GH4 New footage

Is there anything better in the $5K and under price range?

I think this is what a lot of people are forgetting. The GH will be the best bang for the buck out there no doubt. Panasonic has made this their mission and are scoring big here. Anyone expecting this to demolish all cameras under $10k are setting up some pretty unrealistic expectations.

The rolling shutter looks decent considering its a DSLR. The GH3 was pretty good in that regards also. One of the better DSLRs.

It's just amateur web blog FUD.
How can anyone compare the RS of two cameras that haven't been released yet, one of which is an example of someone pointing a zoom at a monitor and wiggling it at NAB - with beta firmware?

Seriously all the mentioned site provides is a feeding frenzy for kids, of half baked "tests", by a very amateur shooter, who often struggles to even understand where the light should be in shots.
I've been stunned every time someone has linked to his site to reference virtually anything.
He just creates controversy for web hits, and apparently ego feeding, but he certainly doesn't add anything to the professional discussion of film making and cameras.
However he often misleads young, impressionable beginners with his self-aggrandizing zeal.

And he sure does get attention.

Can you please provide a link to your website ? I'm curious to see what you've done with the GH4 thus far.

The GH4 will be the best camera for the pure dollar performance.... but that sharpness test really shows just how good at everything the C100 really is (and it continues to get bashed on specs alone) For my money, the best under 5 thousand dollar set up before lenses (which is where my budget lies) is still the Canon. It's like the athlete that's very good at most things, but doesn't have a flashy headline "move" (raw, 4K, etc) Well, it has one...it's insanely good in low light.

Interesting that both the A7s and GH4 look very bad with rolling shutter at 4k. Bleeding edge. This stuff will all improve soon.

I for one can't wait for the GH4. The 200mbps mode looks amazing at 1080p, and I'll wade, rather than dive, into the 4k aspects of the can, learning what it does well where.

Yeah, I plan to use 1080p for hand held shots on GH4. It's not the rolling shutter that bothers me, it's the micro-jitters from slow sensors that make shots just horrible with shaky hand held. 4K would be used too - just depends on the shot and the project.

Agreed. I'm a Line Producer/Director as a day job but love shooting fun projects and interviews, profiles on the side. For me the GH4 sits at a perfect price point and feature set. I have a GH3 and Nik-M43 speed booster so its not like I have to give up the S35 look I am used to in my day to day work.

The other week I was recommending a camera package for a small budget shoot and the C100 was the best option in the sub $6K bracket with a ninja to get us DNX for fast turn around (we use Avid). Nothing else came close and the next jump is the FS700 with CD Oddyssey which is another amazing value package out there but we didn't need highspeed.

For those low budget shoots I plan on subbing in the GH4 for anything highspeed rather than renting a FS700 to keep the bottom line. On web delivery even though the 96fps looks a little soft it will be more than enough for clients. I have shot C300 @ 720/60p and its done the job despite looking soft in HD.

I really like a lot of things about the Sony A7s but I will need to see more than paid for promo videos and a final price $2500 or below to make me take interest. I do applaud Sony for what they are doing I just feel they stopped short by not including 4K internally which leads me to believe in under a year we will see same sensor in a much more capable camera. The GH4 is the safe bet on the bleeding edge and being that DSLR shooting is a side job I don't have the clients to warrant spending twice the GH4 to be on the bleeding edge of DR and ISO. Time and footage will tell. I'm fortunate I'm not in a hurry to upgrade as I've been to busy Prod/Dir a reality pilot.

Was it really shot with a GH4? A lot of aliasing + moire...

No there isn't :)
You can't watch a 4K video on 720p Vimeo and not get aliasing. Watch the youtube version at 4K (full screen) and its almost artifact free :)
But of course you need the original file to get a clean look.

Its the same with all cameras. All cameras in the world including 35mm film cameras have massive moire and aliasing if its crushed and compressed. I watched The Aviator on netflix through my apple TV a while back but had to turn it of. There where simply to much moire and aliasing from the 100% non digital and sensor less film.

Also TVs and monitors with sharpening creates massive aliasing. Try downloading Driftwoods video from the GH4 and apply some sharpening in post and then scale it down, the perfect moire free footage start dancing.
Look at all the AX100 footage on vimeo and then download it :)

Take a clip in 1080p on youtube from any camera you like and watch it in 1080p but in a small video.

A lot of moire? No really.

Some? Yes.

Those are extremely challenging views. First of, we don't know if it is v1.0 firmware, captured at what setting, and obviously downscaled on Vimeo (no 4K support there yet). Doesn't doesn't worry me too much in the absence of the original footage for download. What shots are moire free are quite beautiful.

to be fair, aerials like that make almost any camera look great. but yes, it does look like the performer everyone's hoping it to be

Thanks for your replies. I just made a comment at this video in german and asked the filmmaker. Maybe he will answer my questions...

A new test by "Hillbilly Grip Truck" between GH4, GH3, 5DIII, C100, 7D

I guessed them right and the 7D stands out bad. Its amazing how far we have come in such a short time of DSLR video (and how overdue Canon is with a 7D2). But really what I take out of this is that all of these cameras (except 7D) produce amazing video for the cost in controlled situations. No excuses.
