New DVX100B mic problems

Hi, I just got a brand new dvx100b and i took it out to film today using the onboard mic, and when i captured it it didnt sound too good. the audio of people talking that were right infront of the mic sounded pretty good, but the background noise of cars and loud thumps from construction sounded horrible, all static like.

Is there some settings that i might have put too high or something before i started recording?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steven bogda

I am currently like 3500 dollars in debt, so I got to make use of the onboard mic for just messing around shooting.

But I did adjust the levels, thanks. For some reason I get confused when I am reading the manual.

Thanks,

Hey i understand the whole debt issue, because i just got my DVX 2 weeks ago and i am hurting finanically. Well, i will also test my camera out so hopefully i can give you some input. But, may i ask for more specfics about the sounds. Were, they garbled, or extremly high pitched, or did they only come from behind the mic... you know these sorts of things.

it sounds like there is wind coming out of their mouths instead of voices. and if anyhting makes a loud boom or anything liek a door closing it doesnt even sound like anything otherr than a ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhccccccccccccccccccccc

Sounds like your levels drove the Mic pre into clipping.

Just like lenses don't see light like a human eye, mics (and their attendant circuits) don't "hear" like human ears. Our ears are far more tolerant of radical swings in volume than any mic is.

Serious folks who want good sound always use an external mike and at least some sort of limiter or compressor to avoid wild fluctuations and clipping.

If you're just messing around, you can expect more of the same with very loud back ground sounds.

I have not noticed any problems with mine. I was shooting the other day and got to school to late to rent a mic and was forced to use the onboard mic. (luckily i was only shooting b roll that day anyways) I did do some impromptu interviews in the field just for kicks, the mic picked up all background noises fine. Including a robin that was pretty much overpowering the speaker directly in front of me.

i know the onboard mic isnt great, but it should at least work, im just assuming there is a problem with mine right out of the box. the levels are really low and it still sounds like they are way past the red.

thanks anyways.
