NEW Firmware Ver. 1.4 for 14-140mm Kit Lens

Thanks, Mojo. Somehow I missed that one.

But still: call me overly cautious or downright paranoid -- a new firmware update only 8 weeks after the last one?

Has anyone tried to "rehack" a GH-13 (new bin file with changed settings) after applying the 1.4 lens update?

New firmware version 1.4 for 14-140 lens. Warning..

It is supposed to improve autofocus and image stabilization:

Have any GH-1 users tried it?

Is anyone brave enough to test if it will make the GH-13 unhackable?

Thanks for any input.

Yes i loaded the firmware onto my unhacked body firmware v 1.2. the lens is now 1.4 and is now so sloooooooooooooooow to focus stay clear of this one.

not my experience...just updated a few minutes ago and tested immediately. certainly not slower on my cam, but doesn't seem faster either. Whatever, Panasonic, thanks anyway. LOL

i'm gonna shoot some video in a bit at home with my daughter to test the OIS. Hopefully that'll be a more noticable improvement.

Thanks for your answers, everybody.

Now, a lens that is in dire need of a firmware update is the pancake -- auto focus is way below par in my opinion. And Chris, I think we'd all be interested in your take on any OIS improvement...

Maybe this is to help get the lens to work a bit better with GH2? Seems the patch notes have changed on old version....1.3 used to say improved OIS I believe and now it doesn't.

They made it slow because of the noise.

i may or may not be the first to report on any OIS today, but i'll gather some footage after i'm done home-schooling my kid...maybe do a test as well, emory, and see what you think as well?

Okay, thanks, Chris. We'll be looking forward to your report.

For what it's worth: I found focus speed did improve with 1.3 over 1.2. I never found focusing noisy on the kit lens. To be honest, I can't even hear it, and the microphones don't pick it up either. But as for the pancake....

By the way, does anyone know if it's possible to revert to a previous firmware version (say, from 1.4 back to 1.3 -- if autofocus proves to be too slow)?

Have you gotten around to doing a test, Chris? Is the OIS appreciably better?

I keep reading that version 1.4 makes autofocusing louder. Has this been your experience too?

Thanks for your input.

I tested out the OIS this weekend, and if anything OIS during video recording is worse, if anything.

But for video recording, the same people that use OIS are the same people that probably use AF-C...so your footage is probably going to be crap anyways.

AF-C doesn't work on the GH1 just like it doesn't work on all video cameras. It's just worse on the GH1 because the shallower DOF makes it way more noticeable. On 1/3" cameras, you could get away with lots of out-of-focus shots...especially in standard def.

After the firmware update on the 14-140, WHILE video recording, I can now lock focus with a half-press of the shutter release with the focus knob in AF-C mode. This is how some of the Lumix lenses funtion, like the 20mm for example, and is a HUGE improvement IMHO. This way, you can lock focus in AF-C, and switch to MF without taking your finger off the release. Before with the 14-140, you had to switch it to AF-S, half-press to lock focus, then switch to MF...which required you to go past the AF-C setting on the dial...at which time the camera would loose its focus lock. (This is helpful when you shoot weddings for example, and for syncing purposes, may not want to stop recording to re-frame/re-focus your shot.)

It's still not true AF-S, but it's a huge improvement on the 14-140.

Really... I didn't know that you could do this. Is this only for the GH2 or for the GH1 as well? Oh I see... you still have to switch the knob to MF, but now you can start on AF-C???

I'm using the GH1. I couldn't do it before the firmware update. Someone said you could use true AF-S for video recording on the GH2, but I'll believe it when I see it myself. ;)

I am doing a complete "How to configure your GH2" video tonight. How to use AFS/AFC during video is in there. This video should answer the questions you have. The short answer is yes you can do AFS/AFC/MF with Face, Single, and Area point focusing during movies, while taking pictures, and for pre-focusing with the GH2. Apparently the GH1 could not do true AFS before the 14-140mm update because it lacked the "Continuous Auto Focus ON/OFF" option in its movie menu. This meant that the GH1 always used AFC for video unless you had an MF lens attached.

My GF1 has the menu option so I have been using AFS for video with it for the past year. I didn't use AFC with the GF1 because it was too slow with the 20mm. Now with the GH2 I set it on full AFC face detection and just forget about it unless I am in really low light. Then I just use the touch screen to do AFS.

The GH2 is a revolution in Auto Focusing. I have never seen a camcorder do what it can do. However, it took me 2 weeks to figure out how to use it properly.
