GH5 new firmware : GH5 GH5S G9 on MAY 30

Oh no. That will necessitate a lot of work on my end. I was afraid of this possibility coming to pass.

Then again, unified color if true! I'm going to test on my end (thousands of color samples) to confirm whether or not this is so. (before and after)

And I was just starting to relax.

That would be crazy indeed.
Why would they do that? (Well V-log L looks different on each camera...)

I wish I made a test before I updated.

Did you try the 6K anamorphic mode (needs less blur in post because it doesn't oversharpen, and nice cropping flexibility). It has some other colorscience as well. Way more magenta - regardless of the decoder I use for the H265 footage.

There are rumors that the color science of the GH5 has been updated to GH5s variables. I wonder if that's true.

I guess it is possible but I think Panasonic would let people know that the color from your camera would be different after the update. Kind of a big thing to real video shooters.

BTW, I think we need a new term for this idea of wanting something to be or come true and thinking starting a rumor might make it true. Like a Wantor...

I see no evidence of this, and it is HIGHLY unlikely that Panasonic would do so without documenting it. Why do people keep looking for surprise bonus updates that Panasonic did not include in the release notes. They note what was released. ;-)

I haven't yet; that will necessitate a PRE (I'll add it to the list hehe)

For best GHa fidelity, H.264 is the way to go atm

That would be wonderful! Haha

I did some small tests before and after I uploaded the new firmware to see if there was any difference.

V-Log-L is the same both for ISO 400 and ISO 800 - ISO 800 400 works better in both versions.
HLG ISO 400 is the same but interestingly the ISO 800 seem to have been worse in the prior version, the colors were off in the pre-update version. ISO 800 400 is definitely better.

It would be interesting if a few people before they upgrade could test HLG ISO 800 pre and post and report their findings as well.

Recordings were done externally using DNxHR HQX

Edited to add, ISO 800 in red should be ISO 400.

Why aren't you all complaining about the horrible aliasing in VFR!!??! I am coming from GH4 which had acceptable quality loss at 96 fps. Bought GH5s and extremely annoyed of the aliasing in anything above like 100fps. Dancing textures man... shoot a rock, dancing aliasing texture ;d, whatever you shoot with a little bit more detail it starts to look horrible : / . For comparison GH5 180fps is better. I know guys that changed their GH5 cameras with GH5s and they want to go back now to GH5 cause of this aliasing.

Perhaps I am not remembering correctly...
The new firmware release has Luminance Level set to 64-940 in anamorphic HLG mode.
This cannot be changed.
Was this the same in the previous release? Not 0 - 1023 ?
Is this changed?

The question is why would you want to change this?
Standard LUTs and color space transform rely on correct values, which in the case of HLG is a combination of a gamma and log curve.

Unless you record in V-log, which is defined as data levels, I would strongly recommend not to tinker with levels.

I just don't want my current workflow to become upset by any change.

Oh, and this is in 6k anamorphic HLG mode, BTW...

I have 2 issues after the firmware update on GH5s, exposure compensation is settable but it doesn't always change the actual compensation without a reboot/retry. And then I notice a sometimes out of synch audio condition. Focus is working great. I used both cams GH5/GH5s on a wedding shoot. I was surprised how different the color was with V-LogL using the default settings on both. I was disappointed at first with the GH5, the GH5s seemed to have more pop, but the GH5 was able to match the look with some post adjustments, skin tones were awesome with both cams. The reception venue was very dark, the GH5s never lacked with the PanLeica 42.5mm F1.2 Nocticron. The GH5s is very sensitive to vibrations on the monopod. The GH5 was buttery smooth with or without the gimbal.

You missed me bitching about it in an earlier post!
