Hey I got a good shoot,

Here the scenario: a large 4 bay truck garage…will hold four big moving trucks. Upper right hand corner of the garage is one of the in-ground lifts. The project is to build a racecar in four more days! As of now, the racecar is only a crash cage and four wheels…no engine, no tranny, no seat, steering wheel, gas tank, or anything else. The owner of the garage and car is an expert technician, and he is spending lots of money on this baby! It’s his fifth car! He is behind schedule and everything is finally ready to go!

Here my project, I’m a one-man band, and it’s a no money gig, but boy, this one looks like fun, and a great experience to learn some stuff. I’m concentrating on the cam on this one, though I’m thinking about sound. I did a test shoot tonight [at least in my mind] but it came out quite well, as I did burn some test dvd’s.

The dvx’s on-board mic picked up good enough for the most part, we are all in tight quarters, but I did have some mumblers! The tech’s, working on this car, have a habit of leaning over the car, resting their arms on the roll cage, with their heads down, and mumble into the car. I think sometimes they are a little leery of the cam, but I suspect this will change as they get use to me, and my camera cart.

I’m thinking of breaking out the 302 and doing either some secondary sound to match in post or run a single hardwired Emw lav , from one cam channel, over the car, via the roof rafters, and back down to head level, while leaving the other channel to the dvx's on-board mic!

The car is raised on the lift and then lowered as they work on different components. I could lower the lav or raise it, as need be, even feed it through the cars chassis to get close to the action! I’m completely surrounded by steal...steal walls, and steal trucks, lots of reflection everywhere and at close proximity! I don’t think I’m good enough yet to use my oktava or 4073a on this one, and due to lack of some real open space and all the reflection and wrenches wrenching, I don’t know if its even possible? I do have a Sennheiser md421 dynamic…[if that’s valuable] but, I haven’t had time to play with it!

I’m thinking of hanging the lav, even if its in plain view at times and with its 'fast fall off', it might be my best choice for this noisy enviroment. Being a free gig, but working for pride, so to speak, I want to give a decent effort to my racing friend and his hobby, before he goes pro. My question is…is the lav a good bandaid to potential high SPL problems? I don’t think I have time to purchase any new mics

I think you should contact your local community college or film school and wrangle a boom operator. I don't think toy can do it without. The 10db pad on your oktava may work (with the sd302 limitiers) to get a loud sound. I wouldn't use it for the whole shoot if you don't have to. Please don't do this with the on cam mic!!

here another question...would my dynamic mic work, hooked to a wireless transmitter and place inside the car, for dialog? Im looking for fast mic fall off?

"fast mic fall off" is more correctly "low mic sensitivity". the way these mics get such good sound in loud environments (Im talking RE50, and some lavs here) is that they are so insensitive. You have to get these mics very close to a sound source in order for them to be effective (thats why lavs go on the chest, close to the mouth - not on a boom! Its also why RE50's and other dynamic mics are held very close to the mouth of the speaker). So you probably arent really looking for one of these mics - you are probably better off with something directional to boom OUT the background noise. In your case, i'd start with a hyper and see how that goes. If theres still too much background, you can switch to a shotgun. Ideally, you would probably want wireless lavs on all main characters, and swing a hyper or shotgun for a "fill" track and to catch interactions with non-main characters.

at the very least, put your oktava or AT on the camera, dont use the cam mic!

A couple of boundary mics might help but wiring these guys up would be the quickest/easiest solution. You can buy several G2 with EMW and turn around and sell them when you are done. Might cost you $200 to $300 after you sell them.

Cheers
