New FS100 Ski Video

Is that flip called a fakie backflip? I dunno what it's called but it was cool (I think you know the one im talking bout')

Whats with the banding in the sky?? I thought it was down to compression (which it may be, but it's a 300MB file, standard for a high quality H.264)

us skiers would call that a "switch" backy. fakie is a skateboard/snowboard term, but it has the same meaning, backwards.

As for the banding, with a big solid gradient sky, i see this happening alot with correction/grading/compression. Its unfortunate and unless i want to leave my shots uncorrected/ungraded (which is nearlyimpossible), its almost unavoidable. I think if i compressed it less, it wouldnt be as bad, but at this point i know its going to happen and without a 422 codec, sky banding is very hard to avoid when correcting/grading/compression. I see alot of people in the ski/snowboard industry with the same problem, just one of those things.

Ah that's why I got confused, <--- snowboarder.

Yeah fair enough, I don't tend to film the sky whilst moving the camera so I guess I don't see it much, but I have noticed it in some of the timelapses I've done, which is quite annoying, shame there is no way to work around it and still get the h.264 file for vimeo!

No offense, but it seems you guys have become way obsessed with the "perfect image" I seriously don't mind the dust spots on the sensor, and honestly really don't think it detracks from the vid one bit, it shows he gets in the thick of it, and actually uses his gear, and hardcore. For heaven sakes look at film, there's dust, spots, scratches, gate weave, ect... which is wayyy wayyy more distracting than a few little spots on the sensor. I agree if the content were crap, then yeah it would be awful to watch and very distracting.

As far as the shadows, I like them, I would much rather know and see this being shot by a working skilled camera operator, than a camera on a crane or zipline, think of the skill it must take to shoot even one shot of this. Not only do you need to know how to ski on an expert level, but operate a cam on the same. And to do both at the same time. Idk, I thought it was fantastic. I do agree on some zoomed shots. I think it would be cool to throw in some shots where maybe the skier jumps or lands into focus, and the opposite. It's obvious you and the guy doing the jumps have the skill to stay at a certain distance from one another to maintain focus. Might be worth experimenting with some shallow dof. I thought the music was a bad choice for this piece, it really doesn't motivate any emotion, and I dont mind hip hop, I would try a different music bed for this. I strill enjoyed watching it either way though.

Amazing....

Evan, are you using a vest?
If you are which brand/model?

Thanks...

Nah no vest, I just use a glidecam 4000 pro. when you're skiing, its not like running, its already decently smooth to begin with, the glidecam just takes out little bumps and movements. Since i dont hold it longer than a min or two, just my arm works :)

Thought i'd update this thread instead of making a new one, here are a couple from my season so far.
