We're working on a new feature documentary... We just got the website up... SP Live
You can watch the first ten minutes of the film...
Comments welcome!
Huh, interesting. I've tried to take on projects like that in the past but ended up getting too involved thinking about the specifics of what's going on. For instance, isn't that a curious paradox you've introduced in the last 30 seconds or so of "the first ten minutes"?
Anyway, I actually did watch the whole thing. The weakest part, by far, is the overly slow introduction, self-deprecating talking head. Other than that it rolls along fairly well and I do enjoy the honesty with which you're treating it.
Not quite. I watch the beggining of it. I think i would be in the "uninteresting" group. Look a bit déja vu too me and a bit "easy" to be original. I liked the fact that you re honest about it though. I guess the whole thing would come up better,...but for now i haven t willing to finish the first 10 minutes. That's just my honest opinion...you guy work well though that obvious.
Okay I just saw it for a second time and to be quite honest I didn't get it.
It seems like you are doing something along the lines of American Movie or Lost in La Mancha, but branching off to something else?
Your section where you define the concept is unclear.
As for the clip itself it would be easier If I understood who your target audience was and how you hoped to distribute it, say public television or straight to dvd.
I would have to say that there was a lot of rambling in the narration which led to the incoherent nature of it all, but it appears to be intentional for comedic reasons.
I can't imagine this doc. being feature length. There is no coherent direction and really no story that the audience can understand, IMHO.
Personally I didn't enjoy the re-enactments.
Is there a documentary you are modeling yours after? This might help me understand what you are doing.
In the end, I don't get whether you are doing a documentary of the making of feature film that you (or the main guy/narrator) is acting in or something else. There is an attempt to explain, but I'm afraid I just didn't get it.
As for the style, it looks like something I've kinda seen on tv. I'm thinking history or discovery channel where they explain the work and life of say Albert Einstein to a very young audience, and so they over act and do a little of slapstick comedy keep their attention.
Fil's comment about the uhm's is a good point. It looks like you were rehearsing in front of the camera, rather than this being a final take.
I am a huge doc fan, I own over 50 docs and have just directed my first feature doc and signed up for another... THIS, I dont get. It is a little too clever for me. It does not feel honest and genuine as others seem to think. It is the style of 20 Dates, a style which I do not like. So you have to make a movie to save the company but it only has to make $5000? How can that save the company?
To me a documentary should be made about an event or happening that would be going on if the cameras were not there. It is like the Apprentice, Trump is making TV, not looking for an employee. You guys are making a movie, not documenting a story. I think it is fine to go the Michael Moore way of basically making a documentary style editorial but this is neither. There are occasionally docs that stray from classic techniques that are interesting (Yes Men for instance) but I cannot begin to imagine a decent 90 minutes version of your opening 10.
All that being said... the best docs are the ones that end up completely different than what they intended. Capturing the Friedmans started as a doc short about birthday clowns. Start-up.com was meant to be the triumphant exploitation of the internet boom. Just keep filming, you never know what might happen.
I rewatched it... i don t know what to tell ya. Like the previous post said,... i can hardly see 90 or 60 minutes of .."this"... And, honestly, i'm(normally at least) really really open in term of what i see. Yes, it s now more 'clear' what you intend to do,... but i can t think about somebody interest to look at it. You might want to ask yourself why you really decided to do that,...if it s just to "supposedly save the company"...it's seem definitely not enough to me, to get the people to watch it.
And, the uh...umm...of the guy are just annoying, i would cut that. And yes,...continue to film, i agree with the last post, the bes doc are always the one that end totally differently than what they were supposed to.
Why don t you try to do fundraising in the film(my friend said) ?...isn t it the purpose of the company ? Show your understanding and your experience of what you are proposing to the kids ?
I just saw this thread and watched the "first ten minutes".
i like it.
It gets me hyped im rooting for the guys. instead of looking at structure and where it's headed im really just relaxed at what im watching and letting it lead me through
what is the first project? its someone holding the camera infront of a TV recording itself. in a sense really. which im liking.
i dunno its not blockbuster its not hollywood but you know that too we all know that.
have fun making this project man Im all for it and i support you guys and your team.
Glad you liked it... PM me, I'll see if I can get our 58 locked minutes online... Also, here is a link to our recently created blog. It will document our progress on this film. http://splive.blogspot.com/
