FS7: New FS7 little brother?

Indeed.

I think the 'I need FF' mantra came about early in DSLR shooting - actual DSLR mirror boxes getting in the way of non retrofocal glass. The speedbooster, stigma 18-35 and samyang options not yet released etc. At that point in time the mantra was good.

For canon mount designed for FF and with enough FFD to clear a flapping mirror those arguments still basically stand. For the E-mount less so. Canon bummed themselves with that mount.

The big pixels argument still stands.

Funny everyone loves the Zeiss 21mm but when I had my old Nikon 17-35, I thought it killed the Zeiss ZF so I sold it (tried 2 first). Nikon was much Sharper and better color , the Zeiss was very warm compared to the rest of the line. The Zoom did have more distortion though.
Re FF - Everyone loves it because it looks great that's all. Not for everything but it can be pretty.

With all the FF glass that is rumoured to be announced tomorrow as well... chances are pretty good that the new FS camera is going to be FF as well.

i have both of those lenses and I find the Zeiss is definitely sharper. I love the Nikon too, for flexibility with the zoom and 17mm ;-), but the Zeiss produces crisper images.

Think I've mentioned this before when we have discussed Zeiss glass, but I'm referring to the Contax Zeiss 21mm f2.8, as opposed to the ZE/ZF version.

To counterpoint the FF argument and dream a little - so the FS7 is a bit big and clunky for some RnG work - actually with sensors getting better per unit area Id be interested in an S16 zoom camera for 'one lens' shooting

I don't fully get why everyone wants a full frame video camera.

Super 35mm was great for cinema for decades and for something to take advantages of Vistavision etc you really need a bit of an epic subject, at which point you'd probably not be looking in this price range of camera anyway.

Plus you'd need all full frame fast glass and wouldn't be able to get the speedbooster umm... speed boost. You'd count yourself out of using some of the greatest movie glass ever made.

Odd.

IMHO there's something slight magical about the DOF at wide angles that FF offers, medium format-ish. And some of the better wide glass is designed for rangefinders, and you can't speedboost those. I don't see a 12mm rectilinear lens for dSLRs but i have one for the A7s which is such a look.

I know what you're saying but again, there's just something 'there' with FF, a bit like those that like anamorphic.

Hasn't sony basically declared that FF is the next frontier...?

cheers

I'm not saying it doesn't have a place, but I find it hilarious that people will bang on about Full Frame being 'cinematic' despite the S35mm being a standard in cinema, and despite them not putting anywhere near as much thought into their lighting and set design which has a much greater impact on whether something looks cinematic or not.

'Cinematic' as a term that relates to actual theatrically released movies is much more often the T3/T4 split on a Super 35mm sensor than it is f0.95 on full frame 35mm.

Tell you what, an S16 Action camera shooting Cine-EI / SLog3.cine 4k would sell like crazy..

Yeah, a smaller sensor camera, purpose built for r'n'g… perhaps a few compromises for total overall awesomeness:
  • 1" sensor
  • 4k internal
  • Log picture profile
  • at least 4:2:2
  • high bitrate... hmm.. 300Mb/s or so
  • lens with good range.. hmm.. 27,3-273mm or so that resolves the 4k image
  • either fast glass, or at least good ISO performance up to 3200
  • modern media like CFast
  • good battery life and cheap batteries... and I mean like LPE6 cheap.
  • adjustable good size handgrip... rotatable?
  • included loupe for outdoor shooting
  • really awesome IS since it's supposed to be handheld
  • maybe some photo functionality
  • accessible price... not above $2k... more like $1800
  • and hey.. why not go crazy: working auto focus!

Yeah, that would be a dream and I'm sure the market would be ALL OVER THAT, with nothing but praise for such a bold camera that went against the current trends...

I'm sorry little Canon XC-10, maybe in your next life people will get their heads out of their asses and you can be appreciated in your own time. Like so much else: it's a question of perspective.

On Twitter, Alister Chapman says "OMG... ...everyone will want one", so I'm guessing it must come with an assistant and a coffee holder at the very least...

All of whom I'm sure are waiting with baited breath for the Sony FS5 announcement.

the point is that s35 is not the only option and preference. Just because it ended up as a defacto standard doesnt nullify other gauges. I am sure the above could care less about any digital camera, as we all know they shoot film.

But I think there is a big market for a FF 4k camera amongst us mortals to sit above the A7r II and in between fs700 and below FS7. If you want to shoot S35 fine, The F5/55 FS7 are fine proven specimens. S35 is as you said a standard and most prefer it. But it doesnt negate the fact there is a market for a full-frame camcorder with 4K internal recording and proper audio. It may not be as big of a market as the Super35 one, but there are people out there like me who want to have a camera, just one , who can do it properly.

There are at least a dozen other S35 options for those who could care less for full-frame.

Btw, I do love S35, but would like to have a full-frame camera as well. my 2 cents. Cheers

I consider my RX10 II to be just that. S16 with 4K and slo mo and a decent lens.
