Well that was fast.

Get it while it's hot!

Here's the release notes:

1. The color of the picture in the LCD display has been improved.

2. During VFR recording, an icon which tells "No audio is recorded" has
been added in View finder and LCD display. There is no change for the
functionality of the camera.

3. Capability for handling the invisible file made by Mac has been added.
The firmware update for the items below has been made possible by using
Mac.
- Camera body of AG-AF100 series firmware update
- Lens firmware update by using AG-AF100 series

So Barry, did you notice any changes with the LCD? I wonder what this will do to the LCD's that don't have a green bias?

Well I like the little "A.REC" with a red slash thru it when you go into VFR. It'll help, but I wonder if it'll be enough for some people.

As for the LCD it seems less green, but darker for some reason. When I throw up the bars tho it seems right in the brightness. Weird.

Wait, the PDF says you have to use a card that is more than 64MB for the update file? It states in 2-2 Preperation...

"One piece of SD memory cards (more than 64MB memory card) is required."

(UPDATE: Oh wow I feel dumb. I'm so use to everything being in GB I just assumed it said 64GB... not 64MB... my bad :-) I guess that's what working 16 hours days will do to you. I even typed "MB" and I thinking "GB" the whole time. )

I don't believe that there are any LCD's that don't have the green bias. I just think it's such a minor issue that there are many folks who simply don't notice it. I know for a fact that nobody at IBC saw or complained about it, and nobody on the entire "A Verse Before Dying" crew ever saw or complained about it. Yet that unit definitely had it. It's one of those things that if you test for it, if you push for it, you can see it. Whereas if you're simply just using the camera, you'd pretty much never notice it.

It was there on the pre-pro units we were using, and it's now there on my own personal camcorder. Still, it never bothered me for a second. However, if you moved from the EVF to the LCD and back to the EVF, you could tell that there was a tiny hint of green in the LCD, and that the EVF was more accurate.

Well, I should rephrase that -- it WAS there on my own AF100. Not anymore -- not after installing this update. Whites are definitely whiter now, without the barely-noticeable tinge of green that used to be there.

I still don't think it's going to end up being a reference-caliber monitor and I still wouldn't trust this (or any) on-camera LCD to be delivering perfect color reproduction, but it does seem to be improved in color reproduction versus prior to the update.

Really?

I would say that if the pdf called it out, that when the file unzips the file is fairly large. I mean it isn't saying a 64GB card, it is saying a 64MB card. I don't even have one this small. Is it really an issue?

I notice, after the upgrade, that the LCD looks different with less green tint. It still looks richer than the EVF but I won't notice that in B&W later anyway! I'm glad that this process of upgrades to the firmware is in place and I am very pleased with the results so far.

I hope they fix the green bias issue for the GH2s as well. I doubt they will be as quick to issue new firmware for that camera though.

Slipped the SD card loaded with the firmware uprade into my camera and got the warning to use the AC adapter. Of course, I seem to have lost that part somewhere. I've got plenty of fully charged batts but I guess I'm SOL.

On Mac - Downloaded the firmware and the mac patch. Formatted card in camera, popped it on the mac, copy firmware file and paste to card (firmware is in a file called private which was already on the card, overwrite YES), dragged Mac patch onto card, ran it, pop up said "finished". Eject, card into camera, plug in ac adapter, camera on, Cam Menu>Other functions> Update - Yes. Wait.... Finished. Bingo. Worked like a charm.

Should I copy the vsi5257j.zip file to the root of the SD card?...or the unzipped folder named vsi5257j ?...or ONLY the vsi5257j.img file deep into the PRIVATE folder?? Not evident from the user manual..

SOLVED ! solution is : replace the PRIVATE folder on formatted SD card with the one within the unzipped folder.

I'm on a mac and did the exact same thing that Noel did and keep getting CHECK CARD... Either I'm a moron or the cameras don't like me.
