EVA1: New firmware

Hi Mitch,

I'm confused, an email from Panasonic was sent out stating RAW OUTPUT: "2K | Four-Thirds frame | 1-120fps". I think the 240p figure has been confirmed from Cinema5D, yourself, and a YouTube video, but I just wanted to confirm this was in fact a typo in the email?

Yes, that must be a typo.

In the upcoming EVA 2.0 firmware, 2K120p is the top frame rate available in All-I 200Mbps 10-bit 422. Perhaps that was the confusion.

Should we start a pool? I'll guess March 31 at 12p EDT (so the East Coast bloggers have time to write about it before their moms call them upstairs to dinner).

Honestly, as long as they get it (mostly) right the first time, I'm willing to wait through early April ;) Hopefully there won't be a v2.1 to follow 10 days later... Oh wait, this is Panasonic not Adobe, so we're good.

2.0 is there!

Edit: 2.02

Question to Mitch Gross, the new firmware has FHD (1920 x 1080) All-I 100Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2 59.94I/50I and FHD (1920 x 1080) LongGOP 50Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2 59.94I/50I
Any chance Panasonic will include those in the GH5/s?

I can't speak for the GH5, as that is a product of our Consumer division. I will note that interlaced formats were originally only to be offered in older AVCHD formats, but the requests from broadcasters was so high that Panasonic decided to add the new higher quality codecs. We do try to listen to our customers.

unfortunately there are some die hard interlaced fanatics in the broadcast world especially in news maybe someone could forward the interlaced wish to the consumer division.
Essentially the GH5 and GH5s would make the perfect news tool for remote locations war zones disasters etc.

Waiting to hear reports..??
Any problems? / Smooth update process? / What cards are working with the 422Intra 400M ?
I hate to be the first if there are problems. Planning to wait on firmware upgrade until after two shoots this week and one next...

Smart move. I never update firmware in the first few days after its release, sometimes even weeks. Especially if it's equipment I use for work.

And never ever update software/firmware just before(day/night/hours) a shoot with said piece of equipment. I know a guy who thought it was a god idea to update the operating system on his laptop he used for his TelePrompTer the morning of a shoot with it. The prompter software and os were incompatible and he essentially bricked the software/prompter set-up. Needless to say, he lost the shoot.

Hi - updates running well on my EVA1,
nice to be able to access/change various FPS and ISO settings from the Home Screen, rather than the menus,

@MitchGross - for future updates - any possibility to increase data rates when using 4/3 crop&mix 2.2K/420 LongGop 50Mb at 200FPS?

Also - re: Auto Black Balance function (buried in the menus), because it exists I'm assuming its better to use this than to White Balance with a lens cap on? Can you clarify - if its the better option - any chance we could get this as an assignable option for the User Buttons?

Thanks

I may have missed someone answering this. I have a Gradical VF which uses the SDI camera output and I have a Small HD Focus HDMI. Trying to see if I can feed the Green Square focus assist to either unit. Seems to only work with the cameras Monitor. I see now with the update that you can feed the home screen via SDI.

Trying to figure out EVA1 and RAW compatibility here for drive speed. Looking for some clarification.

Drive list: https://www.atomos.com/drives

So, EVA1 2k RAW @ 240fps - will the drives listed as "HD 240 video" work? It doesn't specify RAW. Or, does 240fps RAW on EVA1 require ProRes RAW?

My current understanding is the CDNG will work for all raw modes on EVA1 (4k 60p, 2k 240p, etc.) except for 5.7k 30p. My understanding is that only 5.7k modes require ProRes RAW.

Further, my understanding is that all EVA1 modes are functional in ProRes RAW, and that ProRes RAW does not require the bandwidth of CDNG - thus, pretty much any drive on that list working with ProRes Video will work if you utilize ProRes RAW on the EVA1 (including 4k 60p, 5.7k 30p, 2k 240p), and that with ProRes RAW no extra special high speed SSD would be needed. Is that right?

A few more RAW questions on EVA1:

- Is ISO and WB adjustable after the fact? How important is it to set these correct when shooting in camera on SDI output to RAW?
- Does Base ISO 800/2500 maintain when shooting RAW? Same noise expectations, etc.?
- In standard video modes, I believe Base ISO 800/2500 becomes Base ISO 400/1250 in Mix Mode 2.2k (for HD 120-240). Is this right? Following this, in RAW, does the same thing happen in the 2K mix mode that goes up to 240p? If so, at what point?
- Can you record to internal media in the EVA1 while simultaneously outputting RAW via SDI? If so, how does it handle mismatched modes? (Ie 5.7k 24p RAW output becomes what internally? 2K 240p mix mode on SDI output becomes what internally?)

Do you not have any drives right now that you can just put in and test yourself? And some of the other things you're asking about?

(I'm sorry if that sounds a bit rough but I offer it as friendly support...you really have to test these things yourself no matter what the docs say. People have been wrong before regardless of what's published...trust I've been there and saw information get changed after users' reports/testing.)

If you don't and are simply looking for legit confirmation before you purchase anything, my bad.

No, I don't. I have an older Samsung 256gb SSD that is not rated for any of that, and SSDs are expensive. I am asking because I am going to buy drives. Otherwise, you're right, I wouldn't care ;)
