GH4 New footage

Saw the GH4 slowmo test by Andrew Reid. What? Quality is bad!
http://vimeo.com/91880562
96fps in a 100mbps codec... wouldn't really expect more... plus the video isn't lit very well, is completely emotionally detaching, and features a lot of shooting into strong backlight, flaring, etc which usually kills any image. Not a recipe for a loveable video. It does show that, yes, this DSLR will shoot "ok" 96fps video. Add a little proper lighting and it could serve a temporary purpose, but it's not going to replace your FS700/Epic/Phantom anytime soon.

Probably not completely. This is shooting 96fps continuous, if I'm not mistaken, and there are simple limitations to packing that much data in a given codec. The FS700, for example, has severe quality hits going from 60p to 240fps, moreso to 480fps, and 960fps is essentially unuseable (and that's even with increasingly huge buffer write times on the higher rates). Image gets softer with increasing aliasing... exactly what appears to be happening here.

I'd expect a compromise and would be more irked if it looked completely unuseable, but it doesn't... just pick subjects carefully.

I'm not certain how he reaches the conclusion that rolling shutter is better on the GH4, though... looks exactly the same to my mostly untrained eye (and also looks useable in most normal situations)

It's just amateur web blog FUD.
How can anyone compare the RS of two cameras that haven't been released yet, one of which is an example of someone pointing a zoom at a monitor and wiggling it at NAB - with beta firmware?

Seriously all the mentioned site provides is a feeding frenzy for kids, of half baked "tests", by a very amateur shooter, who often struggles to even understand where the light should be in shots.
I've been stunned every time someone has linked to his site to reference virtually anything.
He just creates controversy for web hits, and apparently ego feeding, but he certainly doesn't add anything to the professional discussion of film making and cameras.
However he often misleads young, impressionable beginners with his self-aggrandizing zeal.

And he sure does get attention.

I don't particularly see any reason to trash Andrew. I think he does a better job at creating interesting content than 90% of the other film and video blogs out there. Is he a little reaching at times? Absolutely, but I've found several of his articles helpful and you do have to give him credit for thinking out of the box. It's also important to remember there is a huge difference in an engineer/technician and an artist. I don't think he's ever claimed to be the latter.

Important to remember in what context?
What are the other credentials?
He's a blogger, period.
As such, he can write what ever he pleases and fortunately, for the folks that come to forums where accurate information gets filtered and criticized, the nonsense that he often posts gets called as such.

I don't know him, so I don't know enough to "trash" him.
I simply stated, given what I've seen him write and post, that's he's an amateur without the type of credentials that so many of the experienced pros on a forum, like this for instance, put behind there opinions.
And that they do so not for clicks but to share their experience and information to the less experienced and less informed.

I pointed out the absurdity of the recent claims of superior RS from unreleased cameras.
It really is just a bunch of nonsense and spreads said nonsense often very quickly.

And if you think he represents the upper 10% of good information regarding our craft, then I'd suggest you need to seriously broaden your reading.
With all due respect.

Is this necessary? Really? You know, the irony is all those that complain about Andrew Reid being an "attention seeker" are, in fact, the ones that have brought him the most attention.

Honestly, the constant trashing of Andrew Reid on this forum has become absolutely ridiculous. It is utterly constant - as if it's the "thing to do". There are so many threads here that I stumble into where someone, for some unconstructive illogical reason, wants to share their subjective thoughts on Andrew Reid. We've heard it all before - you don't like the guy, you don't like his site, you don't like his cinematography - ALRIGHT, WE GET IT - ALL OF YOU, WE. GET. IT. Now move on. Let it go. If you have nothing constructive to contribute in regards to the topic in said forum, then don't contribute.

Thanks, I contribute a lot of positive things to this forum.
In fact this is the first time I've ever written anything like that.
I did it because I've seen some inappropriate things written by him (ugly, vulgar things said to people who nicely disagreed with him on his blog) and just plain BS and this recent comment is just silly (making definitive statements about a camera like the A7s in beta mode.)

I'm not interested in him as a person, but opinions and links that get regularly posted with his opinions absolutely should be questioned like every thing else is here.
It's healthy, if you're interested in solid information.
I'm sure he's a fun guy to have a beer with and nice to small children.
That wasn't the point I was making.

By the way, regarding your comment on "irony", you'll notice I haven't once mention his name.
I understand how the interwebs work.

Over and out on this subject.

Why don't you take it up with him directly on his blog then?

I think you should drop the "concerned father" vibe and allow people to make up their own minds - don't assume all are ignorant novices with no concept of decision making. A lot of people simply read his blog, or Bloom's blog, and so on, to pass the time waiting for cameras to be released - to a great many of us, the majority of online review and blog sites are trivial - and always to be taken with a grain of salt. Not because of the people writing said blogs are in question, but because one should use a camera themselves before making a decision - each person likes each camera differently - filmmaking is extremely subjective. In the end, most people, sensible people anyway, go and physical either try the camera out in the shop, or rent it for a day, before dropping their hard-earned cash on new gear.

Most of the blogs out there are simply re-wording press releases and you can barely differentiate articles from site to site. Clearly there are others who provide far more useful information and who are far more experienced, but that doesn't mean there isn't a place for him.

Guys if we can stay OT that would be great.

jimagine, I can appreciate that you find rumour sites to spread little more than FUD, I personally agree, however we don't allow trash talking anyone.

Back to the discussion - GH4 - new footage. Keep sharing. I'd also appreciate (and thank you to the many that do), if you find footage could you embed the video here. Thank you!
