New G35 grabs

Nice grabs, beautiful colors and composition. The third one freaked me out because it followed two of the little kid, so I thought the little kid was smoking! ;-)

Hahaha sorry to scare you Shawn. That's my friend's wife. She looks like she's eight years old! I've just been shooting random stuff since I got the adapter. It's quite fun. Can't wait to see how it performs on the HVX.

howmuch does this thing cost?????? i have Canon fd 1.4 50 mm lnse. is there a difference in price as per which lense mount you use?

X2 - Since the production version is still in development, I don't think a price has been set yet. But expect the price to be *MUCH* lower than the original Mini35. Like a 10th of the cost. But don't quote me on anything - get the real scoop at www.guerilla35.com

To further Jamison's question, is there a way to get 16:9 images with any of the following...
1. mini35
2. micro35
3. guerilla 35

DOF is really cool but DOF with 16:9 is super cool like my grandpa!

Squeeze or letterbox. I was working on an anamorphic element for 35mm adapters such as these but I have put it on hold due to monetary expenses at the moment.

Cough drop, currently, that's not happening. Theoretically you could mount some sort of home built contraption to the anamorphic lens, but the focusing stuff would be almost impossible to pull off and the rig would be huge. No one's tried for a reason, although a home-built anamorphic element might work, but quality optics are tough. You want to gain resolution, and the more glass you use, the more distortion and softness you have to deal with.

Long story short, though, shoot in squeeze mode or get an xl2. Pretty soon, everything will be high-def so it won't be an issue. Until then, squeeze mode looks pretty good!

Framing shots which are stretched in the viewfinder and flipped 180º is a nightmare, though. Trust me, I've tried it.

I certainly know what you mean about an anamorphic element being tough. I've been working on designing an attachment that would go behind the 35mm lens and I've had to run through multiple iterations so far (luckily with software first though). Still working on it.

I'm 100% certain that the anamorphic lens wouldn't work with the mini35 (etc). Anamorphic lenses are pretty much incapable of focusing, as you mention, that closely. It just physically can't be done. Also, what you would end up doing (if it did work) is capturing a wider horizontal view of the ground glass which causes problems due to the limited size of the image.

What do you mean by a true 16:9 adapter Jamison? Film isn't usually cropped to 16:9 (1.85:1 rather). There are no film lenses which will give you a 16:9 image. If you used a normal 2x 35mm anamorphic lens you would end up with a 2.66:1 aspect ration - far, far wider that 16:9.

Shaw is right on all counts. You can use "true" anamorphic lenses on mini35 style devices, but will get a 2.66:1 aspect ratio, and no one wants that.

Panasonic's adapter is 4:3 to 16:9 but it's not being combined so easily with a mini35. Century optics claims to have a super-duper anamorphic adapter in the works, but they apparently cancelled production because it would have cost as much as a dvx. It was complicated, too, and needed a seperate focus ring, and even then I doubt it would have had the macro capabilities necessary.

I don't see what's so bad about losing a little resolution anyhow. Unless you're going for a film out, it doesn't matter, and if you're going to a film out, you can afford an hvx200 when it comes out. Heck, you could afford twenty of them.

Jamison, do you live in Concord, MA or Concord, NH? If you live in MA you live like five miles from me.

ok ok ok maby i should make my self clear so let me take this opportunity to do so. Well I am interested in getting the Panasonic anamorphic lens adapter to mount on my AG-DVX100 NOT "AG-DVX100A" which has the squeeze capability and I do not. I wanted the adapter so if I ever make a film would have the capability to show it in 16:9. So I look in these forums and see the test footage on the G35 adapter and I am stunned beyond all measures. This thing is sweet and from what Im hearing, $999 doesn't sound bad. So I was wondering, is it possible to get the adapter and the G35 (when it comes out) and mount it on my AG-DVX100 thus getting the 16:9 and the BRILLIANT DOF in the G35, bypassing the option to spend thousands more on other big rig equipment. Oh and by the way I live in Concord, CA. Probably have never heard of it but its a small town by the Bay Area.

Jamison - The above replies from Policar and Shaw answer your question/concern. The mini35 adaptors would not be able to be used with any anamorphic 16x9 adaptor because the optics/glass won't allow it. So, unfortunately, you and I are in the same boat and won't be able to get true 16x9 with the mini35 adaptors. :( And those with the DVX100A can only fake it with the squeeze mode.

Quick question. if the G35 is attached, and the DVX is fixed focus on the spinning GG. lets say you throw the focus of the 35mm lense off focus then into focus, will the EVS focus edge enhancement thingie (i for got what it was called) in the view finder kick in?? like is the EVS based on image edges from the CCD or the position ofthe focusing aparatus?? cause if the EVS edge enhancer will work while the G35 is atached it will make focusing a whole lot easier. ok maybe question wasnt so quick. sorry guys.

Oh I've heard of it, I live in Pleasant Hill, LOL.

(For everyone else who doesn't get it, I live one town over of where this guy lives; small world, huh?)

The EVS detail thingy works just fine with the 35mm lenses--it's basically just a heavy sharpen filter being applied to the viewfinder. Unfortunately, in my experience with a home-built adapter, at f1.4 and f1.8, focusing is still REALLY hard and much more crucial. You'll start to miss your deep DOF if you have a lot of camera movement and figure movement.
