EVA1: New firmware

This EVA1/RAW output seems like a complete cluster...ha.

If I had an EVA1 and Inferno, I'd probably try the Angelbirds as they almost seem like proprietary media not only because most are rated the best for everything according to that chart, but Atomos seems to have some kind of relationship with them as they were "designed" for Atomos. IDK.

I hope someone can confirm everything for you.

Thanks Norbro! yeah it's a bit confusing, but, I don't mind as the functionality is cutting edge as well.

Angelbirds look great but I am hoping I can get away with Samsungs... those higher end SSDs are ballpark 2x as much. And footage will be filling up fast.

I may have missed someone answering this. I have a Gradical VF which uses the SDI camera output and I have a Small HD Focus HDMI. Trying to see if I can feed the Green Square focus assist to either unit. Seems to only work with the cameras Monitor. I see now with the update that you can feed the home screen via SDI.

You can do this on SDI. In the menu, go to Output Settings->SDI Out->Signal Select and then choose one of the LCD options (I think only the 1080i one works with the Gratical.

C'mon Mitch. Old dogs like me and you were taught to black balance at the start of every shoot day on our old ENG cameras.

That was in the old days of unstable tube cameras. Really not that necessary anymore. But it’s like chicken soup — it couldn’t hurt.

Trying to figure out EVA1 and RAW compatibility here for drive speed. Looking for some clarification.

Drive list: https://www.atomos.com/drives

So, EVA1 2k RAW @ 240fps - will the drives listed as "HD 240 video" work? It doesn't specify RAW. Or, does 240fps RAW on EVA1 require ProRes RAW?

My current understanding is the CDNG will work for all raw modes on EVA1 (4k 60p, 2k 240p, etc.) except for 5.7k 30p. My understanding is that only 5.7k modes require ProRes RAW.

Further, my understanding is that all EVA1 modes are functional in ProRes RAW, and that ProRes RAW does not require the bandwidth of CDNG - thus, pretty much any drive on that list working with ProRes Video will work if you utilize ProRes RAW on the EVA1 (including 4k 60p, 5.7k 30p, 2k 240p), and that with ProRes RAW no extra special high speed SSD would be needed. Is that right?
You need to talk to Atomos to know precisely, but ProRes RAW is 1/3 to 1/4 the size of Uncompressed RAW. It is also roughly the size of ProRes video, so for the most part should require a similar SSD speed.

A few more RAW questions on EVA1:

- Is ISO and WB adjustable after the fact? How important is it to set these correct when shooting in camera on SDI output to RAW?
- Does Base ISO 800/2500 maintain when shooting RAW? Same noise expectations, etc.?
- In standard video modes, I believe Base ISO 800/2500 becomes Base ISO 400/1250 in Mix Mode 2.2k (for HD 120-240). Is this right? Following this, in RAW, does the same thing happen in the 2K mix mode that goes up to 240p? If so, at what point?
- Can you record to internal media in the EVA1 while simultaneously outputting RAW via SDI? If so, how does it handle mismatched modes? (Ie 5.7k 24p RAW output becomes what internally? 2K 240p mix mode on SDI output becomes what internally?)

1 Set ISO & WB properly when you shoot for best results.
2 Dual Native ISO absolutely carries through to RAW.
3 2K Mix mode is different in RAW than in video, but does switch to 400/1250.
4 When outputting RAW there is no internal recording.
