UPDATE: 4/23/2009
Just thought I'd update this for the people who don't want to look through pages of comments.
The site now supports proper mirrored text so can be used with any setup you may have. I ask everyone to test the hell out of this app so that I can improve it. This applies even more so to those not using the Latin alphabet.
Thanks! Original post below
------------- end update --------

Ok so a few weeks ago I needed a quick cheap laptop teleprompter solution that I didn't feel like paying for and after browsing for available solutions, I didn't like anything that was out there.. so luckily i happen to also code for a living so figured i'd write my own. also figured i'd write a web-based one.

if you just wanna get to it already - check it out www.easyprompter.com

I'd really love to hear your feedback, everyone. I intend to maintain and improve it, especially if there is interest. I also intend to keep it free. If it gest super-popular or people really want to be able to save scripts, settings, etc - maybe i'll think about sort of a premium account, but the basic prompter will always be free.

I think this is at least competitive to others like it but really want feedback.

Please go and check it out. there are no ads and no accounts to sign up for. just type in your script and hit start.

I didn't know where this should be posted so figured i'd post here. if someone thinks there's a better place for it, do let me know.

tell everyone ;)

Thank you

That's a nice little app.! Thanks for sharing it. Can it be flipped horizontally somehow?

I have a lot of instances where a little netbook can run this - even if it's under or next to the lens instead of mirrored in front of it! Thanks again.

Css mirroring is limited to mostly lower case letters since it's just a unicode hack. It also only flips horizontal, which is ok if your screen is to the side of the mirror and you don't care about caps. Proper vertical flipping will require a font download.
Either way, if you guys want it I'll do it. Just help spread the word in other forums and communities

Thanks!

Very cool! I was going to gripe about it flying by too fast, and then saw the text saying there was a speed control. Of course, I kept hitting the text size by mistake, and couldn't figure out what was happening. But you did do a bang up job there.

Nice! job well done!

I liked it so much, I'm tempted to turn this into a full blown windows application with custom global shortcut keys (OS hooks), thus allowing the use of custom keyboards (much like those used on NLE's)

Would you be happy if I borrow/copy some of your ideas?

I like this idea! Great job.

I thought of doing a windows app at first but personally didnt like the idea of downloads/installs/lack of OS support, etc so that's why I went with the web route. Windows app would certainly give you more options. You can borrow ideas all you want - that's what I did - I can't say that my app is 100% original. Just a matter of putting it together differently (better?) than others. I would appreciate some sort of credit in the app. If you want to collaborate, that's cool with me too. I work in Java / .NET, etc - realy doesnt matter too much.

As far as not being able to figure out speed - yeah I gotta label the controller. If you eject the controller, then you'll see the labels for the controls.

Cool, I like the idea of collaborating, .NET is my core dev so the fact you can do .NET is even more excellent,

this could possibly be a great addition to your web teleprompter, it would allow more options for users, of course it would be free! /edit or not?

your thoughts,

Anhar

The page I linked shows it flipping caps, too.

FlipV and Flip H together should put it upside-down and mirrored. (Ummm...can both be used at the same time? Never tried it.)

I'll try it and get back to you.

Anhar - pm me with your thoughts

You can mirror text with CSS. Look about halfway down the page here http://www.tutorialspoint.com/css/css_text_effects.htm (They say "flip effect", rather than mirror...)

Looked into it - this is CSS filters which only works in Internet Explorer - that's a big no-no in my book. It's gotta work on all platforms/browsers... or at least most.
Thanks for the suggestion. The horizontal-only hack I was talking about works in pretty much all browsers so that's the one i was looking at - but it's limited.
