stay at wıde open?

Sorry if i am asking detailed questions, but i genuinly want one of these. and i have a broken (but optically perfect) canon FD 50mm 1.4 that would be perfect for a G35.

Yes you could use 1.4 or 2.8 and let the auto iris take over on the DVX. Personally I wouldn't because you'll end up with the usual auto iris problems. You could of course adjust the iris manually on the DVX while leaving the 35mm lens alone.

The one thing that irritates me about these adapters is the inability to choose (within reason of course) any given f-stop on the 35mm lens without seeing grain. I don't always want a DOF that is a foot and a half deep. You can't go over F4 with these adapters and even F4 is really pushing it (you will see grain in other words). The G35 has a big benefit, in my mind, because it is static rather than spinning. When you stop down the 35mm lens you will see the grain but you won't get movement artifacts from the spinning ground glass.

I saw a demo of the g35 at their website where f5.6 had no appreciable static grain, which is wonderful, and while they claim that under f4 is ideal, f8 is possible in rare cases even, which is a blessing. Also, static grain can be removed in After Effects I believe much more easily than motion artifacts, but it's still a pain and yields iffy results.

The auto-iris thing is pretty cool and works great, but yeah...the shifting exposure isn't ideal, though I've seen real movies where there were adjustments to the aperture during the shot. Even without auto-iris, however, this is a blessing because it means you can shoot in very bright situations and use your dvx's iris like an ND filter to get a very shallow DOF.

Greetings,
If anyone has any questions in regards to the adapter please feel free to e-mail me anytime at jon@guerilla35.com Our website has been a bit stagnant as we are in the throws of designing and manufacturing. We are confident it will be a product that will please the most demanding of DP's. Our goal is to get a flexible affordable high quality product into the hands of our clients. Shooters like elrosten make this process easier due to their testing. We will be updating our website soon so keep checking in.

Go Ape!

That's good to hear policar! I'd definitely want to use f8. I'd certainly go higher if I could. I thought about using AE as well to remove grain. It seems to do a good job and doesn't really affect resolution.

For me it looks like a G35 would be the best bet

Quick question about the adaptor. Is the image upside down in the viewfinder, or does it have a prism to compensate?

Russell

none of the adapters that I've seen (other than the P+S Technik, ~$8k) implement a prism mechanism. The two main recommendations are to use a magnet on the side of the LCD to trick the LCD into flipping the image or using a separate LCD that allows for flipping in the monitor.

*This is perhaps one of the primary reasons the P+S alternatives can be made for less than $1000

Does placing a magnet on the side of the LCD hurt the camera in any way? How about the tape or the footage itself? Any effects from the magnet there?

Well, the strength of the magnet ultimately answers that question. Get a simple refridgerator magnet, (the really thin kind) and slice it into a fitting size, and you'll be okay.

and needless to say, regardless of the size of the magnet, you never want to place a magnet too close to your tape, though admittedly it'd have to be a REALLY strong magnet to affect the tape all the way through the camera from the LCD screen! ;-)

Everyone -

I am moving the micro35 images from this thread - it was pointed out to me (and we agree) that this is really a g35 thread, so I will respond to the micro35 points separately in this forum.

Just trying to keep everything on the up and up

Brian

Damn, damn, damn...I'd buy a Micro35 immediately if the web site let me...

Any ETA on when we'll be able to place orders again? Have you considered implementing some form of a queue system so people can be in the waiting line?
