New FCP due in spring

Sorry to dredge up an old comment, but:

Here's a real stupid idea: why not at least have a simple keystroke to do a cut with?

CTRL+v will razor-blade the selected tracks (or all) at the playhead. I use it regularly to chop up interviews while they're playing back.

More generally, the keyboard layout window within FCP is your friend. You can search for commands you think ought to be on the keyboard, and find out that they either already are, or can be mapped to whatever combination you like. My personal favourites are 'v' (select nearest edit), 'u' (change edit-point selection incoming->outgoing->both), '[/]' (ripple/roll edit selection) and '\' (play around playhead). In-timeline trimming and preview without leaving the keyboard, lovely. Oh, and / and ' for moving to the previous/next edit point.

Apple seams to really be sticking there neck out taking over the show. something tells me they intend to deliver.

The fact that it was in development at the same time as Lion might be a good thing. Apple people stay apple people because of how easily everything works together (I'm speaking here about the other aspects of the OS and General UI) perhaps we will see that same sort of integration in Final Cut and bring all the parts of Studio under one roof.

One thing you got to give Apple props for is the absolute silence on the part of the people who are in the know. I know they are good at keeping secrets but seriously the US Government could learn a thing or two and they would have to worry about things like wikileaks.

It's funny because the most info we get about the new Final Cut is from Jobs himself saying "it will be awesome" granted it would have been more funny had he called it "Magical" and he is given to hyperbole but still.

iStudio? Meh.

Unless they're going to beef up iMovie and get rid of FCE. To be honest, FCE has outlived its usefulness. Especially now that iMovie can work with 24p, the added benefits of FCE aren't enough to overcome its limited codecs (AIC is the only option for working with HD) and limited frame rates.

I'm meeting with some fellow ACT's just before the SuperMeet, we're all very anxious.

During the SuperMeet show at 7pm (Vegas time), if I have good enough WiFi or 3G, I'll be blogging from the SupeMeet live via my iPad.

I've already been told my Mr. Horton that cameras and recording devices will be strictly prohibited. You only "look like" you're shooting footage/photos with your iPhone, you could get booted.

But, I can text all I want! http://slfcpug.ning.com/

A lot of speculation about things no-one knows about, until Tuesday.

OK, I'm off to NAB, seminars to teach, seminars to attend, vendors to meet with, friends to hand out with, parties to crash, and a SUPERMEET to freak out over. LOL!

No problem. Wish I was going, but work comes first.

This will be the first NAB in 4 years where I haven't taught for Post Production World as well.

Everyone enjoy!

Well, if the guy from AlphaDogs is right, expect iStudio 10:

after watching these videos i could help but think, I wonder if this is the same type of naysaying that went on just as the NLE starting to take over from linear editing. it seems like one panelist who hadn't seen FCP had a axe to grind and is totally against change. probably because like those who were amazing at linear editing mostly likely were quite comfortable with their way of editing was all they needed to know and didn't want to learn the new fangled way of Non Linear editing. i for one am excited for change and i'm sure those of us who make our living in video won't be let done. it may not be what were good at we may have to learn something new, but thats what this industry is all about

My 2 Cents

...seems like one panelist who hadn't seen FCP had a axe to grind and is totally against change...

I'm not sure exactly which of the panelists you refer to (several are AVID supports, it's true) -- but I can see it from their perspective: they've been editing before the age of the computers. They saw FCP come out 10 years ago and probably heard similar grand ambitions from Apple back then too. Now ... 10 years later and FCP has hardly made a dent on their "top of the line" market, they see this more as a repetition of history.

Don't get me wrong: I'm actually a FCP guy myself, although I am admittedly a little skeptical about this one... something just doesn't sit right with this release as it's been handled.

That guy runs one of the largest post houses in LA and has been around the industry and seen the trends. I can't discount anything he says.
Guess we will find out on Tues.

If the new FCP is actually revolutionary and meets my needs in format support and stability, then I may completely switch platforms. However, given that Apple's focus has been very consumer-driven these last few years, that remains to be seen whether or not Final Cut Pro will move forward or take two steps back and become "iMovie Pro"
